Professional ice hockey player Shane Hollander of the Ottawa Centaurs has sparked a divide amongst ice hockey fans on Twitter, after interacting positively with a piece of fanmade “ship art” depicting him and former teammate Hayden Pike of the Montreal Metros [🔗].
Hollander was drafted to the Metros in 2009, and left in 2021 for the Centaurs after a dramatic series of events involving a leaked FanMail video of him and his now husband, Centaurs’ Captain Ilya Rozanov. Although the general consensus is that Hollander’s time with the Metros ended on a sour note, he has publicly continued his friendship with Hayden Pike and his family, which has given some of the more dedicated “shippers” more than enough reason to continue speculating about the true nature of their relationship.
What is RPF? RPF (Real Person Fiction) refers to the genre of fan content that involves writing/drawing celebrities or other real people in fictional—usually romantic—scenarios. While RPF thrived in the early 2010s with notable pairings such as Phan (Daniel Howell and Phil Lester, British YouTubers) and Larry Stylinson (Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles, One Direction) dominating the internet, it has recently become somewhat of a taboo as fandom continues to grow and change with the times.
The main thing to know about RPF is that it’s all a guessing game. Are Shane Hollander and Hayden Pike—both married, by the way—in a secret relationship? Are they “co-parenting” the four Pike children as one user suggests in their post? Or are they just friends, happy and secure in their respective relationships? For some people, the not-knowing and endless room for speculation is only part of the appeal.
