The Inns Saga

Summary:

Our exhausted group of intrepid heroes check into an inn for the night. What awaits them in their room?

(Bingo prompts: Too many beds, "don't lie to me")

Notes:

It started with one 'too many beds' story, but as I was writing out the summary, a new idea struck me that I didn't want to let go to waste. And then a second idea struck me as I was writing the new story. So now have four installments as our heroes try to catch some sleep. Will they be successful?

Chapter 1: At the Hoof and Hammer Inn

Chapter Text

The centaurs were very grateful for the six heroes who had saved their town from the evil blight that had been creeping upon their lands, and after a sumptuous feast the six were escorted to the local inn for some well-deserved shut-eye. They had been given their finest room, they were assured; fit for a king.

It was a fine room, indeed, with silken drapes, thick fur rugs, and a soft downy bed.

One bed.

Sure, it was horse-sized, but with a half-orc in their party, that still didn’t leave a lot of room for the rest of the group. The rogue opened his mouth to complain, but the fighter clamped his hand over his mouth and smiled brightly, thanking their hosts for such delightful accommodations.

Well, it’s not like they haven’t had to deal with a single bed before. No, it was more like they had only been dealing with single beds on this entire adventure.

“At least it’s a larger bed…” hazarded the cleric, eyeing up the size of the mattress.

They all prepared themselves for slumber and then packed themselves into the bed. The barbarian, as the largest, went first, nestling himself in the middle. Next came the bard and the rogue, the smallest of the group, as they snuggled in on either side of the barbarian (the rogue, a goblin, climbing practically on top of the half-orc). Next the wizard slipped in between the blankets to sleep next to the rogue, and on the opposite side of the bed the cleric took up the edge of the bed, sandwiching the bard between her and the barbarian.

Lastly, the fighter – who had taken the longest to prepare for bed thanks to his intricate skin-care routine, climbed into bed next to the wizard, snuggling up with the group. Thus, all six managed to make themselves cozy in bed, barely fitting on the large mattress.

They slept rather soundly, though – as usual – they woke up cramped and hot.

But they were used to that.
