Chapter Text
Stormbringer Cookie waited at the entrance of the icy palace that Frost Queen Cookie called home. She had been invited by way of a letter. Wind Deity Cookie had handed her the paper, saying it was imbued with the power of crystalline frost. The letter called her here on what Frost Queen called a meeting but what Stormbringer knew was a date. Her clawed feet made sharp indents in the snow as she paced back and forth before the castle.
“You’re Stormbringer Cookie, right?” A voice like tinkling bells rang through the icy scenery, as Stormbringer’s attention was drawn up to the small figure who floated above an opulent archway. The elf was small, his skin a pale blue traced with dark patterns. Pale silver hair fell over his left eye, sharp at the edges and freezing there too. A blue and teal eye stared at her, a twinkling sparkle shining as his smile widened excitedly. A small scarf and a frail coat curled around him in the winter chill, covering dark blue clothes. The staff that he held in his right hand was wooden and traced with bright markings, the tip of the staff wrapped around shifting snow.
“Oh! You’re Frostie’s apprentice right?” Stormbringer floated up, her hair crackling and sparking as she examined the boy before her.
“Sherbet Cookie, your majesty! Come, we must meet with Frost Queen Cookie right now!” He smiled brightly as he swirled around her. Strong sparks meeting small swirls of frost. She tipped her head back and laughed heartily, her voice strong and loud as it echoed across the icy plateau.
“Alright, kid. Show your sky god the path!” Sherbet giggled happily before beginning to float inside the palace. For a while, they glided past murals and depictions of Frost Queen’s legends, some murals of all of the Guardians were littered around too. Soon enough they reached a set of double doors traced with icy patterns. The doors were heavy and wide, the handles bright and opulent.
“She’s here! I’ll give you two some privacy, I gotta go visit an old friend of mine!” He said happily, a light flush appearing on his cheeks as he mentioned this friend. He disappeared into a flurry of frost petals exploding into the air, she huffed lightly and leaned back softly. Her gaze drifted back to the door, a chill permeating her skin before warm sparks drove them back.
“Alright, Queenie, watcha got for me?” She said to the air, praying that Frost Queen wouldn’t notice how fast sparks were flying off of her skin. Great Tree, it always did that when she was nervous, shit.. She ran her hands through her hair, feeling the sparks burn her hands clean through. But as soon as the pain reached her, it healed quickly, leaving only faint scorch marks on her skin. She let out a breath she didn’t realize she had been holding, before placing a hand on the freezing handle, pulling the door open. Her breath was stolen away by the Harbinger of Winter who sat upon her throne of ice, eyes softer than she had seen before. Her legs were crossed and her staff laid across her lap, her hands folded over the length of the fabled artifact. Her spiky ivory hair fell over her right eye, spikes of ice jutting up from the back of her head. The thick powder blue scarf she wore disguising her ice scarred shoulders. Her long azure and white robe cascaded over the edge of her throne, frost pushing up from the ground towards its master. Stormbringer suddenly felt very underdressed, her hair crowding around her shoulders to cover her plain tank top.
“Stormbringer Cookie, welcome.” Her voice was cold, but laced with a subtle affection.
“Hey, Queenie. Ya needed me?” Her insecurity was covered up by a cocky grin and a loud voice which belied the way her body crackled. She was met with a found eyeroll.
“I realized that we haven’t spent proper time together in quite a bit of time.. I wished to do what proper lovers are fabled to do.” The elemental rose up gracefully, soft flurries of snow bounding around at the movement.
“Well,” Stormbringer scoffed. “That’s because you refuse to tell anyone we’re proper lovers.”
“I want to plan something real for the announcement,” Frost Queen struck her staff into the ground, almost a joking motion. “You just want to brag about it to Fire Spirit.” She huffed, almost a laugh. Stormbringer let out an exaggerated gasp, bringing a hand to her chest.
“How could you! That is a great offense to your Sky God!” She rattled off one of her signature lines, watching carefully for her companion’s reaction. A small huff came from the frozen sovereign as she laced an icy hand with Stormbringer’s. The small motion was done so deliberately that it made Storm’s hair spark and crackle.
“Sky God? I haven’t met any Sky God, at least not one who spends all her time stalking mortals.” Frost Queen retorted back easily, her thumb running over Stormbringer’s knuckle.
“They have a duty to appease me!” Golden eyes flared confidently.
“Yes, especially when you happen to be yelling all day with those deities of yours.” Teal eyes narrowed knowingly.
“Hey! They’re much stronger than your little cherub!” Stormbringer shot back, remembering the elf from earlier, what was his name?
“Sherbet Cookie is not a cherub, he is a frost spirit. A herald of Winter in his own right.” The herald of winter’s voice raised ever so slightly, her mouth opening slightly. Stormbringer’s sight narrowed on her lips, she wondered..
“Wonder how MT would react if he found out we created our own subordinates.” The Lord of the Heavens changed the subject, twirling the Heaven Splitter carelessly.
“Well, we each have subordinates. I have my frost spirits, you have your deities, the Cookies that run the dream realm, Tearcrown, Agar Agar, Sugar Swan’s children..” Frost Queen listed, her voice like shifting snowflakes drifting in the frozen breeze.
“Ha.. And the man has us. Ya think he knows about us? Like how he knows about the other four idiots?” Stormbringer floated up and circled her icy partner, her hair sparking with barely restrained electricity.
