R E A D Y

Summary:

"Because I'm ready to leave, I'm ready to live - I'm ready to go."

Work Text:

Jungkook cursed under his breath as he tugged the steering wheel just in time to avoid a pothole that had appeared amongst the winding highway. It was the 7th one of the evening, and he only knew so because he had been keeping count; trying to avoid every last one of them as to not wake the passenger next to him. When he finally straightened back up and thanked the heavens that this stretch of road was so desolate, he also allowed himself to cast a glance over at the blonde haired boy who still rested peacefully despite the swerve of the vehicle.

He’d never get over how beautiful Jimin was, with long eyelashes and plump lips that made him want to kiss the boy for an eternity. So many times he had begged him not to tag along, that he was more gorgeous than the city that twinkled with lights below the cliff they drove on, and never deserved to know someone as bitter as Jungkook. He’d argued with him time and time again about how he wasn’t meant for this town and planned to be as far away from it as possible, to which Jimin always cooed sweet reassurances, grabbing his fingertips to intermingle them with his own. Repeatedly he’d bring them to his lips to kiss each tip, his eyes always soft and too full of love, too full of promise. Even as he slept peacefully now, after having driven miles already, Jimin was making too many sacrifices; leaving the life he had built for himself for one that he would never fully understand.

Jimin was too pretty to be running in the manner that Jungkook was- desperate to find what was on the other side and leave what was left of the small life he had. People liked Jimin, cherished him, loved him in ways that he would never know, and still, he chose to ride in the passenger seat of a beat up Mustang.

With a small groan, the blonde rubbed at his eyes before pulling the seat up to inspect his surroundings. Jungkook didn’t have to look at him to know his gaze was focused far below the edge of the cliff they drove next to, his eyes immediately travelling along each light that offered small speckles against the night sky. He gasped slightly before turning to look at Jungkook with a smile that seeped into his eyes and excitement flickering behind his gaze, and with lips parted to speak, he was only silenced by the weight of Jungkook’s harsh words.

“Why did you come with me, Jimin?” He asked as tears started to prickle at the edges of his vision, even though he promised himself he wouldn’t cry. He’d pleaded with the older boy not to come with him, but Jimin had made up his mind and there was nothing he could do about it, even if hewas the last person who deserved this. They were getting closer now, and there was no turning back around; the only thought that softened the blow was the thought of them being together.

Jimin sighed through a smile, knowing the conversation that he was getting into without knowing why it was necessary. Just as he always had in the past, he linked his fingers between the spaces of Jungkook’s. Even harder, his tears dared to spill over his cheeks as he felt the warmth of Jimin’s palm against his, his pulse barely felt against his skin- the pulse that wouldn’t be there for much longer.

“Because. I’m ready.” Jimin smiled, softly chuckling at how cheesy he sounded and leaning forward with his laughter in a way that was all his own. “I’m ready to leave, I’m ready to live…. I’m ready to go.”

And oh, how ironic it was to Jungkook; his cheerful tone and ever hopeful words finally making the tears roll down his cheeks as his foot pressed the gas pedal one more time. The sound of the engine revving was the last thing Jungkook had heard, as everything else became utterly silent as they were hurtled off of the pavement, the tires finding the edge of the cliff and descending towards the town he’d always sworn Park Jimin was too good for.
