Work Text:

 “Hey guys, remember Rocky Dangerbuff?”.

Up until Jay had said that, all the ninja had been lounging around in the deck, but now they’re lifting their heads up and facing Jay, who’s sitting on the couch and scrolling on his phone.

“Oh, don’t bring that up.” Cole groans.

“Don’t listen to him Jay.” Kai grins “Zane, how much do you remember about it?”.

“It's very well documented in my memory banks. Would you like to hear it recounted?”.

Everyone except Cole voices their approval loudly.

“You know, Cole should sing more. He actually did a very good job with that kid’s song he karaoke’d.”.

“Nope! Not happening, I embarrassed myself like crazy.”.

“I mean, it basically worked out, didn't it? The Sons Of Garmadon were defeated, and your musical talents were a part of that.” Jay brings up.

Cole reconsiders. “Well, when you put it that way…”.

Jay gets a sinister glint in his eye.

“Oh no, I know that look, you’re gonna do something stupid, aren’t you?” Cole accuses.

Jay raises his hands into the air. “I wouldn’t say stupid, more like…” He pauses, trying to find the precise analogy/other communicative device. “Ugh, whatever, just wait a sec.”. He runs out of the room.

“Place your bets now, folks,” Nya drawls, jokingly waving around a coin “is he coming back with A) A karaoke machine he randomly bought a while ago, B) A kazoo that he will play terribly, or C) A-”.

 “GOT IT!”.

Jay slides into the room holding a large opaque tupperware.

“So is that a kazoo?” Cole snarks.

“What? No, kazoos are lame. This-” Jay holds up the box “is a box of microphones.”.

“When did you get those?” Lloyd asks.

“That's irrelevant. What is relevant is that we're going to bring out Cole's musical talents.”. He shoots him a very targeted smile, which Cole (fondly)rolls his eyes to.

Jay opens the box and pulls out a mic. He offers it to Cole exaggeratedly, and Cole snatches it up.

“Ugh. You reeaally wanna make me sing? I think that's a war crime.”.

“You know what, for the sake of equality we'll all go eventually. But you, choirboy, you get the honor of going first.” Jay concedes.

Cole groans. He takes a deep breath, before launching into a very passionate cover of I Want It That Way. He's hamming it up, voice hitting notes he hasn't gotten anywhere close to in years. Zane begins to appropriately dance, triggering a phase of everyone else dancing.

It's glorious, but their collective commitment to the bit is no match for the laughter that dismantles them eventually. Cole thumps the table hard enough that it breaks.

“We/re gonna have to replace that, you know.” Jay says between guffaws.

 “Yeah, yeah.”.
