One Way, or Another

Summary:

Megumi gets an unexpected call from an old friend. Too bad Yuji isn’t calling for small talk.

My first multi-chapter fic! Short chapters…but a win is a win!

Notes:

I realized as I was writing this fic that I have two other unfinished fics that provide some exposition for this one. But this was finished first so instead of a soft launch you’re getting thrown in!

Megumi is 43 y/o.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

It was a lazy Sunday afternoon, not long after Hana returned from mass. The previously-steaming rice had already been thoroughly shoveled into greedy little mouths, and those same greedy mouths were now sitting on the tatami living room floor scolding their favorite cartoon. It was August and the heat had been unbearable, so a fan rotated slowly between the kitchen and the living room. After lunch, Hana had retired to her room to change from her Sunday Best, and now only Megumi sat reclined at the kitchen table in a stiff chair, observing the three children.

The oldest,14-year-old Inari, was the calmest of the bunch, and despite lacking the enthusiasm of his siblings, he watched the show with a focused intensity.

Miyu was the only girl, and well aware of it even at the tender age of four. At this moment, as in all things, she was following her brother’s example. And right now, she and 9-year-old Jiei were taunting the TV in a manner unheard of in any Zen’in house for hundreds of generations past.

Megumi smiled. He hadn’t been in an environment this lively since…well, since his school days. And now it was his daily life. In the past he would have claimed to hate the noise, but now…

Now he found it to be a good distraction.

His phone vibrated, sending jarring shivers up his spine from the pocket he kept it in. He always made sure each contact had a different pattern, and this one he was quite familiar with.

Just not typically on Sundays.

He pulled the phone out of his pocket and answered it tentatively.

“Hello?”

The other end crackled.

“Hey, Megumi.”

“Yuji? Why are you…? You haven’t been-“

“I can answer those questions later, but right now I need you to come to Jujutsu Tech.”

“Right now?” Megumi stood and crossed the room towards the door to the master bedroom, looking in to find Hana. “What’s going on?”

She was standing in the room, veil clutched in her hand. He put the phone to his shoulder to speak to her. “It’s Yuji. I’m heading to Jujutsu Tech.” He put the phone back to his ear as she responded.

“What? What’s going on?” Her eyes were wide and concerned. Megumi relayed to her what the voice in his ear told him.

“They found Sukuna’s reincarnation.”
