Glass shatters to his right. The noise is bright—sharp. It echoes down the too-quiet hall.
He looks over in time to watch the shards of his empty bottle in their descent, but by the time they clatter to the floor, they are dull again. There is only his heartbeat and his breathing and his father’s voice inside of him, irrevocably.
