Chapter 1: prologue - beneath concrete bedsheets

Chapter Text

Nothing is set in stone.

Tell that to the inmates of Curden Cay Station.

We were cast in concrete.

Tell us nothing is set in stone when we can decide for ourselves.

They broke our bones until they healed back in different shapes. They scratched our skin until it hardened into leather. They tore into us until our hearts no longer pumped blood through our bodies, but anger.

They told us the concrete cocoon smothering us was a soft, warm blanket, as poison seeped into our poors, melted us down, and we emerged as something we were not before. We are no longer human, or even conduit.

We are nothing at all, really.
This was no sanctuary.
