Work Text:
“Hermes,” Tiresias started, rubbing whatever was left of his eyes.
“No-no-no, wait, Tiri, hear me out on this” Hermes pleaded. “Just think about how nice it would be to have another living creature in the house.”
He thought for a moment before he added “One that could keep you company while I’m at work?” Hermes smiled nervously, trying to come up with any better of a reason to get a cat.
To this Tiresias just sighed. He had to admit, he wasn’t completely against the idea of getting a cat, but he was holding reservations about it mainly because he wasn’t entirely sure if the two of them could keep another living being alive for more than a week.
“I’m just not sure that the two of us could handle such a thing.” Tiresias explained.
“Pft, Of course we could dawling!” Hermes exclaimed, “I’m the greatest messenger there’s ever been, and you have what I’m inclined to call a sixth sense for danger.” He continued.
Tiresias made a sound of indifferent acknowledgement. Almost, but deciding against mentioning that calling himself a messenger seemed like quite the exaggeration from his actual job of mailman.
“And…" Hermes started "the best husband,” He then tried to persuade Tiresias further with a kiss on the cheek.
Tiresias laughed softly at this obvious, yet effective act of persuasion. He thought for a moment.
He then sighed, “Fine,” Tiresias seceded. “Please don’t make me regret this.”
…
The car ride to the animal shelter was relatively tame, save for the fact that the two of them nearly T-boned another driver, but luckily for everyone, nothing actually came of that.
When they arrived and walked through the shelter's doors, a familiar voice greeted them. “Look what the cat dragged in, what are you two lovebirds doing here?”
“Hello Circe,” Tiresias said calmly, nodding his head.
“Hi circle, We're looking to adopt." Hermes added.
Circe started to say something about how never in a million years did she expect Tiresias to let Hermes persuade him into something like this, but was rudely interrupted by a loud crash.
Circe looked at the door in the back room with a look of concern, then looked back at the two men in confusion before yelling "AEOLUS WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING BACK THERE?" Catching both Hermes and Tiresias off guard.
She rushed over to the door and when she opened it, the three of them were greeted by the sight of Aeolus on the floor covered in at least 3 kittens and their two incredibly tired looking parents.
The two older cats were of different breeds. The mother was a black cat with a long fluffy coat, and was seemingly missing both of their eyes. The other was an orange cat with heterochromia. As was expected their kits were a mix of both. Some of them were orange with a longer coat, and some were black with different colored eyes.
Aeolus then apologized about whatever the hell was happening back there. They explained how they had found the family of cats in a box outside of their door this morning. Aeolus then pulled out of their pocket the only other thing that was in the box, a note that said, verbatim, "We, sadly, can no longer take care of two, let alone five cats, and we are so sorry to leave them here on your doorstep like this, but we have no choice."
"I hate to say it, but we've run out of room at the shelter and I'm not sure what to do with them…" Aeolus mumbled.
There was a moment of silence.
Hermes looked at his husband, praying that he had the same thought as him.
Tiresias sighed, sensing Hermes' glance, relented, what's the worst that could happen?
"We're about to adopt 5 fucking cats," he muttered under his breath.
Hermes laughed, "Yes we absolutely are dawling" He said with a goofy looking grin on his face.
It didn't take nearly as long as either of them thought it would to finish up all of the paperwork required to adopt the cats.
Both Hermes and Tiresias signed the last of the papers and were now, somehow, the proud owners of 5 cats. They proceeded to get all the things they thought they might need to take care of them and were on their way.
They were walking out of the shelter when they heard Circe yell, "Don't kill them immediately m'kay?!"
"You wound me," Hermes replied, feigning hurt.
As the two of them were driving home Tiresias picked up one of the kittens from the basket they had somehow ended up with. As he scritched the kit behind its ears he asked Hermes a question.
"Do you think this was a good idea?"
Hermes thought for a moment before replying.
"Yeah…Yeah I do."
He lightly patted the kitten in Tiresias' lap that was now looking up at him wide-eyed on the head.
Hermes smiled.
"I really do."
