Will Byers had always been at the top of his class back in California. Being number one came naturally when there was no one to challenge him. But when he moved to Hawkins, everything changed.
Mike Wheeler had been the standard-bearer here—quietly brilliant, always at the top, and impossible to ignore. For the first time, Will realized what it felt like to have a rival who could actually push him.
Being in the same class was enough to spark tension, but being in the same friend group turned it into something else entirely. Every lunch became a battlefield of words, every conversation a subtle contest. They bickered over everything—trivial things, important things, and everything in between.
