Work Text:

I see people mischaracterize my goat Parrot, so I needed to do an analysis.
It's easy to get Parrot's character wrong because he's extremely complicated
If you underestimate him even just a little or don't dig into his psyche enough you probably won't understand his actions. Tw for heavy topics like mental health and suicidal tendances.

Parrot has a lot wrong with him. He has a savior complex, he’s self-sacrificial, he shows signs of being passively suicidal, he heavily blames himself for his friend’s deaths and most importantly he is a character defined by loss. Despite Parrot’s black and white views, he does genuinely have a good heart. He’s a good person who has been described multiple times as trustworthy and nice. Parrot does genuinely want to help people, especially those who have nothing. Though he does bad things and justifies it because he has good intentions. For a good part of Parrots POV, he embodies the quote “the ends justifies the means.” This is something we see Parrot embody a lot. It’s “okay” because he’s doing bad things to help people. And it’s not like he has ulterior motives about this either, he helps people because he genuinely wants to. He doesn't brag about helping people and more often than not he puts himself in danger to help other people. This ties into his self-sacrificial behavior, we also see that despite it not being explicitly shown, Parrot displays little regard for his own life even though unstable is a hardcore server and dying once means you're banned. A prime example of this is when he and Theo were arguing and Parrot confirmed that he could die but it would be worth it if he succeeded to which Theo says, "have you always been like this and i just haven’t noticed it??” And he has, it’s subtle at first and you don't really think much of it but time and time again he had no problem throwing away his life if it meant he could help someone. He gladly puts his life in danger simply because he feels he needs to even if he doesn't want to die. Parrot also puts himself second, while it may not look like it, Parrot constantly puts helping the server over himself. It’s almost like he doesn’t have anything personal to himself, nothing he truly wanted solely for him. The secret Spoke promised at the beginning. To help the server. All those treasure hunts i.e.: Clown’s vault, the mafia tomb and other places. Solely for helping other players who have nothing. I think the most tragic part is the fact that the one thing he wanted for himself, to have his best friend Wifies back, ended with his death and the blood staining Parrot's hands. The death msg showed that Parrot blew up Wifies, a silent msg of how it's his fault Wifies is dead. And Parrot seems to internalize everything as his fault, sometimes it is, other times it's a fault of the situation. Yet he internalizes it and feels guilt as if it were his own. 99% of his friends died because of him, it would always be his fault, it's why he's so desperate to help people. His friends would have died for nothing if he didn’t do these things, their life to extend his would have been meaningless if he didn't compensate for it. He is a bird trapped in a cage of his emotions. He is willing to do everything he can to protect people he cares about because of his false sense of responsibility. Parrot feels responsible for everything that goes wrong up to the director arc; placing no blame on Leo (+ bat) despite the fact that Leo up to this point had tried to kill him and has betrayed him in a way at least twice. Parrot, whether you want to believe it or not, is a very forgiving character. We can see this primarily with Spoke as Spoke is someone who has done more harm to parrot than good, from chunk banning Wifies to messing with him during the director arc despite how serious Parrot sounded. Yet Parrot seeing his state after losing Mapicc was able to sympathize with him because he too was once in that situation. Yes, Parrot acts annoying and hypocritical but no one really talks about his development from that. Most of the analysis I've seen feature all his negative traits but not how he grows, Parrot is the type of character to reflect on his actions and apologize when he realizes he was wrong, he does this with Wemmbu, Flame, and basically with Marlow by not taking anything from the tomb. He realized he was wrong about them and became more open-minded. Parrot isn’t as bad as people make him out to be, his character is simply that complex to think about. This also ties into how Parrot reacts when faced with his friends' deaths. While at first it may seem like Parrot doesn't care, often sounding very unaffected, it's not true. Parrot doesn’t react strongly to these things, instead he shuts down, he gets quiet and avoidant about the topic. This is especially true for Wifies, despite Parrot saying he would tell people about the old Wifies when asked, he instead avoids the topic all together if he can. Wifies damaged Parrot in a way no one else could, he changed the way Parrot thought about things on a psychological