Every one of Hawke's closest friends sports some sort of terrible wound that refuses to kill them. Always the injury is more mental and spiritual than physical, because her closest friends must remain potent fighters. Carver has the Blight, the death of family, and the betrayal of the Templar Order. Cullen has the Tower of Magi and the betrayal. And Mettin has more than both of them combined.
Hawke herself remains undamaged. The injuries the world tries to inflict whirl around her like a debris cloud. She wields these shards as weapons, uses them to force her way into power.
