Like normal couples do

Summary:

Normally El would be ecstatic with Mike coming over and spending the night, but not exactly under these circumstances

Notes:

I know that one moment where El made Max fall off her skateboard after seeing Mike laugh with her in s2 was probably played for shits and giggles and to showcase how she had a crush but I took that detail and I ran away with it laughing greedily

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

They’re watching tv in the cabin. Recently, Hopper got a big enough couch that they could lay on it together. Of course, by “lay together” that means Mike lays on El while she is sandwiched between the couch and him.

Hopper is working a late shift today. So it wasn’t hard sneaking Mike into her room throw the window. Then each of them taking a shower, she let Mike go first, considering he got the brunt of the blood on him. Then they burned their old clothes, and El gave him Hopper’s old clothes that were now hers.

She can’t say she didn’t mean for it to happen. Her urges had always been small. Someone’s head suddenly falling into their lunch, someone tripping or stumbling on nothing and tumbling down. She thinks the worst it had been was when she caught a stranger trying to touch him and flicked her hand, watching them howl in pain as their wrist just snapped out of nowhere.

El doesn’t like Mike being caught in it though. It’s not his fault. This person just wouldn’t leave them alone, wouldn’t leave Mike alone. And El stared and wished at one point that they would stop talking, and stop being so annoying, and stop bothering them, then the next thing El knows, the stranger is spewing blood onto Mike. Likely they’re dead now, if by the chunks also in their vomit and Mike’s horrified expression back there.

It was not ideal. Especially since Mike saw her nosebleed before she could wipe it.

“Are you scared of me?” El asks bluntly. It’s not a gentle way to approach the situation but one thing she’s learned with being a Girlfriend, it’s to just say what she means. It makes it more easier in general.

She can feel his head shaking no. He’s been quiet since they got to her house and she wishes he wasn’t. It would be easier for her if he yelled, if he got angry at her, if he filled the silence with his voice and not only let the television do that. This way she would know for certain not to do it again.

“Do you, want to leave?” El probes again. She didn’t realize she had her arms wrapped around him tightly and loosen her hold. She would hate it, but she couldn’t blame him if he did want to go. Especially after tonight.

“No,” he mutters, like El just gave him a stupid question. He then shifts, grabbing the blanket and laying back down so it’s covering the two of them. He glances up towards her impatiently, and then returns back to the movie when she holds him again. A comfortable silence washes over.

El thinks they probably fell asleep, as the next thing she hears is the door jiggle. Mike also jerks, rubbing his eyes at the noise. They look blearily to the sight of Hopper. Who stares back at them questioningly. At least they’re not making out this time, and are in the living room for him to see.

Hopper only sighs, muttering “teenagers” as he trods to his bedroom. Mike lets out a bitter chuckle into her neck at that.
