Running Through Rose Thorns

Summary:

What if Alex had realized she was gay in high school? What if she had met Maggie before Kara became Supergirl? What if Alex hadn't come out to Kara? What if Lucy had stuck around? What if Eliza had been abusive? Basically Alex and Maggie are in a secret relationship, Kara is clueless and a bit of an uneducated asshole. Eliza was physically and emotionally abusive and now Alex has to deal with that. Also, Alex is figuring out that she is non binary.

Notes:

So, welcome to my first fanfic. Um, context. So, basically Lucy didn't just vanish but stuck around and is now a co-director at the DEO. Alex and Maggie have been dating for about 3 and half years. Kara has no idea. Enjoy!

Chapter Text

Alex's hands shook as she stared at herself in the bathroom mirror. She hated this. Hated the way her shirt clung to her. Hated the way her hair made her neck itch even after she pulled it up. It was stupid, so, so, stupid. Maggie loved the way she looked and she should too. Body positivity and all that. A sudden knock on the door caused Alex to jump.

“Babe, we have to leave in 15 minutes. Are you almost ready? ”

“Um, yeah. Give me a few minutes.”

Alex hurried to pull her sweatshirt over her head. Trying to shake off the feeling that staring in the mirror always gave her, she stepped out of her bathroom.

“Hey, Mags. I'm ready.”

“Hey, love. You look amazing.”

“Thanks.”

Maggie pulled Alex down to her height and kissed her deeply. Alex moaned into Maggie's mouth. She reached out to pull Maggie closer to her. Maggie let out a soft chuckle before stepping away.

“Why?” Alex wined.

“We have to go. Kara will kill us if we are late again. And the excuse of traffic is only going to work so many times.”

“I know, I know. I’m sorry.”

“What are you apologizing for?”

“If I just told Kara, then we wouldn't have to make excuses.”

“Hey.” Alex forced herself to look into the deep brown eyes of her girlfriend. Maggie had never pushed Alex to come out to her family but still Alex felt bad that Maggie had to hide their relationship for Alex.

“Would it be easier for me if I could kiss you in front of all of your friends? Yeah, sure. But would it be what you need? Or want? No. And this - the two of us - it's about us and nobody else.”

“Ok. I love you.”

“I love you too. Now we really do need to go.”

“Alex, Maggie!!” Kara squealed, as soon as they stepped into the apartment. Kara almost knocked them off their feet with the strength with her hug.

“Hey, Little Danvers.” Maggie laughed.

“Heyyy, Danvers, Sawyer.” Lucy drawled from her spot on the couch.

“Mm, hey Luce.” Alex managed to grunt out.

“Lane. Long time no see.” Maggie snorted.

Kara beamed at them.

“So, Kar. What are we playing?” Alex asked.

Kara immediately launched into a spiel about all of the games they could play. Alex sighed as she grabbed a root beer and sat down on the couch in between Lucy and Maggie. Winn smirked knowingly at her from the other couch. She shook her head, she loved him like a brother but she would be damned if anyone other than her, Maggie and Winn himself knew that.

Alex leaned back into the couch, watching her friends. James and Winn were sitting on the opposite couch arguing over some video game, J'onn was sitting in the armchair talking with M’gann. Kara was bouncing around the room chattering away and Lucy was talking with Maggie. She couldn't believe that so many people were in her life now. Three years ago it had only been her and Kara and now she had actual, real friends and the most amazing girlfriend ever.

“Right, Alex?” asked Maggie.

“Huh?” Alex broke out of her thoughts.

Lucy and Maggie both burst into laughter.

“Somewhere far away today are we?” Lucy teased.

“Shut it, Lane.”

This sent Lucy and Maggie into another fit of laughter. This time the rest of the Superfriends stopped talking to watch.

“What are you guys talking about?” asked James.

“Oh, nothing.” replied Maggie. “What are we playing?”

“Oh! I was thinking about Exploding Kittens!” Kara cheered.

Alex leaned back into the comfortable rhythm of the chaos of a game night but something was still itching at the back of her brain.

Comments are always welcome! Chapter title is from Paper Rings by Taylor Swift. Also, feel free to ask any questions - I don't know if I did a great job at explaining context to people outside of my head.
