Ragh's Heartache

Summary:

Ragh thinks his best friend is the greatest; why else would he feel butterflies in his stomach when he sees him or dream about him constantly?

(Bingo prompt: unrequited love)

Work Text:

Dayne’s smile is dazzling, and Ragh’s heart skips a beat whenever he sees it. He wonders if this is how best friends feel; he’s never had a best friend until meeting Dayne, after all.

When Dayne puts his arm around Ragh’s shoulders, Ragh feels a tingle all over his body; it feels so good, and Ragh again thinks that maybe this is because he’s his best friend and they have a special ‘best friend’ bond. He tries to touch Dayne as much as possible so he can feel that wonderful tingle, that electric zing that heats up his face.

He dreams of Dayne constantly. They’re confusing dreams, and a lot of times they’re wearing very little or no clothing and are searching for something together; a father, a connection. Dayne’s a centaur with a magnificent horn coming out of his head and Ragh so desperately wants to touch that horn, but he knows he shouldn’t without asking, and he can never bring himself to ask. But Dayne asks Ragh to ride his back and Ragh does so exuberantly, hopping on and happily wrapping his arms around Dayne’s solid abs.

At the insistence of those uppity freshmen, Ragh goes to talk to the new counselor about his feelings and dreams; he’s in love with his best friend, and that’s completely OK. Jawbone tells him there’s nothing wrong or any reason to be ashamed of being gay, and Ragh feels a sense of relief, a weight lifted off his shoulders that he never realized was there. He has a lot to think about.

He still dreams of Dayne, but now that he understands his feelings he finds them a lot less confusing. He still feels that electricity when Dayne claps him on the shoulder, his heart still skips a beat when Dayne smiles at him, but at least he understands now. Now, he just needs to work up his nerves. And he knows exactly when.

It’s prom, and Dayne looks super hot in his tuxedo. He’s arrived with Penelope, but Ragh knows that once they have a talk, Dayne will see the light. They’re best friends, after all. He knows Dayne is busy, getting prepared to be crowned Prom King, after all (oh, how Ragh wishes he could be crowned up there beside him), but he pulls him aside to have a quick talk.

Dayne looks harried, as if he’d been in a fight, but he allows Ragh to speak with him. And Ragh spills it all, confesses how great Dayne makes him feel, how much he wants to feel his lips against his own, how he wants to be by his side instead of stupid Penelope Everpetal. Dayne understands, doesn't he? Because they’re best friends, after all.

“Ew, get away from me, you faggot!” he growls, rearing back and socking Ragh in the face. He storms off, searching for his date, and Ragh stands there, gobsmacked.

It was all wrong; this wasn’t how it was supposed to play out. Dayne was supposed to understand and accept him; after all, he’s great, and someone great wouldn’t do this to their best friend. Ragh slinks away into a corner, stealing a glance over his shoulder at Dayne who leans over and whispers something to Penelope. They both laugh, and Ragh knows exactly why.

And the worst part is that Ragh still loves him.
