Work Text:
Jaehyun is a dog.
Well, not really, but Jaehyun’s working theory is that something went wrong when he was being created, and they sent him down to his mother to be born with a few traits meant for dogs. Jaehyun is all human at first glance, even at second glance you wouldn't notice anything weird about him. Most people who are around Jaehyun for more than ten minutes do start to see it, though, and Jaehyun has been compared to an overgrown puppy many times in his life. There’s a few things the average person notices about him.
Firstly, Jaehyun was a bit excitable. It was like he was a dog with zoomies, and they never seemed to cease.
Secondly, Jaehyun was a cuddler. Anyone he deemed a friend, or hopefully a future friend, could expect to be showered in physical affection, because he just loved everyone so much.
Lastly, and probably Jaehyun’s most embarrassing dog-like trait, he liked the way people smelled. Well, maybe this was specific to Han Dongmin, Jaehyun’s roommate and best friend. Jaehyun really likes the way Dongmin smells.
Dongmin was probably the only person in the world who wasn't put off by Jaehyun. He tolerated a lot of Jaehyun’s antics, and Jaehyun really couldn’t have asked for a better roommate.
Dongmin always accompanies Jaehyun on his late night walks when his overflowing energy keeps him up and is bothersome to ignore. He always indulges Jaehyun when he needs some physical contact, never shying away from Jaehyun’s needy grip and even offering to cuddle when Jaehyun is visibly stressed. To Jaehyun’s delight, the other man doesn’t seem to notice Jaehyun’s fixation with smelling him. It's really a perfect arrangement. Jaehyun’s crush on Dongmin is barely an issue. That is, until Dongmin changes his scent, and suddenly Jaehyun feels a lot more like a feral dog than a cuddly one.
Jaehyun’s patience is tested on a Monday morning, one that is exciting for their little household. Dongmin is preparing for his interview with a music label, one that would have him as a paid intern. Dongmin steps out of his bedroom after breakfast, dressed neatly in a simple black button up and black slacks. His dark hair is pushed out of his face and he’s wearing the dress shoes that Jaehyun bought him for the interview, the man not owning a pair of nice shoes before then. Jaehyun’s breath catches once he looks up from his phone, lying on the couch. Dongmin always wears dark colors, Jaehyun should absolutely be used to this, but the way he has the shirt rolled up to his elbows makes Jaehyun a little bit crazy. Dongmin turns to Jaehyun, eyes expectant.
“Do I look normal? Or do I look like a douche bag?” Dongmin asks, putting his arms out to give Jaehyun a full view. Jaehyun wants to tell Dongmin that he’d be hot even if he looked like a douche bag, but that seems a bit inappropriate. He swallows, gaining his composure.
“You look really nice. You’ll have them hiring you on the spot, I'm sure.” Jaehyun answers, getting up from the couch with a stretch. Dongmin snorts, putting his hands on his hips.
“That really didn’t answer my question.” Dongmin throws back, but Jaehyun has already moved on from complimenting Dongmin’s appearance and is ready for his goodbye hug. As he approaches, arms wide open, Dongmin just snorts again, fully fond, and opens his arms. Jaehyun rushes forward faster now that he’s being beckoned in, and falls into Dongmin with familiar ease. Jaehyun’s nose moves to Dongmin’s neck immediately, Jaehyun doesn’t even do it consciously, and he's ready to breathe in the familiar smell of Dongmin that always puts him at ease.
Dongmin’s natural smell was pleasant, a mild scent that was hard to describe as anything other than Han Dongmin. Dongmin’s usual cologne always seemed to enhance that smell, a spray made of something with vanilla, caramel and a hint of almond. It was warm, sweet, and comforting. It was very Dongmin, who was a beacon of warmth and safety in Jaehyun’s life. When he breathes in deeply, he’s met with the startling realization that Dongmin smells different.
This was a new cologne and the smell is intoxicating. The new smell still had a hint of vanilla, but it was woody and slightly spicy. Jaehyun stilled in Dongmin’s arms, going rigid. Dongmin smelled sexy and expensive, and Jaehyun might be in deep trouble if he keeps thinking about how sexy Dongmin is.
Dongmin notices Jaehyun’s behavior, and Jaehyun wishes he hadn't. Dongmin's deep, concerned voice flowing directly into his ears.
“Something wrong?” He asks, the rumble of his chest and throat vibrating Jaehyun’s face.
Jaehyun has to think fast, throw out some fancy lie.
“You smell different.” Jaehyun mumbles against his shoulder. Jaehyun facepalms internally, but blames the way Dongmin’s cologne is attacking his brain cells for his lack of composure.
“Oh? like, bad?” Dongmin asks, and Jaehyun can hear the uncertainty in his voice.
“No, it's nice.” Jaehyun assures, because his own pride is less important than Dongmin’s confidence. Nice doesn’t really cut it, but Jaehyun shouldn’t say as much.
Dongmin pulls Jaehyun away from his neck, studying his face as if he’s trying to tell if Jaehyun is being genuine. He’ll find no dishonesty there, and Jaehyun can only hope his face isn't too red. Dongmin smiles after a bit, seemingly satisfied with his investigation.
