The glow from the streetlamps lights him up subtly, making his hair look closer to peach than to the bubblegum pink Megumi knows it to be. Megumi Fushiguro never stood a chance in life. His mother died when he was five, his father abused and neglected him, and he has never felt right in his own mind or body. The only two people who have ever cared about him are his sister Tsumiki and his mother's childhood friend Satoru Gojo. Gojo is the only person in his life that has ever been like a parent to him. He practically raised Megumi and his sister and was always there when they needed him. Meugmi is slow to trust and love, but holds his family and his two best friends very close to his chest. But now, at the beginning of his sophomore year of high school, Tsumiki has gone away to college and his conflicting emotions about one of his friends have thrown him for a loop. But still, Gojo is there. He doesn't leave and remains an ever constant persence in Megumi's life, which he is eternally grateful for. But sometimes, it's not enough to silence the voices in his head, however much Gojo tries.

Making a move when Mister Cute-Ass Nice-Hair keeps all of Yuuji’s brain cells ricocheting around like they're trapped inside a pinball machine is difficult. Especially if he actually wants to be smooth about it and not just shout down the street after him like a lunatic.
It's probably not meant to be. Star-crossed lovers with rockin' asses and all that.

Megumi can no longer sleep alone. The darkness that comes with the shift from evening to night makes him nauseous, especially if he’s on his own.
His first night back on campus has quickly turned into a disaster. His room, blackened by shadows that turned the walls to ink, felt far too familiar for his taste; a pitch-black void of nothingness to surround him as he remained confined inside his own body.
Itadori found him collapsed on his bedroom floor, trembling.
“I know, I know,” he murmured as he ran a comforting hand down Megumi’s back. “He always makes it too dark.”

Summary
They won’t let him run away, they won’t let him die, so this is the next best option, the next best way to relieve the hurt.
Speaking of, Megumi is especially pressed about not letting him die. Yuji thinks it’s stupid, Megumi doesn’t get to think that he can die but Yuji has to stay alive. He’s the one who called Mahoraga and sacrificed himself, why can’t Yuji do essentially the same?
or. Yuji can't cope with Shibuya, Megumi pulls him out of the darkness that threatens to consume him whole. It works.
