Summary
Not the frantic parent from Room 8, nor her friend. Not another checked-in patient or someone with a visitor's sticker slapped to their chest. Instead, a woman stands, looking pale with flushed cheeks, shaky, hair sticking to her face with a thick sheen of sweat that contrasts with the typical chilled air outside of Nebraska in November. Hollow eyes hung in a gaunt face blink at him, a hood pulled over her face as if to block it from anyone who might be around them.
She breathes like she’s just run a marathon, chest heaving underneath the baggy jacket she wears, puffed into ragged gasps that curl slightly with the chill she still carries from being outside. There is a smell of something in the air, thick and palpable even through the wash of antiseptic, but Robby can’t quite pin it down other than being strongly metallic and slightly musky. But even after Robby looks at her, takes in the fragile state she’s in, that’s not what makes shock seize his heart.
No, it's the baby clutched to her chest, wrapped in something patched and cooing softly.