“Jaehyun approved, huh? I was worried it would bother you since you're so sensitive to smell.” Dongmin says casually. Jaehyun tries to not scream at the realization that Dongmin definitely noticed that Jaehyun smells him all the time. Jaehyun does have a sensitive nose in general, and Dongmin doesn’t seem to think it's too weird.
“Absolutely not bothering me.” Jaehyun responds, a bit too truthfully. It only seems to make Dongmin smile harder.
“I'm glad!” He says, squeezing Jaehyun’s waist once before letting him go. “I gotta go, wish me luck!”
Jaehyun is left in a haze of Dongmin’s scent and a bit hot under the collar.
Dongmin gets the job, because he’s Dongmin and there’s really nothing he can’t do. As a result of his new job, the evil (sexy) cologne becomes a frequent visitor. Dongmin dresses as nicely as he did for the interview every every time he leaves for work. His hair slicked back and the scent radiating from his pulse points. As usual, he hugs Jaehyun everyday before he leaves, and Jaehyun pretends everything is cool. Everything is normal, and Jaehyun has found that his daily cold showers have really helped getting him awake in the morning.
Despite his best efforts and insane amounts of control, it only takes about two weeks for Jaehyun to break.
It's a Saturday, so Dongmin is off. Jaehyun’s unpredictable schedule miraculously lines up with Dongmin’s, giving them the day off together. Dongmin has always been a hard worker, and with his new job he’s been burning the candle at both ends a bit. He came home late the night before, so Jaehyun woke up early to cook them breakfast to show his support. Jaehyun isn’t a chef, but he thinks he can fry an egg and flip a few pancakes pretty well. He's in the zone, soft music playing from the speaker as he hums along. Jaehyun is so wrapped up, he doesn't hear Dongmin's steps sneaking up behind him. Arms wrap around his waist, startling him for only a second before he relaxes. Dongmin rests his chin on Jaehyun's shoulder, and the smell of his cologne overwhelms him in seconds. Why the fuck was he wearing the cologne on a Saturday?
“Breakfast?” Dongmin says next to his ear, his deep morning voice doing too much to Jaehyun’s head and making him shiver slightly.
“Yeah," Jaehyun's hand shakes as he flips the pancake. "you've been working so hard so I thought I'd do something nice for you.”
Jaehyun is impressed that he sounds so calm.
Dongmin just hums in acknowledgement. Against his better judgment, Jaehyun lets Dongmin linger. Dongmin rarely initiates physical contact, but it’s not entirely out of place for Dongmin to hug him, especially when he’s sleepy or stressed. It's always a nice reminder that Dongmin wants to touch him and doesn’t just indulge Jaehyun to be polite.
Jaehyun’s composure is tested when has to turn off the burner because Dongmin has his nose against his neck. His breath catches in his throat, and his heart starts pounding hard. Dongmin has never done this before.
“What are y-”
“You smell like my new cologne.” Dongmin cuts off, his voice sounds odd to Jaehyun's red ears. Jaehyun shivers, and turns in Dongmin’s arms. He sees that Dongmin is dressed for work, putting a hold on the butterflies in Jaehyun’s stomach as he gets irritated.
“Where are you going?” Jaehyun asks even though he knows. Dongmin at least has the decency to look guilty, keeping his hands on Jaehyun's hips. His thumb slips underneath the hem of Jaehyun’s shirt and presses into his hip bone. Jaehyun’s butterflies come back much to his chagrin, and his heart skips a beat at the contact.
“I was going to go work on something my senior assigned me so I could get ahead a bit.” Dongmin admits, looking a bit bashful as he speaks. Jaehyun's resolve is hanging on by a thread, and he feels close to begging. He's not sure if he wants to beg for Dongmin to stay home and rest, or to kiss him. Ideally, both.
“Dongminnie…”
“I know, I'm sorry. But don't worry, I won’t stay too long.” Dongmin says, flashing his charming smile at Jaehyun. This is Dongmin’s second mistake. The third comes immediately after, when he squeezes Jaehyun's side playfully, his fingertips sending chills up Jaehyun’s spine. Jaehyun yelps, and grabs Dongmin's bicep to stop him. Dongmin laughs, but Jaehyun isn't laughing. His face is red, his heart is pounding, and Jaehyun isn’t sure even a cold shower could calm him now. Dongmin notices Jaehyun’s lack of response, and falters.
“Jaeh-”
"Don’t go to work. Please." Jaehyun pleads. He's about to do something very stupid. Dongmin looks at him, confused.
“Why?” He asks, titling his head slightly to the side. He looks so cute, a strand of his hair falling from his slicked back hair to land in front of his face. Jaehyun squeezes his arm again, attempting to gain some control over himself, then fully breaks a second later. He grabs the front of Dongmin's black button up shirt with so much force he’s sure he breaks a button or two, and pulls him forward, crashing their lips together.
Jaehyun feels Dongmin freeze against his lips, and the spell is broken as Jaehyun begins to panic, pulling away from Dongmin. Dongmin is looking at him, eyes wide and expression neutral.
