Chapter Text
The morning had come and Race found himself waking up to an empty bed in the brooklym lodging house. He had put his hand where Spot should be and realized he wasn't there. He positioned himself upwards to a sitting position and looked around with sleepy eyes.
The evening sun was shining through the window casting a ray of light over his blonde hair. Only thing missing was Spot who he just got married to yesterday.
Luckly Spot came in before Race got out of bed bringing breakfast along with him. "Good morning Mr. Antonio Higgins-Conlon." He kissed his newly wedded husband and gave him his breakfast in bed.
"Good morning!" Race smiled. "What time is it?" He said wiping his eye, still looking sleepy.
"1 p.m. I didn't wanna wake ya." Spot replied admiring the other boy's beauty. "Eat and then we'll go out. I have places I want to take ya."
"Like where?"
"It's a suprise. Can't tell."
"How romantic!" He kissed Spot's cheek and went on to eat the breakfast he brought.
After Race had finish eating and got dressed he made his way down the stairs where Spot was talking to some of the younger newsies. The moment he saw Race he left the younger kids side.
"You look handsome." Spot said offering his hand to hold.
"Well, I'se gotta look my best. I don't know where you is taking me after all."
They made their way through the streets of Brooklyn. Mostly taking roots where they weren't visible so they could hold hands. Where they were going was a small, cozy Itallian restaurant with decent prices that they could somewhat afford.
The alleyway had low lighting and was a little away from the main road so they weren't many customers in the restaurant. And inside there was only a couple of places to sit. They picked the table on one of the corner that was away from the windows.
"So, yer suprise is a restuarant. How did ya find this place?" Race said looking over a menu.
"One of the boys sells near here. He said that an Itallian man opened a new restuarant and the food was nice. So, I thought youse might like it."
"I gotta see the food first then I will decide if I likes it or not." Race smirked.
After Spot struggled to read the menu and order he let Race order for them both. And it was amazing. Spot liked Irish and Hispanic food the most as they reminded him of his childhood but this was one of the best meals he had ever had. Maybe because Race was also there to talk his ears off and he would be there forever.
They left the restuarant after they were done eating and started walking down Brooklyn again.
"Where to now?" Race asked.
"There is one more part to the suprise. Youse will see it when we get there."
"Oh, yer the most romantic gentleman Mr. Spot Conlon-Higgins." He gave a half smile-half smirk.
"I'se got the most wonderful husband, don't I? Why not be romantic for my sweetheart?" Spot said, receiving a laughter in return.
After a long walk they were finally at the docks. The sun was begining to slowly set giving the sky pretty hues of orange, blue and purple. Spot led the other boy to a small white boat and started to untie it from the dock.
"Since when do youse got a boat?" Race asked sitting down.
"I don't, it's a friends. She let me borrow it." They were now getting away from the shore and through the waters of New York. "I wanted you to see what I got planned from a nice spot."
"Not that I'm complainin' but I hope you didn't spend a whole lot of money on this date with the food and the boat and the somethin' else."
"I got enough money, don't worry. And this is no regular date, it's a honeymoon. I know I can't really takes ya to a nice place for weeks like rich folks but I can give you a one good day."
"Now, I feel bad that I didn't plan anything for you." He gave a guilty chuckle. "I mean you proposed and planned this amazing day. I should do somethin' for you too."
"I don't need anything but you." He smiled.
"How about I takes you to a date tomorrow? After work, of course. You'll come over to Manhattan and I'll take ya to someplace nice." He was already thinking about where he could take spot. And boy, he had many ideas.
"I will never say no to a date with you." Spot kissed his hand. "Also, we're here."
They were in the middle of the water away from everyone but still had a pretty good view of the city. The sun was gone and they were starting to see the stars.
"What time is it?"
Race took out his watch from his pocket. "Almost 5.30 p.m."
Spot nodded. "Only a little while to wait then."
"For what?"
"You'll see." He winked.
Afted a few minutes of sitting in silence and looking at the stars the first firework shined its beautiful red color in the sky.
"Was that what you had planned?" Race said in astonishment.
"There is more but yes." And onther firework was glowing in the sky.
One after another pretty colors were lighting up the New York night sky. Blue, yellow, orange, red... it was all so incredible. The couple was sitting on the boat watching all the colors change the sky into a painting in silence.
After the fireworks had ended Race was still in shock. "I can't believe you got fireworks! How did ya get fireworks?" He laughed.
"I stole 'em. They was illegal so they couldn't even report that they was stolen." He smiled.
"I love you, Spot Conlon." He kissed the boy gently.
Spot pulled himself away. "Spot Conlon-Higgins. You gotta be correct with the name now."
"Right, Spot Conlon-Higgins, my amazing husband." Race nodded as he drew the other boy closer again.
