Work Text:
The sun was shining, casting warmth on feudal Japan. Sango usually liked playing outside in that weather, but that day her focus was exclusively on her mother... and the baby that was growing in her stomach. The little girl often talked to it, felt it kick, or tried to guess its gender. She absolutely loved the idea of being a big sister, already picturing herself taking care of her younger sibling.
"Mommy, when is my little brother or sister gonna be there?"
At almost five years old, she didn't even worry about losing her parents' attention. She already loved that baby as much as everyone else, perhaps even more.
"In about a month, sweetheart. What would you prefer, a girl or a boy?"
That was an easy question for little Sango.
"I'd like a little brother, but if it's a sister I'll still love her anyways!"
Her mom patted her head affectionately. This child really was an angel.
"Good answer~"
A month later, just as promised, her mother was giving birth. Sango waited outside with her father, worried about the cries of pain that she could hear. Was mom okay? Was something wrong with the baby? Her father noticed and took her in his arms.
"Don't worry, it's normal for your mommy to scream. It hurts a lot, but your little sibling makes it worth all the pain. It's also a bit easier, since she had you before."
Sango nodded, reassurance found in her innocent brown eyes.
A few minutes later, both of them were allowed inside, finally getting to witness the beautiful sight of a mother and her newborn.
"It's a little boy, just like you wanted, Sango!"
The little girl squealed with joy, immediately coming forward to have a good look at her baby brother.
"He's beautiful, I love him!"
Indeed, he was adorable, tiny and a bit chubby and pink-faced.
"We decided, your father and I, to call him Kohaku."
"Ko-ha-ku? I like that name, it fits him a lot."
At that moment, tiny little Kohaku started crying. Before either of their parents could do anything, Sango was already trying her best to comfort him, hugging him and talking to him. Soon enough, the newborn little boy calmed down, seemingly liking his big sister's contact. The sight was truly endearing, both siblings cuddled together in front of their parents.
"I love you, Kohaku…" Sango whispered in his ear, a cute yet possessive smile on her face. She would protect her little brother, no matter what it took…
