Tears I Cry are Bittersweet

Summary:

"𝘔𝘢𝘺𝘣𝘦 𝘐 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥'𝘷𝘦 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶" he sighed, with a resigned expression marking his delicate features.

Kirishima laughed until his stomach hurt, until his eyes were full of tears, until he couldn't breathe.

"𝘈 𝘣𝘪𝘵 𝘵𝘰𝘰 𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘪𝘴𝘯'𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘣𝘳𝘰?"

Bakugou took another sip of his drink, his face unreadable.
"𝘔𝘺 𝘭𝘶𝘤𝘬."

He replied, joining his laughter.

Chapter 1: Last time we talked

Chapter Text

Kirishima Eijiro believed he was a lucky man.

With a faint smile on his face he sat in the bar with his best friend by his side, and a drink in his hand.

"Your best man speech." He said, breaking the comfortable silence shared between the two of them.

Katsuki's scarlet eyes looked up from his glass of whiskey, in which a spherical piece of ice floated, and offered him a questioning look.

"It was beautiful, man. It was so deep! I can tell you took your time to write it."

The look on the blonde's face eased a fraction, something only Eijiro's merlot eyes could catch. He looked back into his glass and scoffed.

"What, were you expecting something less from me? Everything I do is good." He replied, before taking a swig from his drink.

"I mean, I never knew you were in touch with your emotions so much. Or emotions in general. Guess therapy worked out for you!" He giggled, dodging the light punch Katsuki tried to plant on his shoulders.

"Oh piss off! If that's the case then you shouldn't have made me your best man in the first place!" He grumbled.

"Only the best man in my life can be the best man of my wedding Katsuki! And you are my Brokugo!"

"Tch. Oh please, I can name 10 people in this room itself who could have been better alternatives!"

"There are like- thirty people in this party! What is that one fourth? But you know what? Humor me."

"What? No, it's one third, dumbass??" He deadpanned, and put a finger up.

"Izuku would have written the most perfect speech for you and would even speak about everytime you ever hung out together since highschool. In detail."

Sixteen year old Katsuki would have eaten himself like an oroborous before even remotely appreciating a thing about Izuku, or even call him by his first name, and it always warmed the red head's heart everytime he saw a testimony of how much Katsuki had improved.

(Not that Katsuki was ever bad, he was just different. But Eijirou chose to admire his manliness then, and he sure does admire it now. Katsuki might have changed, but Eijirou's admiration hasn't. And it never will.)

"He would've bawled his eyes out and flooded the entire banquet before even speaking legible words."

"Ugh fair. But-" he put another finger up "Icy hot would definitely say something awkward and have all your sisters and cousins swoon over him even more."

Eijirou brought his raspberry martini to his lips tugged with a smile.

"Hello, I'm Shotou. I hate my dad. I wish you had Soba. Please don't fight. Thank you." Kirishima said, putting his glass on his right eye to imitate the said boy with horrible accuracy. "And FYI, my cousins swoon over you too."

A ghost of a smile played on Katsuki's lips, whose mouth had been in his usual resting pout for the entirety of his reception.

"Freakily accurate. Kaminari though-"

"Ugh you're still going on?"

"Hey, you're the one who asked me to!"

"Kaminari huh..."

Kirishima wondered for a while, then shook his head.

"No man it had to be you."

"The hell is that supposed to mean." Bakugou scowled.

"You're my best friend dude, I've had fantasies about us being significant roles in each others' weddings since highschool."

Katsuki's brows furrowed.

"I mean, most of our class is dating one another. It's about time you find someone too, so that I can be the best man in your wedding soon."

Katsuki's face did a quantum leap and he looked like he tasted something more bitter than the whiskey in his hand.

"My best man probably would've been Izuku, I'd rather have him crying over my banquet hall than-" he took another sip of his booze before sighing.

"Not like I plan on ever getting married."

"If this is some bullshit about you thinking no one likes you, then I beg your pardon-" Bakugou's eyes widened at hearing him get defensive, but he kept quite, for once.

"-But you're one of the most beautiful men I know. Your fangirls would die for you to look at them, let alone date them! I can't let you shit yourself like that."

Katsuki sighed in response again.

"Because they don't know me." He spoke quietly, his usually aggressive voice diffusing into something too calm.

"What?"

"It's amazing to think about dating Dynamight. 'The one who destroyed AFO, the UA salutitorian, looks kinda decent if it weren't for that big scar on his face'. But Katsuki is just insufferable. He's still just a pomeranian with temper of the Hulk."

"If you think that the scar is ugly then you've probably never opened Twitter if it wasn't to make controversial opinions. It's the proof of a battle you won Katsuki. A proof that you're the manliest man I know." He put a hand over the other's shoulder with practiced ease. "And I know you don't I? I know Katsuki is a kind man with an unbreakable spirit and fire in his eyes. I know Katsuki Bakugo is the man who learnt a new language for fun when he was being treated in the hospital. Katsuki, you're not an extension of Dynamight. He is an extension of you. And I admire you both equally."

Katsuki decided to meet his eyes with a defeated look.

"Maybe I should've just married you." He sighed, with a resigned expression marking his delicate features.

At the rare sound of humor from his friend, Kirishima laughed until his stomach hurt, until his eyes were full of tears, until he couldn't breathe.

"A bit too late for that now isn't it bro?"

The ruby ring on his finger reflected the dim light of the bar, probably to make itself more visible.

Bakugou took another sip of his drink, his face unreadable.

"My luck."

He replied, joining his laughter.

"You sure you can go home, blasty?" Mina Ashido -no- Mina Kirishima asked him for the fifth time.

"I told you Ochaco will drive me home pink cheeks! Just-" he awkwardly gave the girl a side hug. "Congratulations."

"Aww boom boy, thank you! You better not be getting emotional right now though. You'll see your friend happy everyday on patrol!" She returned a much less awkward hug, being someone actually in touch with her emotions. Katsuki replied by messing up her curly hair and running to the exit.

"You should escort him to his car, make sure Ochako is in the car before leaving." Mina said, watching him look for the mentioned girl's husband, who was currently on the dance floor.

Kirishima nodded dutifully, already following the blond.

"Bakubro how are still sober?" Kirishima asked, following the boy to the parking.

"I don't know, I'm quarter Russian, tolerance is probably genetic." He shrugged, kicking a rock on the way.

"Ah yes, you and your superior Russian genes." The redhead laughed, walking behind him.

In the next second, Bakugou paused, and they both bump into each other.

"Watch where you go, shitty hair!" Katsuki grumbled under his breath.

""What do you mean I-" his eyes went up to the Porche right in front of him and only then had he hit the realisation that they had arrived at the spot where they were supposed to part for the day.

It is safe to say that Kirishima's surprise was not lessened when Bakugou pulled him into a tight hug.

When he finally let go is when Kirishima realised how close they were.

Close enough that he could see the remnants of smudged eyeliner on his face.

Close enough to see the mole under his scarlet eye.

Close enough to smell his quirk which reminded him of caramel.

Close enough to-

"I have a flight tomorrow, they said they needed me in Tokyo for a while so..."

Oh.

Oh.

Kirishima leaned out of his touch noticeably, and Katsuki took his keys out, understanding.

"Well, don't be a stranger! Uh- call me and visit us anytime."

Us.

It sat weird on his tongue. He'll get used to it.

"I'm happy for you." Katsuki said, finally.

"Don't be a stranger." Kirishima repeated, finally too, as he saw Ochako approaching the car.

They didn't wave each other goodbye, but it was between them, with ease.
