Work Text:
The door nearly flies off its hinges when Wildcard smashes it open. He stomps furiously and sits himself in the large armchair dominating the room.
He cannot believe he’s been sidelined from the mission. He’s got all the powers, it makes no sense to not send him.
Missy is reorganizing her swords when she hears a massive cacophony from down the hall. She kind of knows already who’s behind the noise, but she feels the need to investigate anyway. Missy pads down to the lounge room, AKA WIldcard’s favourite room in the whole building. Sitting in the armchair is Wildcard with crossed arms and a majorly disgruntled expression.
“Is this because I didn’t assign you to the mission?”.
Wildcard looks over at her
“What do you think it is? You’re being so stupid, I mean, I have every power ever, why can’t you see how useful that is?”.
“Wildcard, it’s not even that sensitive of a mission, I only sent Rewind and Facemaker because only two people are needed.”.
Wildcard’s insides liquified from rage. He’s almost had it with Missy and her implications towards him.
“I just hate that you’re implying I can’t do it!” He yells.
“Oh, don’t be so touchy!” Missy yells back “I thought you were over this!”.
“I am over this, I just don’t want to feel useless again!”.
The words dissipate into the air, leaving behind a wake of silence. Missy grits her teeth, unsure how to handle this situation. Wildcard harumphs and turns away.
“I’m sorry.” Missy blurts.
Wildcard rolls his eyes. “That’s a dumb thing to say.” He hisses, tears pooling in his eyes and voice shaking.
“I’m specifically sorry for, making you feel like that.” Missy elaborates.
“Oh.” Is all Wildcard says.
He draws in a few breaths to calm himself.
“Thanks for apologizing. But you didn’t need to.”.
“Of course I had to.”.
“You didn’t. Feeling useless is normal for me.”.
Missy can’t help the cringe on her face. Wildcard’s statement laps at her heart and activates an emotion that is best described as
OH
“Stop looking at me like that.” Wildcard protests.
“Sorry-”
“And stop saying sorry.”.
Both fall silent, Missy standing with her arms at her sides and Wildcard stewing in his chair.
And then-
“Did you know my name isn’t actually Wildcard?”.
Missy looks up.
“For my fifth birthday, my dad let me pick out a superhero name, and I chose Wildcard. I’m not telling you my real name by the way, so don’t even ask.”.
“Oh man, maybe I should ask my dad for that. Missy is a pretty bad name.”.
After this, there’s a stretch of them trying to formulate the right words, but neither are particularly quick at this sort of thing.
“I’m sorry too.”.
“Huh?”.
“I’m sorry for being so whiny earlier.”.
“You know what, I kinda get it.” Missy sympathizes. “I sometimes feel a little useless too.”.
Wildcard raises an eyebrow. “You? You’re the leader, and we accept you as leader for a reason.”.
“I don’t know.” MIssy runs a hand through her hair. “All I really do is bark orders, I feel like Ms Granada. I’m not sure if it’s fair that I get to give speeches and kiss babies more than the others when they’re doing all the legwork.”.
Wildcard quirks his head and makes a face.
“But you,” Missy starts “you contribute a ton. I think you’re being a little stupid by focusing so much on all the things that upset you instead of having appreciation for the things that don’t.”.
“And you’re being a little stupid by not remembering that all the other kids need to be organized or they get nothing done. There’s more to being a superhero than punching and running and stuff.”.
Missy laughs. “When did you get so insightful?”.
Wildcard grins. “Hey, I’m me, I’m always insightful.”.
“There’s the you I know and love.” She claps him on the shoulder.
“You know what, I think you’re awesome, and you think I’m awesome, why can’t we just be awesome together?”.
“Deal.”.
