Today, I met the boy whose eyes still shined even when rain covered the light.

Thoughts swirled in my head, the street was a little cold the sun was setting already. My hair slightly messy, shirt untucked, and jacket wrinkled. I didn’t care. I just kept walking. I want to get far away from them. They expect me to be perfect, like Mari. Don’t they know that I’m not Mari?

“Why won’t you be like Mari?”

“Why can’t you do this? Mari can.”

“You’re a disgrace. Go to your room.”

Stupid, perfect Mari, perfect smile, perfect behavior, perfect life. I’m not Mari, me and Mari are two different people. I feel anger coming up, but I kept walking. I shouldn’t show anger out in public. I shouldn’t be in public actually.

My surroundings changed from a clean city, to a dirty, poorly dimmed area. How far did I walk to get here? I lost my train of thought when I heard quiet sobs from an alley. Looking over, I saw a boy with messy blond hair, dirt on his clothes, and a bag of newspaper next to him. So he’s a newspaper boy.

Suddenly he looked up and saw me, trying to wipe his tears away. His eyes were the prettiest blue I ever seen. They still shined with kindness and gentleness, even when they are broken. It’s like when the sun shining even when rain and clouds cover its rays.

I started walking over to the boy and sat next to him. His face was dirty like his clothes and had old some cuts and bruises. In response he hid his face and spoke quietly and gently said, “Do you need something?”

For a second I just sat there in silence, then said, “It’s okay to cry.” He looked up at me to make eye contact. His face flushed a bit, probably because of embarrassment.

“Th-thank you.” His voice sounded like it was gonna break and his tears started flowing again. “Uhm…sorry if this sounds rude, but are you okay as well? It just seemed that you looked a little angry at first” I was shocked a bit. How did he know? Even Mari can’t tell my emotions that quickly.

“Did it seem that way? Yea I guess I was angry.” This is so weird, I’m talking to someone I just met so smoothly and I’m being truthful. I can barely hold a conversation with my sister. I don’t wanna think about her right now. I don’t hate her but I’m tired of being expected to be like her.

The boy laughed a bit even with tears in his eyes. It was one of the most beautiful sounds I ever heard. “There was a little flicker in your eyes. It’s okay to be angry…thank you.”

“For what?”

“Thank you…for not judging me…crying was seen as a sign of weakness and I don’t wanna seem weaker than I’m already am. I don’t understand how crying is a weakness though? It is a natural human response.”

I never thought it that way, I thought to myself. He suddenly said, “Ah so-sorry, I didn’t mean to talk that much.”

I just stared at him for a while. What does he mean by that? “Why are you sorry about that?”

“Well, I was told that my voice was pretty annoying and I should shut up.” I was shocked when he said that. His voice was so beautiful, even more than beautiful. Who could tell him that?

“Don’t listen to them. You have a pretty voice.” Well, “pretty” was putting it lightly, but he seemed to smile from that response.

“Tha-thank you! You’re so kind!” Kind? I don’t think that’s a word to describe me. “Sorry if this sounds rude, but why are you here? You don’t seem you live around here.”

“I got angry and snuck out. I guess I didn’t realize how far I went.”

“Really?” The boy said then he looked to the darkening sky then turned to me. “I think you should head home now. It’s getting dark and if your parents realize you’re not home you could get in trouble.”

To be honest, I didn’t really wanna leave. I wanted to stay with him a little longer, but then I realized that he might have to go home too. “I guess you’re right, may I have your name please?”

He looked at me shocked for a second. “It’s Basil, why do you ask?”

Basil. What a pretty name for a pretty boy. “Basil, can you meet me back here next week around the same time?”

“Huh?! Wh-why?”

Why? Well because you seem interesting. I kept that thought in my head though. “Is that a yes or no?”

“Uh well I guess I can.”

I smiled at him then got up to leave. “My name is Sunny by the way. Bye Basil.”

“By-bye Sunny!”

With that, I turned around and started walking back home.
