Back when words for men who were "effeminate" and "unmasculine" in the eyes of society were scarce, many sought to create their own by adding additional meanings to existing words. Thus, words that seemed to fit everyday vocabulary could also be used to describe strange and perhaps "queer" individuals. At least that's what Basil's grandmother said.
"Buttercup", "pansy", "daisy", and of course, "The Horticultural Lad". With many of these words spurring from botanical language, Basil became nervous. For what reason? He wasn't one of them... right? Those men who contract diseases and drop dead like flies months later? Those men who dress up, clad in obnoxious and flashy clothing, speaking in high-pitched voices while gesticulating dramatically?
All Basil did was tend to his flowers, his love of gardening having no correlation to which sex he harbored romantic feelings for. Such things are rubbish...

However, he now realizes that even though he's mostly healed and learned to live his life without so much grief, there are always harsh reminders of what happened with Mari and Basil, no matter if he's in the city or back in the very town where everything took place. He knows he'll have to understand more than the truth to fully be able to accept what happened.
