Summary
During the Barry the Chopper Incident, all Ed had been able to think was "I'm going to die.". Afterwards, healing from his cuts and sitting with Al, he'd realized how important it was to stay with Al, no matter what. The thought of leaving his baby brother behind, trapped in armor, was something that tore at his very being. And being a state alchemist, he needed a backup plan- a failsafe.
What do you do when your body is about to be killed? You use the kill switch and throw your soul into your brother's armor. Easier said than done, but nothing two alchemy prodigies can't handle. It was only supposed to be the backup plan that they'd never need to use if everything went right.
Only everything goes wrong shockingly often in the military, and neither Ed nor Alphonse expected the team to have to fish Ed's apparently dead body out of the river after a case gone wrong.