“Well, he is the Earthbread itself, my love,” the nickname that Frost Queen said so flippantly made Stormbringer falter, her grip tightening on her spear. “One would assume he knows everything.” The queen watched fondly as flurries of snow rose and caressed her frozen form like an old lover. She was not unaware of the way her partner’s eyes narrowed like the snowflakes had personally offended her.
“So,” the electric goddess started. “Whatcha wanna do?” She assumed that her partner had planned something, knowing her.
“Yes, I did prepare a little something..” The icy woman’s cheeks flushed slightly, tilting her head away. Stormbringer noticed immediately.
“What is it? Now you have to show me!” Stormbringer swatted away snowflakes easily, a curious grin on her face. Frost Queen gestured for her to follow and began to walk back to her throne. Her partner cocked her head, confused. Last time she checked there was nothing behind the queen’s throne? Stormbringer scoffed and drifted forward lazily, eyes half lidded as she tried to look around her fellow guardian. Frost Queen reached behind the fabled seat, picking up a box.
“I.. I wanted to give you something. Because today is the anniversary of your triumph against the Black and White Dragon.” Frost Queen turned around, her staff dissipating as she handed the package to her partner. Stormbringer tucked the Heaven Splitter against her back, taking the gift carefully. She removed the lid, confusion still wracking through her mind. It was quickly replaced by awe as she saw what was inside of it. A jewelry set, specifically a circlet, an anklet, and a necklace. The circlet was golden, small lightning bolts darting off of the main body, chains ran down, leading to frozen water droplets at the bottom. At the center of the piece was a black and gold diamond, inlaid into the thing expertly. The anklet matched with the circlet, much the same in the way the small jewels ran down from the body and ended in similar pearls. The necklace was gorgeous, a similar diamond laid into the center of the garment. The chain was made of small frozen pearls, soft and beautiful and lovely all at the same time. The sky god’s face flushed as she stared at the treasures. She had been given so many things over the centuries, hell, Cookies had even gifted her their lives! But none of them compared to this. She was still in such awe that she didn’t notice that Frost Queen was reaching for something else as well. She picked up a wrapped thing, the shimmering foil freezing at her icy touch. When Stormbringer looked up, Frost Queen had unwrapped the gift, holding it in both hands gently. The revered god sputtered, suddenly feeling very hot as she saw what her partner was holding. A crystal ball, much like those from the City of Wizards laid in her hands. The surface was traced with soft frost, meeting roaring lightning as it swirled inside. The pedestal it was on was beautiful too, small snowflakes matched with soft sparks as the legs extended outwards to hold the small object up.
“Great- I..” Stormbringer didn’t know what to say, her cheeks flushed and her eyes wide.
“You don’t have to accept them if you don’t want to.” The Guardian of Frost spoke quickly, pulling her hands back slightly. Stormbringer summoned a cloud quickly, placing the box on it carefully, her mind racing. She reached for the crystal ball, watching as the lightning encased inside responded to her call.
“How.. How on Earthbread did you do all this?” Her eyes flicked back to the jewelry.
“Ah.. Well.. I heard that the anniversary was coming up, and I..” Frost Queen blushed, her cheeks a deep cerulean as she averted her eyes. “I wanted to get you something.” She said finally. When she looked back at Stormbringer, she was met with wide eyes and an ecstatic smile. Stormbringer took the crystal ball gently, placing it on the cloud as well, before she latched onto Frost Queen excitedly. Her laughter echoed through the room as she clinged onto her frozen partner. Her hair curled around them protectively, soft sparks warming them.
“Great Millennial Tree, Frost Queen! I- I don’t get stuff like this..!” She giggled softly as she leaned back. Frost Queen seemed lost in thought for a moment, before she closed the distance between the two. The kiss was soft, tentative. The pair was quiet, it lasted for only a moment before they separated. The two stared at each other for a moment, warmth gathering around them as the elemental magic around them rejoiced. Stormbringer’s mind raced as her hands came up to cup Frost Queen’s cheeks. She smiled softly, an action unheard of from such an arrogant goddess.
“I- T-That was inappropriate..” Frost Queen blushed, looking away.
“Inappropriate?!” Stormbringer laughed. “Frost Queen Cookie, this has single handedly become the best day of my life! And I have had armies laying down their lives before me!” Stormbringer traced the small cracks that traced through Frost Queen’s face.
“I.. I have something to admit, my storm,” Frost Queen’s hands wound through her hair, uncaring of the sparks that scorched through her hands. “I.. Would like to announce it at the next meeting.” She smiled carefully, powder blue eyes searching through deep golden ones.
“REALLY?!” Stormbringer’s mind rejoiced, deep laughter emerging from her chest as lifted her partner up easily, still staring into her eyes. Frost Queen blushed even harder, moved down to bury her face into the crook of her partner’s neck.
“..Yes.” She admitted.
“YES! YOU MEAN I CAN FINALLY-” She was cut off. She felt a cold hand trace the edge of her waist, sending shivers up her spine. Cold breaths were felt against her skin.
“Yes.. But please, quiet down, my love.” Frost Queen huffed lightly. Stormbringer rolled her eyes, small giggles still escaping her mouth. The two stayed there for a while, just talking. Just being with each other. Just existing together. Ice and thunder meeting in the middle, dancing around each other and even reaching to touch.
