To say that Vi Kiramman was feeling uncomfortable was putting it lightly. Her tie was tighter than usual, the fabric of her slacks had decided to become itchy instead of their usual softness and having to keep smiling even when all she wanted to do was to lay in bed with Caitlyn was taking its toll on her.
There were more people than she thought there would be, the news about the baby shower had spread like wildfire. She had been happy, knowing that her wife was so loved that the moment people heard that she was celebrating their child’s baby shower they wanted to show up for her. And yet that was one of the problems. She was surrounded by people she barely knew, hearing stories about a world that was not hers and doing her best not to seem out of place.
Her eyes flickered around the room, the softest smile appearing on her lips once she locked eyes with Caitlyn. The woman was talking with one of her childhood friends, the stranger laughing at something her wife said. The redhead wanted to walk towards them but froze once she noticed the gems all over the stranger’s jewellery. That alone made her nervous, the difference of class making her feel like a fish out of water.
She twirled her drink, glancing around to try and find someone to talk to. She was so focused on that that she barely noticed the blue-haired woman approaching. Her wife wrapped her arms around the redhead, burying her nose on her neck and her pregnancy bump snuggled between the both of them.
“Hello darling,” the woman whispered against her skin. “Everything alright?”
Vi instantly melted into her body, her hand raising to caress the woman’s hair. She hummed, not truly answering. “All good. Are you having fun?”
Caitlyn’s jaw clenched for a second before she turned her around in her arms. “You look so handsome tonight, baby.” Her fingers made quick work of her tie, undoing it before tying it again, this time softer than before. She also unbuttoned the first button of her crisp white shirt, making it easier for Vi to breathe. “Thank you for letting everyone come here.”
“You don’t need to thank me, beautiful.”
“Yes I do. This is your home as much as mine. And I know we had planned a tinier party but I had to invite most of these people. I would be strung up to dry if I hadn’t,” she dryly said, her hands cupping the redhead’s cheeks. “I would much rather it had just been family and you, darling.”
“It’s okay, I understand.”
“Maybe in a bit we can ask Mel to entertain the guests while the both of us go upstairs,” the pregnant woman wiggled her eyebrows, making the redhead laugh loudly.
“Are you asking me for a quickie while in the middle of our baby shower?”
“What can I say? You are looking quite delicious today.”
Vi leaned down and left a soft kiss on her wife’s lips. “I love you.”
“I love you too. But is that a no on the scurrying away for a bit?”
“Yes ma’am. Mel would kill me if I stole you away. She told me she has a lot of games and things to do.”
Caitlyn giggled, her arms wrapping around the woman’s neck. “She is so excited to become an aunt, isn’t she?”
“Yeah,” the couple glanced towards their friend, the woman laughing and walking around as the perfect host. “She will be a great Aunt.”
“And an even better babysitter.” Caitlyn winked before waddling towards the couch, her movements clumsier than ever before because of the weight of their baby. The redhead let out a breathless chuckle as she stared at her wife and followed her.
The games were boring for the woman, her chin resting on her hand as she watched people losing their mind over random games but the smile everlasting in her face because of the happiness in the blue-haired woman’s giggles floating around her.
Vi was praying that the baby shower was over when it was time to open the gifts. Her arm was wrapped around her wife’s shoulders, her fingertips drawing random patterns on her shoulder as she saw the gifts being revealed.
There was a mixture of toys for their baby and useful things, from a scent-resistant trash can for the nursery to bottles and diapers for the first few days after the birth. And even Caitlyn got smaller gifts, nursing bras and clothes for when their baby finally joined them. Her smile grew bigger as she saw how truly loved her wife and child were, the people around them trying to do their best to make sure the baby would get everything that was needed.
It wasn’t until Tobias Kiramman’s gift that the redhead felt the same love she was seeing being directed to the blue-haired woman being directed to her. The first package was a small one, a box wrapped in pink paper that once removed revealed a handcrafted wooden box with an intricate design on the top. Vi felt her eyes fill with tears once she realized what it was. She glanced up to her father-in-law and muttered a thank you before running her fingers over the design.
It was the same one that she had custom made for Caitlyn, using it as a detail in a wristwatch she had gifted a few years back. The Kiramman family crest with the added lines of Vi’s own back tattoo stared back at her as her hands shook. The blue-haired woman giggled gently and thanked her father, knowing the tradition of their family that meant they would have to use the box to save some mementos of their child.
The next gift sent the redhead to the brink of openly sobbing. Inside the bag there was a rather small bunny plushy, almost identical to the one Vi had when she was a little girl. Her eyes flickered between the gift, her wife and her father-in-law trying to understand how Tobias knew. Caitlyn smiled widely, leaning down to brush her nose to her wife’s.
“I asked him to buy it for us. Do you like it?”
“I love it, cupcake.” Her voice cracked for a moment, her hands holding the toy like if it was made of cristal.
“I thought it would be a nice gift for our little muffin.” The woman stressed the word and Vi gave her a pained smile. “I know that you think they are all here for me,” she whispered gently, making sure no one could hear them. “But they love you too, darling. Now look at the bunny’s ear.”
“Oh God what did you do?” Vi playfully asked before freezing, a stunned laugh leaving her lips. Muffin was sown into the inside of the bunny’s ear.
“I would’ve written the baby’s name but you two refused to know the gender so I did the next good thing,” Tobias wiggled his eyebrows jokingly before leaving a kiss in his daughter’s hair, and after a moment's hesitation he repeated the action with his daughter-in-law. “So Muffin it was.”
The rest of the baby shower went down in a blink with Vi keeping the bunny in her lap, the way she would play with its ears brought a smile to everyone’s faces. “I love you,” the redhead whispered once the last person left. “With all my heart, cupcake.”
“I love you too, darling. Now c’mon, let’s put everything away.”
Once the table was cleared and the gifts put where they belong, a bunny plushy laying on a crib while waiting for the moment it’s owner finally laid down with it, the couple crawled into their bed and fell asleep almost instantly, Vi’s hand cupping Caitlyn’s belly as they snuggled under the covers.