“Fuck! I'm sorry, that was so stupid! Forget-”
Dongmin cuts Jaehyun off by pulling him back in by his hips and kissing the words off his lips. Jaehyun melts into the second kiss, just as demanding as the first but Dongmin is in the lead now. Jaehyun goes dizzy as Dongmin moves his lips against Jaehyun's with so much want, a silent confirmation that Jaehyun wasn’t the only one holding back until now. Dongmin's cologne fills his senses and Jaehyun has to squeeze his biceps to stop himself from floating away. Eventually, Dongmin pulls away slightly to rest his forehead on Jaehyun’s, and they're both panting. Jaehyun opens his eyes, and Dongmin is looking right at him. His face is now all flushed, his lips slick and red. Jaehyun thinks Dongmin is even prettier with his eyes all starry like this.
“Jaehyun?” Dongmin asks, starting to look nervous as Jaehyun is silent.
“Dongminnie, you definitely can't go to work now. I'm not letting you leave after kissing me like that.” Jaehyun says with a smile. Dongmin smiles back, a small laugh falling from his lips.
“You kissed me first, silly.”
“Yeah I did. I wanna keep kissing you if that's okay with you?” Jaehyun says, hoping he's not grossly misreading this situation.
“What? Do you like me or something?” Dongmin jokes, but Jaehyun can see a bit of worry in his eyes. Or maybe its hope. Jaehyun thinks it's a bit sweet that Jaehyun could kiss Dongmin like that, and the other still does not assume his feelings.
“Yes, I do. And your sexy cologne has been driving me fucking crazy.” Jaehyun says, squeezing Dongmin's arm again. Dongmin looks a bit shocked at Jaehyun’s confession, but then he gets a smirk on his face that most definitely spells trouble for Jaehyun.
“You think it's sexy?” Dongmin says lowly, bringing his face close to Jaehyun’s again. Jaehyun swallows, his heart rate picking up again, and nods.
Dongmin raises one hand from its grip on Jaehyun's waist and puts it on the side of Jaehyun's neck.
“Is this why you've been extra clingy before I leave for work?” Dongmin asks, clearly teasing. Jaehyun now avoids his eyes.
“I'm not answering any more of your silly questions unless you agree to stay home today.” Jaehyun says with a pout. Dongmin laughs, and presses his thumb into the middle of Jaehyun's bottom lip, causing Jaehyun to gasp. Dongmin raises an eyebrow at Jaehyun’s reaction, but doesn’t say anything.
“I'll stay. I'll be too distracted now to get anything done.” Dongmin reassures him with a smile. Jaehyun feels his shoulders relax at that.
"Can we kiss again?" Jaehyun asks, against Dongmin's thumb. The other doesn't respond, only shifting his hand and leaning in, closing the distance again.
Dongmin pushes him against the counter behind them, and the kiss gets a bit more heated once Jaehyun’s back hits the marble. Dongmin bites Jaehyun's lip, causing him to gasp and then Dongmin licks into Jaehyun’s mouth with authority, like he knows exactly what he wants. Jaehyun thinks passively that maybe Dongmin had been imagining a moment like this as well.
Jaehyun can't hold back the needy whines and moans Dongmin drags out of him. They pull away to breathe better, but Dongmin doesn't stop, planting kisses on Jaehyun's neck, causing him to whine embarrassingly.
“If I'd known you sounded like this, I would've done this a long time ago.” Dongmin says against his throat, breath tickling him a bit. Jaehyun laughs, and uses his hand to bring Dongmin back up to face him.
“You would have? What, do you like me or something?” Jaehyun throws back at him, although he's about 90% sure of the answer to that now. Dongmin smiles.
“So fucking much, Myung Jaehyun.” He says, and it sends Jaehyun’s heart into overdrive. His face flushes so hard he gets a little dizzy, and hides his face in Dongmin’s neck. Dongmin laughs at him.
“Don’t be shy, you literally just kissed him out of nowhere.” Dongmin teases, and Jaehyun snaps his head up at the false information.
“Out of nowhere? I remember you not only hugging me from behind, but also sticking your nose to my neck and commenting how I smelled like you.” Jaehyun rants, poking Dongmin square in his chest with his pointer finger. “ I think you were coming on to me.”
Dongmin blushes at that.
“I wasn’t, or at least not consciously. You just looked so cute standing there making us food while wearing my shirt. I didn’t know how else to deal with my feelings.” He explains, looking at Jaehyun as he speaks. Jaehyun’s eyes look down at his shirt and, yep, definitely not his own, but Dongmin’s. When he got up that morning, he didn’t bother to put a shirt on before he left his room, determined to cook without one. Then he thought about the possibility of an oil burn and quickly threw on the nearest one. Jaehyun thanks his past self for his ridiculousness.
"Do you want breakfast? I was nearly done before you attacked me." Jaehyun jests, resting his hand on the middle of Dongmin's chest, right between his pecs. Jaehyun owes Dongmin a new button up for ripping the buttons off of this one.
"Breakfast sounds nice." Dongmin smiles before bringing Jaehyun in for another dizzying kiss.
Jaehyun thinks passively that Dongmin has always seemed fond of dogs.
