Work Text:
Sasaki and Miyano
The announcement came over the loudspeakers just as the last streaks of daylight disappeared.
“Attention students: the school cultural festival will begin at 7 PM tonight. Food stalls, games, and evening events will be held in the courtyard. Please prepare accordingly.”
Miyano blinked, adjusting his bag strap. “…7 PM? That’s… really soon.”
Sasaki, standing just beside him, grinned. “Dark already. Perfect for sneaking around.”
Miyano felt his cheeks warm. “S-sneaking around?”
Before he could protest, their friends—Hasegawa, Ono, and a few others—joined them, chattering excitedly. “We’re going too!” Hasegawa said, tugging Miyano along. “Don’t think you can get away with going alone!”
Miyano glanced at Sasaki, who shrugged casually, leaning slightly toward him. “We wouldn’t want to disappoint our friends, would we?”
“…I suppose not,” Miyano muttered, trying not to sound flustered.
The courtyard was already lit with lanterns casting a soft glow over the stalls. The scent of grilled food and sweet treats drifted in the air, mixing with laughter and music.
As they walked past the first food stall, Sasaki reached out subtly, nudging Miyano with his elbow. “Cotton candy?” he asked, already grabbing a pink puff for himself.
Miyano’s hand brushed against his as he accepted one for himself. He didn’t pull away; it felt… natural.
Their friends, oblivious at first, started noticing small things: the way Miyano looked at Sasaki when he teased, the tiny smirk Sasaki had when Miyano blushed.
“You two are acting weird,” Ono whispered, nudging Hasegawa.
Hasegawa grinned knowingly. “…Definitely hiding something.”
Sasaki leaned closer, voice low but teasing. “Careful, Miyano. Don’t eat too fast, or I’ll steal yours.”
Miyano barely glanced at him, cheeks pink, and continued talking with their friends, casually holding his cotton candy in one hand while stealing a small bite from Sasaki’s puff. “…You’re impossible.”
Dusk had settled fully now, lanterns flickering in the night, music playing softly in the background. And as they walked through the festival, laughing and teasing, it was obvious to anyone paying attention that… well, something very special was going on between them.
And their friends, slowly piecing it together, couldn’t help but grin.
The courtyard was alive with laughter, music, and the warm glow of lanterns. Stalls lined every path, offering everything from grilled corn to colorful souvenirs.
Sasaki and Miyano wandered between them with their friends, sharing snacks and teasing each other. Miyano’s hand brushed against Sasaki’s as he handed him a drink from a stall, and Sasaki caught it with a playful grin.
“You know,” Sasaki said softly, leaning just slightly toward Miyano, “you’re a lot more fun at night.”
Miyano’s cheeks flushed. “…I’m not… I mean—” He coughed, distracted by the smell of fried takoyaki, and took a bite. Sasaki smirked, quietly stealing a piece before Miyano could react.
“Hey!” Miyano whispered, though his tone was half amused. He didn’t pull away.
Their friends noticed the small, quiet interactions—the stolen bites, the gentle nudges, the way Miyano’s eyes followed Sasaki without realizing it.
“You two are so obvious,” Hasegawa muttered, nudging Ono. “I don’t know how you can’t see it.”
As the night deepened, a hush fell over the courtyard. The festival’s fireworks show was about to begin.
Sasaki guided Miyano to a quieter spot, standing just close enough for their shoulders to nearly touch. The first firework exploded overhead, a burst of red and gold, reflecting in Miyano’s wide, bright eyes.
“…It’s beautiful,” Miyano whispered, voice soft.
Sasaki glanced at him, catching the flicker of awe in his gaze. “Not as beautiful as you,” he murmured, teasing but gentle.
Miyano’s blush deepened, but he smiled, eyes focused on the sky. He didn’t move away when Sasaki nudged him lightly with his shoulder. Their friends watched from a few steps back, whispering and giggling as they realized just how close the two had become.
The fireworks continued, cascading in the night sky, and for a moment, time felt quiet between them. Just two people sharing a secret closeness amidst the colors, the laughter, and the night.
When the last firework faded, Miyano laughed softly, shaking his head. “You’re ridiculous,” he said.
“And yet,” Sasaki said, grinning, “you love it.”
Miyano’s smile widened, and for the first time, even their friends couldn’t deny what was obvious.
The night sky exploded in bursts of red, gold, and blue. Lanterns flickered softly below, and the distant laughter of friends mixed with the crackle of fireworks.
Miyano stood beside Sasaki, shoulders nearly touching, his eyes wide as the colors reflected in them. “…It’s beautiful,” he whispered.
Sasaki tilted his head, a teasing grin on his lips, leaning just slightly closer. “Not as beautiful as you,” he murmured.
Miyano’s cheeks flushed, and before he could protest, Sasaki’s hand brushed gently against his, fingers intertwining naturally. Their eyes met, shy and sparkling, hearts beating in sync.
The next firework burst overhead—bright, perfect, and loud. Without thinking, without words, they leaned toward each other.
Their lips met, soft and fleeting at first, and the world seemed to fade around them: the laughter, the lanterns, even the fireworks themselves became just a backdrop to this small, perfect moment.
When they pulled apart, Miyano’s face was pink, his eyes shining. Sasaki smirked, still holding his hand.
“You’re blushing,” he teased.
“…You’re ridiculous,” Miyano whispered, but his smile said more than words ever could.
And as the final firework lit the sky, they stayed like that, close, hands entwined, sharing a secret that no one could take away.
