Work Text:
Davey glances toward the lens, then toward Austin, who is deliberately staring out the opposite window. Davey gestures subtly between them. “You see how the camera is facing us? We look like a divorced couple.”
Austin doesn’t move at first. He keeps staring out the window like he’s contemplating his life choices. “Huh?”
Davey tilts his head. “We’re both crossing our arms and each of us is looking away. He looks left, I look right.”
Austin finally flicks his eyes toward the camera and then back to the window, nodding once. “And we’re both talking to ourselves.”
Penny slowly turns around in her seat to look at them, eyes wide with mock devastation. “I’m the unwanted child.”
Davey drops the act instantly, leaning forward in alarm. “Your mother wants you!”
Austin straightens too, defensive for no reason whatsoever. “Your father wants you.”
Penny gasps and presses a hand to her chest like she’s been emotionally scarred. Davey points at Austin without uncrossing his arms, shaking his head solemnly.
“Dad’s not responsible,” Davey said, “so don’t go with him.”
Austin’s eyebrows were raised in the challenge. “Let’s fight for custody.”
Penny narrows her eyes thoughtfully, tapping her chin as if weighing the options. “Depends on who I pick.”
Davey immediately sits up straighter. “I can cook.”
“I can eat.” Austin shrugs lazily, completely unbothered.
Davey breaks first, laughing so hard he has to uncross his arms and lean forward.
“See? That’s the useless man of the family.” The van fills with laughter after. Even the driver glances back briefly, shaking their head.
Penny turns around again, satisfied, while Davey and Austin continue muttering playful insults under their breath.
