Work Text:

“I often find myself wondering what my life would be like if I hadn’t met you,” Trevor says.

They’re laid in bed together. His head is on Simon’s chest. One of Simon’s hands is in Trevor’s hair, absentmindedly playing with the strands between his fingers. He’s focused on watching some video on his phone. The TV is on. Trevor’s eyes have been focused on it but for the past half hour he hasn’t paid attention to what’s going on. It’s something o’clock in the afternoon. He doesn’t really pay attention to the time nowadays, or what day it is, for that matter.

Simon draws his attention from his phone to look at Trevor. “Yeah?”

Trevor nods against him. “It’s certainly not anything I was expecting. I come back from my year and a half vacation to another dimension hoping to start back up my career just to get arrested again, and then I met you. And then Wonder Man happened, and then it didn’t happen for me, and then I was in prison for a couple of months.” He drawls. “And then you broke me out. And now we’re here together.”

“I guess it is an unlikely form of events.” Simon laughs warmly.

Trevor nods again. “It makes me wonder sometimes what would’ve happened if Cleary had assigned me to someone else. I think if it was anyone but you, I would’ve followed through with it.”

“I don’t think I would’ve gotten this far if it weren’t for you,” Simon says. It’s honest. They both know it.

“Oh heavens no.” Trevor chuckles. “Poor thing, wouldn’t have made it past the audition.”

“Wouldn’t have even gotten there.”

Trevor smiles. He tilts his head up high enough so he can press a kiss to Simon’s jawline.

There’s a silence that passes between them. Then, Trevor speaks again.

“Maybe I would’ve gotten my sentence cleared, at the cost of making someone’s life hell. Probably would’ve gone back to acting. Died doing what I love.”

Suddenly, Simon’s face changes. He clenches his eyes shut like he does when he wants to ask a question he doesn’t want the answer to. Trevor catches it immediately.

“Talk to me, beautiful.” Trevor finds Simon’s hand. Gently squeezes it. Simon squeezes back.

He takes a long breath in. “Do you regret it? Meeting me?”

Trevor picks up that hand and brings it to his lips. “No, never.” He whispers against his knuckles.

“But what you said about getting to die doing what you love,” Simon breathes. “If it weren’t for me being the one you were assigned, you’d be doing that right now.” He shakes his head. “And I’m the one stopping you from acting ever again ‘cause I broke you out.”

“Love,” Trevor says. “What I have with you is far better than any movie I could ever be in.”

“You could be doing what you love.” Simon looks away, and then Trevor’s propping up on his elbows; brings a hand up to Simon’s cheek, caresses it tenderly and beckons Simon to look at him. He obliges.

“You are what I love, darling.” And he presses a soft kiss to his lips. “You’re everything to me.”

Simon chuckles softly. “You’d rather hide away from the government with me for the rest of your life?”

“And quote Shakespeare with you all day and all night. And listen to your rambles and feel your gentle touches. Yes, Simon. In every universe. In every lifetime.”

Simon smiles clumsily and looks away. Trevor wants to memorise the way his eyes close when he has honest-to-god purely overjoyed happiness. The way he starts laughing and can’t stop.

His eyes meet back with Trevor’s after a few moments. Trevor is still looking at him with that oh-too-fond expression on his face.

“I love you more than anything,” Trevor says. Simon knows it’s true.

“I love you more than the universe,” Simon echoes, and then he’s putting his lips on Trevor’s before he even has the chance to protest.
