Work Text:
Two green eyes stare up at Castiel, pupils dark and wide. The cat's coat is a dark brown, shiny and, Castiel thinks, would be smooth to the touch.
"Hey Cas? Have you-" Sam stops his sentence abruptly upon entering the room, ancient book in hand, footsteps slowing as they come to stand beside the angel. He too is now looking at the cat, taking in its features, its stance. "Is that-"
The cat—Dean meows and stands on his four furry legs. Leaning into his back legs, Dean's butt wiggles before he leaps onto the table beside Castiel. He manages to stick the landing, and Castiel recalls a saying about cats and their feet, but the thought is cut off by Dean meowing once again.
"Yes," Castiel says, turning to look at Sam. "It's Dean." Looking back to the mentioned, Castiel finds that the feline version of Dean is sat once again, tail resting besides him. If his eyes were enchanting before, now they're on a whole other level. Emmerald and bright, Castiel has never seen such beauty. Without thinking, he reaches out to pet Dean, only to stop mere inches away from the top of his head. To his delight, Dean finishes the gesture by bumping his furry head against Castiel's palm.
"Hello," Castiel says, his voice softer and lighter, taking on the tone he often uses for the strays and various animals they come across in their hunts. Dean chirps in response, a deep purr coming from inside his chest. "You don't care for listening to others, do you?"
At this, Dean moves his head to nip at Castiel's hand. When the angel yelps, Dean licks his paw, as if saying yeah, and I'll do it again.
"I'll see if there's anything in this book about reversing a curse. I'm guessing that's how this happened?"
Castiel makes a noise of confirmation. "I told him not to touch the glowing vase," he gestures to it, now on the floor, somehow still intact, "but he doesn't listen."
Sam snorts, nodding his head. "That's Dean all right." He fishes the keys out of his pocket, offering them to Castiel. "I'll be with you in five, gonna see if there's more books that can help us un-catify Dean."
Castiel nods, pockets the keys, and turns on his heel. Expecting Dean to follow him, or stay with Sam, he jumps when there's a sudden wait on his shoulder. Looking up, he finds that Dean has perched himself there, right upon his shoulder. When Castiel opens his mouth to speak, Dean bumps his head against his, that deep, sweet purring returning once again.
"Three weeks?" Castiel is sat at the table in the bunker, Dean perched on his shoulder still. Sam has spent the last couple of hours researching in the library, trying to get answers for how and when Dean will turn back to his human self.
"Three weeks," Sam confirms, placing a bottle of beer in front of Cas. He sits opposite him, placing the book down alongside his own beer. "It's a spell from a coven of witches in the 70s. They operated out of an apartment in a shady part of town. Apparently, according to the lore, there was a series of robberies, or 'cat burglaries', if you will. The head witch cursed the most expensive items to turn anyone who touched it outside the coven into a literal cat. Guess she was a fan of puns."
At this, Dean meows. This one is unlike the ones he's been giving Castiel, sweet and high. This one is angrier, deeper, full of annoyance. It's also met by Castiel taking Dean off his shoulder and placing him in his lap, cupping his fluffy cheeks.
"Well, maybe next time you'll listen," Castiel says, the pads of his thumbs running over his cheeks.
Dean meows again, but seemingly he accepts his predicament. He flops against Castiel, tail curling in on himself. When Castiel runs his fingers over Dean's back, Dean chirps, turns on his back, and shows his stomach to the angel.
Across the table, Sam sighs. He watches as Castiel pets Dean's stomach, the feline version of his brother lapping up the affection, going as far to lick Castiel's hand in an attempt to return the loving gesture. If Sam was sick of them sneaking glances at one another, or sitting closer than needs be on the couch, he's already done with this version of them. As Dean's purrs echo throughout the room, Sam buries himself in the book, desperately steadying the pages. There's no way he can put up with these two for more than a day.