level. Wifies had been his companion through everything, every single death of his friends (besides Boomie and Spectacle) he was there to comfort Parrot when he had no one else, he faced death with him and Wifies sacrificed himself for Parrot on numerous occasions just as Parrot has done the same thing for him. In short terms Eggchan was Wemmbu’s Wifies but Wifies wasn’t Parrots Eggchan. Wifies wasn’t exactly healthy for Parrot, Wifies didn’t really argue back with Parrot and never forced him to really think back on his actions unlike Theo. Wifies was an enabler, he followed Parrot and at some points encouraged his behavior with his compliance. I think Parrot adapted some of Wifies’s character traits, of course he’d still retain his kindness, but his thought process changed to match Wifies. Wifies was smarter than Parrot as quoted by Parrot himself, Parrots tend to copy their “owners.” Wifies didn’t own Parrot but more so invaded his consciousness after his death, more specifically, Wifies is a character who haunts the narrative. He hadn’t been dead at the beginning, but people notice his loss of place next to Parrot, and for Parrot, Wifies’s mannerisms and thought process have affected him fundamentally. We can see this when Parrot reveals Wemmbu’s identity, remember, Parrot only actually went after his identity because Flame promised him, he’d tell him the location of the mafia tomb. All the traps he prepared were to drain Wemmbu’s resources so Flame could fight him. Parrot mirrored Wifies because Wifies thought of this plan, it worked on Parrot, so it was obviously going to work on Wemmbu. Afterwards though Parrot does seem regretful of his actions showing that unlike a lot of peoples thought process he isn’t some cruel and unforgivable person who deserves to die. (yes, I’ve heard comments like that) This also ties into the fact that parrot is an unreliable narrator, the definition of an unreliable narrator is: a storyteller—usually in the first person—whose credibility is compromised, providing an inaccurate, biased, or distorted account of events. They may deceive readers, be mentally unstable, or lack crucial knowledge, forcing the audience to question the narrative's truth. We see this in Parrots videos as he often lacks the truth about those he proclaims as “evil” or “unjust”. He also almost never gives any hint about his emotions even to the viewer; he comes off as uncaring or unempathetic which we know isn’t true given that Parrot’s character is very emotion driven and that he empathizes with the players at spawn and feels bad for those that have nothing. The most emotion we really see him express is when Skype died, it's almost jarring to hear him like that because Parrot almost never sounds like that. It’s a constant facade and he can never truly be open to people because of past betrayals. I find it ironic because Parrot’s character comes off as trusting, he may be on guard at first but eventually he allows himself to depend on people because as much as Parrot tried to act independent, he’s not, he’s incredibly reliant on people but he also tried to push people away when they don't see his side. Cough cough self-sabotage, very much I’ll leave before they can hurt me vibes. But we see this when Parrot is at spawn and he meets Theo. Parrot is initially very hesitant and sees Theo as a potential threat, but when Theo allows him the space to decide what he wants to do, Parrot begins trusting him. Parrot is a character haunted by death and tragedy; he lives not for himself but a purpose that doesn't reap many rewards on an anarchy server. He is good natured in a world that is shades of gray, initially hesitant to hurt or threaten innocent players; we see this gestation begin to fade away. Not because Parrot is no longer kind, but because he's growing used to fighting and beginning to understand that sometimes it is a necessary thing to do to get what you want. He’s not a hero, nor a villain, he’s just the most morally sound character out of the protagonist.

Ps. I forgot to add this earlier, and I don’t even know where I would add it but for all the hate Parrot gets, quite a few character like him, his reputation on the server is immaculate, and he got Wemmbu and Spoke to listen to his morals which is crazy considering they mostly only listen to Mapicc and Egg. Do you know how good of a person you have to be to have those two actually somewhat listen to you.

Anyways, that's the end of my analysis, I might make more when I actually finish unstable. If you wanna know something funny, I actually haven't watched all of Parrots videos, I've only watched like a handful here and there, this entire analysis came from reading other analysis and watching a shit ton of edits of parrot and watching some of his videos <3 Also a friendly reminder that this is simply my thoughts on his character, I may be wrong in some areas because I haven't finished his POV. Also, if this breaks Parrots boundaries, please tell me and I’ll immediately revise it, I don't want to break any boundaries in my writings
