Chapter 1: Cross my Is, dot my Ts

Chapter Text

Soulmate… that is a word that Mole thinks about often, one of the things he remembers from life is what a soulmate is.

Sometimes he feels flashes of joy, or fear, or anger. Because that's how his soulmate feels.

Mole feels quite bad that they can feel the utter despair he feels in those tunnels.

He hoped that his soulmate would come and help him. That he could leave this awful place behind.

But he knew that would not be

He knew that he would be stuck in this station, Manning these trains, for the rest of his life.

Not to mention Acedia. Mole didn't want to think about what she would do to him if he wasn't entertaining anymore.

“Don't think like that” he muttered to himself “focus on your task”.

***********
Walking was nice, it helped Blu clear his head. He and Lucy chatted for a while until they set up camp.

Then he wasn't walking. And he felt dread creep up inside him.

He knew this dread was from his soulmate, for the past month or so they had been feeling nothing but fear and pain.

Blu felt horrible that he couldn't help his soulmate. At least not now. He had to take care of Lucy and CG, not go out searching for someone who could be in a different country all together.

He just hoped that they would be safe soon.

Lucy sat down next to him and frowned. “You look sad, what's going on?” Blu sighed, “My soulmate is feeling upset, I'm a- ok though”

“Again?” Said Lucy sadly “Your soulmate has been feeling sad a lot, do you think we could help them?”

CG looked happy about this idea “Yeah! I would love a new friend!”

Blu leaned back “ I want to help them, but we can't know if they even live in the same country as us, we should focus on survival first.”

Lucy looked upset at this idea.

CG hopped up next to Blu “what does having a soulmate feels like!? I don't have one since I'm a robot, and Lucy isn't sixteen yet so neither of us know!”

Blu thought for a moment. Having a soulmate was quite strange. You could feel a brief flash of emotion from your soulmate.

When he was younger his soulmate was very happy.

When Blu was in the war he would feel the joy that his soulmate had and it made him feel slightly better.

His soulmate had always been a happy person until the sun hatched. Since then they had been feeling nothing but misery. He hoped that his feelings made them feel slightly better.

“Well, having a soulmate is like having a cable that transmits one single emotion that your soulmate is having into your brain. It isn't a super intense feeling, it more… lingers at the back of your mind.”

CG looked impressed at the answer “ Wow! I wish I had a soulmate!!” Lucy laughed. “Who knows! Maybe you have a robo-soulmate!”

That idea got Lucy and CG caught up in a new conversation and that left Blu to wonder.

What if he could find his soulmate?

………

Mole worked in the tunnels. He could feel the cold seeping in and swallowed. He knew that when the cold came, Acedia was close by.

“Ḩ̷̊̈́e̶̹̬̋́l̶̬͚̾͝l̷͓̀͐o̸̰̊ ̷̛͖̆m̷͈̆ö̴͈̱l̶̤̤̔̀ë̸̩̠̈́ ̴̼͙̈́͗.” Said Acedia robotically. “Ḯ̴̲ ̷̘̈́s̴͗ͅe̵̜̅e̸͓̿ ̶̰͂ÿ̴̹́o̷͔͠ů̵͚ ̸͓̃ă̴͍r̸͉͒e̸̟͊ ̵̧̾w̵͍͐o̸̠̅r̷̙̚ḵ̸̛ḯ̸̫n̴̛̳g̷͍̒ ̸̬̀ḫ̴̚a̶̤͠r̸͙̿d̶̗̄?”

Mole gulped “u-uh yes, I am”

Acedia stared into him with her many eyes “Î̶̥ ̶̦͂k̴̝̋ḙ̵̃é̷̹p̶̺͊ ̷̡́ÿ̵͜o̶̧̚u̵̞̒ ̸̤͠ a̶͍̒l̴͖͒ȉ̴̲ṽ̸̞e̷̘̽ ̶̫̑ ō̷̙n̴̪͠l̷̖̑y̵͕̓. ̶͗ͅb̵̭͗ḙ̴̑c̴̜̅a̷̘͐u̵̖̿s̵̬͝ȇ̷̦ ̸̞̓y̸̡̅ö̶͓́ú̸̼ ̵̞̒e̵̽͜n̸̺̔t̶̛̫ë̶̪́r̶͚̂t̸͍͠ä̵̮i̴̼͝n̸̼͗ , ̸̳̿m̷͍̓e̴̩͂ ,̸̧͛ ̵̡͆d̶͍̀ö̷̭ ̷̰́n̵̤̾ǫ̴̚t̴̗̊ ̴̭́ d̷̳̿i̴̞̇s̴̼̒a̷̛͔p̸̡̐ṕ̷̰o̷̜͠i̸͓͘ṋ̴̐ẗ̶̢́”

She slithered away, leaving Mole to exhale from relief that nothing bad happened.

He quickly got back to work, ignoring the sudden feeling of happiness he got.

At least his soulmate was happy.
