Work Text:
Miu was typing up the latest report for the detective agency when a pounding on the door startled her. Not bothering to take off her reading glasses, she quickly stood up and strode to the door.
“What do you want, Sos—Saki??”
“Oh good, it’s an emergency,” Saki said, moving past Miu into the house. Miu noticed that she had bags in her hands.
“What?”
Saki whirled around, looking both excited and anxious.
“I got chosen to pick the seasonal cake! But I have to come up with something by—are you wearing glasses??”
“Yes?”
“That is so cute! Anyways, I need to borrow your kitchen, since you guys actually have an oven.”
“Right. Do you need any ingredients, then?” Miu asked, her brain already adjusting to the news. “And congratulations!”
“Thanks! And lemme see what you have.”
“Alright.” Miu followed Saki into the kitchen, a place that Saki had borrowed before. “Did you have any ideas?”
“I was thinking something with our colors, but you’re kinda diff—Earl Grey! That’d work!” Saki gasped as she saw the tea Hiroto must have left out. “Can’t believe I didn’t think of that...guess ‘cause you’re silver and not gray!”
“You can make a cake from Earl Grey?”
“Yup! But it’s tea colored, so the frosting is going to have to be silver, but that works out fine. Do you have lemons?”
“Um...I think so?” Miu didn’t want to admit she rarely knew what was actually available in the kitchen.
“Okay, I’ll need to make a lemon curd, too. That’ll be better than just lemon cake. Forgot we had an Earl Grey cake about two years ago now, so it’ll seem nice and new, but that one was lavender.”
That sounded good to Miu, but Saki was wrinkling her nose.
“Anyways! Here’s the Earl Grey, so let me get started with the milk…”
“Is there anything I can do to help?”
“Yeah! You guys get really good eggs so if you could get out 6 of them, and lemons, and some milk.”
“Got it.”
Saki started getting out the ingredients she had brought with her, moving to get out bowls with a confidence Miu could replicate anywhere but the kitchen.
“This is the nice stuff,” Saki said admiringly about the Earl Grey, measuring it out before putting it in the milk she had poured.
“Do you want it for the shop…?”
“Can I? That’d be great! Then we don’t have to buy any.”
“Take as much as you’d like.”
“Well, let me make sure it tastes okay first!”
She efficiently made cake batter that Miu wanted to taste test, then made a curd that was so lemony that Miu could feel it in her teeth before Saki gave her a small taste test.
“That’s going in the cake??”
“Well, I can’t assemble the full cake today, since I’m making the curd right now, but once it’s chilled!”
“And the frosting?”
“I got food coloring. Help me come up with patterns?”
“Okay.”
Practicing on plates, they came up with a silver frosting that had little wheels of yellow.
