Work Text:
Lucy watches as the load Tim into the ambulance, her heart is in her stomach and she feels sick as it drives away. He was barely able to talk, let alone breathe. She feels someone pull her away and then she’s being put in her own ambulance.
“Sergeant Chen.” Lucy looks up to see the paramedic looking at her. “Do you know where you are?”
“Yes.” She says. “Can I call Sergeant Bradford? He—”
“You will see him when you get to the hospital.” The paramedic says. “Now lay down.” Lucy sighs and does as she’s told.
“You got Sergeant Bradford out of there?” The paramedic asks. “Impressive.”
“It was nothing.” Lucy says. There was no way she was leaving Tim or anyone really behind but getting Tim to safety was a priority. “I wasn’t gonna leave him behind.”
“Of course.” The paramedic says. “This is pretty crazy.” Lucy nods and shuts her eyes, she has no idea why this happened or who did it. She has no idea what happened between the explosion and waking up.
But god—
It was a close one and once again she found herself fighting the fire with Tim and this time getting him to safety.
“Can you make sure Sergeant Bradford and I are in the same room?” Lucy asks. She already knows Tim is probably driving the paramedic crazy. “Please.”
“I will do my best.” The paramedic reassures her. “Now take a deep breath Sergeant Chen. Your heart rate is up.”
Lucy takes a few deep breaths but she doesn’t know if it helps. She just wants to get to Tim.

“Sir.” The nurse says looking at Tim with a stern expression.”you can’t just get up like that.”
“I’ve been through worse.” Tim grumbles waving her off. And maybe everything is sore and he has glass in his arm and his face is cut up but—
Lucy is not here.
“Sir—”
“Sergeant Chen.” Tim says because it was the only thing on his mind. “She—”
“Is right here.” A voice says. Tim turns slowly because everything hurts and sees Lucy already in a hospital gown. “I had to be examined first.” Tim takes a step towards her and then pulls her into his arms.
“I’m okay Tim.” She mutters looking up at him. “How are you?” He pulls back and looks at her. His chest is tight, and he feels like something is holding on to him.
“I’m fine.” He says softly. “I’m—”
“Sergeant Bradford. Sergeant Chen.” They both turn to see two nurses coming into the room. Tim doesn’t let go of Lucy. “We need to get this glass out of you—Sergeant Bradford if you want to follow—”
“No!” Tim says. “I’m fine here.” The nurse looks at Lucy and she puts a hand on Tim’s back. She rubs it up and down in a soothing motion that has him relaxing a little.
“Can you—can we be in the same room please.” Lucy asks. “It’s been a traumatizing day.” The nurse looks at both of them and then nods.
“Of course.” She says. “Just get up on the bed.” Lucy gives Tim a look and the both hop up on the bed without another word.
It was better this way, Tim’s not sure he would be okay if she wasn’t right next to him. He needs her like he needs air to breathe.
“You both are lucky.” The nurse says who is at Tim’s side. “We have seen a lot worse injuries.”
“Sergeant Chen saved me.” Tim says and his voice sounds a little hoarse. “It was a crazy situation.”
“I’ll say.” Lucy’s nurse says. “So you two come as a pair and it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to separate you.”
“Correct.” Tim says. The nurses exchange a look and Lucy looks at Tim and shakes her head. Tim takes a deep breath, his chest still hurting a little. It feels like the desk is still on top of him.
This might be a long night.

“What’s going on?” Lucy asks when she steps back into Tim’s room. He’s still in his gown and the nurse is looking at his IV and vitals. “Why aren’t you changed?”
“We are concerned about Sergeant Bradford’s breathing.” The nurse says. “We would like to keep him over night.”
“I’m fine.” Tim says but he starts coughing and Lucy knows he’s not going to argue anymore. She rushes over and helps him back into bed.
“Sounds good.” Lucy says. Tim sighs but lays down on the bed and puts his arm over his eyes.
“It’s just overnight Sergeant.” The nurse says. “I’m sure everything will be okay.” Lucy thanks her and as soon as she’s gone she grabs Tim’s hand.
“You can go home.” Tim says although his voice wavers a bit. “You don’t have to stay.” Lucy scoffs at him and nudges him over and climbs into bed with him.
“I’m not leaving you.” She says firmly and she’s not sure if it’s because she doesn’t want to let him go or she doesn’t want him to be alone especially after something so traumatic happened. Tim wraps his arm around her and she lays her head on his chest.
It’s almost like they are in bed at home and it’s comforting to hear Tim’s heartbeat. It’s comforting to know he was holding her close.
“Good.” Tim says and presses a kiss to the top of her head. “I don’t really want to let you go.”
“I’m not going anywhere.” She promises. “Let’s just get some rest.” Tim hums softly and buries his face into her hair.
“I’m glad you are here.” He says. “I love you.” Lucy sighs softly and lets Tim’s heartbeat slowly guide her to sleep. She’s not sure what the aftermath of the explosion is going to hold. She’s almost lost Tim. Again.
She is sure there’s going to be a lot of ups and downs but they would figure it out. For now this is exactly where she needs to be. With Tim—safe and warm in his arms. She takes another deep breath and lets out the words she knows he wants to hear.
“I love you too.”
