Did Jason ever plan on being a father? No, he certainly did not, especially after all the shit he's been through. He always thought anything related to kids just wasn't in the cards for him. So imagine his surprise when he found out he got his girlfriend pregnant after coming back to Gotham City as the new crime lord Red Hood.
Okay, you and Jason didn't find out about the pregnancy until the whole thing with Bruce and Joker was over with. Hell, not even until you started showing a little -all the symptoms you had before was just waved off with some excuse- that was when you decided to take a test.
At first, Jason wanted to push you away...
He stared at you for a long while without uttering a single word -it honestly made you super worried- then he bluntly said, "Get out."
The response shocked you but also made you angry. He was kicking you out when this was also the consequences of his actions too! You clench your fists by your side, "Are you fucking kidding me, Jason?" You didn't bother to fight with him. If he wanted to be a coward and run away then you won't waste your breath, even though you really should lash out at him.
You turn around and start to walk away.
However, he knew it was a stupid thing to do...
A rough hand quickly grasps your wrist before you can go too far, "Wait, that's not what I want," Jason murmurs and gives your wrist a gentle squeeze, "The news just surprised me, and I said that without thinking..."
You hesitate for a few moments before glancing over your shoulder to look at him. His eyes stayed glued to his hand around your wrist.
"I'm not the best person for any of this," He quietly mumbles, "You would be better off with someone else, but..." His eyes meet yours with a look of determination and nerves swirling in his blue and green eyes, "...I'm too selfish to let you go," He takes a step closer to you, "And I would do anything for you. If that means raising an unexpected child together then I'll do it"
Since then, Jason made sure to be prepared for when the baby arrives. Any chance he got, he would read parenting books -even during down times on patrol he would still be reading off his phone. You and he went out to buy baby supplies then he took an entire day to set up a nursery in the apartment -he just had to move all the vigilante stuff into the corner of your closet.
He definitely didn't want anyone in his... family -for a lack of better term- to know about the pregnancy, but since you were close with them, they found out and it caused him to reluctantly reconcile with them -reconciling with Bruce was probably the hardest thing Jason has done, but he would rather his child know about their family then let it cause problems later on in life.
"When were you planning on telling us, Red Hood?" Dick asks while grabbing the collar of a thug then punching him in the jaw.
Jason takes aim with his gun then headshots an incoming thug with a rubber bullet -had to switch to it due to the deal he has with Bruce, no killing inside Gotham- "Never," He responds as he shoots another thug in the head.
A bit surprised to hear this, Dick looks at Jason in shock, "Really? You were seriously never going to tell us?" He crosses his arms in annoyance, "If it wasn't for (NickName), none of us would ever know about our nibling." He swears getting any information about Jason's personal life feels like having to pull teeth, but he can't exactly fault him though after everything.
"You can thank her for the information," Jason is crouched in front of some unconscious thugs and ties them then stands up, "The Gender Reveal party is next month. Spread the word," Then he grapples out of the alleyway.
Once hearing about the party, Bruce insisted on having it at Wayne Manor and eventually you and Jason agreed to it.
The party is, well... as small as it can be with both yours and his family. There were chaos and love as people chatted, ate food, listened to music, and placed friendly bets on what gender is the baby.
Eventually everyone gathered around outside in the backyard for the big reveal.
Jason and you stand behind a white cake -you two didn't want to be a couple with a big, messy reveal- dressed in the colors of what you think the gender is. Jason is wearing a pink shirt and, since you couldn't really decide, you were wearing a blue and pink flowy dress.
He carefully holds the knife in one hand and yours in the other. Jason never thought he would be standing right here at this moment. God, he can't stop the big grin on his face from spreading, it's hurting his cheeks.
You meet his gaze and whisper, "Are you ready to find out the answer, Jase?" You gently squeeze his hand in excitement.
Taking a deep breath, he nods his head, "Yeah, I've been ready for a while," He steadies the knife then slowly cuts open the cake.
When Jason saw the inside of the cake, his breath caught in his throat. It's blue, a boy, he's having a son.
You wrap your arms around his waist in a tight embrace, and his arm holds you close to his chest. This party certainly made the whole pregnancy feel so much more real to him and he couldn't be happier about it. Well, maybe he can once the baby arrives.
Everyone cheers and congratulates the expecting couple. Jason isn't really all for PDA, but he couldn't help himself from kissing you.
The closer the due date got, the more nervous Jason was. Don't get him wrong, he's ready for his son, but he just can't help the nerves.
What if he's too messed up to be a father? What if he somehow accidentally hurts his son? What if he can't provide a good, stable life for his son? There are just so many ways he can mess this up.
The day his son was born changed Jason for the better. It was so sudden, they didn't have time to go to the hospital, you ended up having your son inside the Batcave.
Alfred was the one who delivered your son and Jason never left your side for a single moment during the whole thing.
You lie back against the pillows inside the med bay area of the Batcave. There was a bit of complications during the birth, but luckily everything ended up fine. You're fine and the baby is fine.
Closing your eyes, you intend to rest with your son in your arms, but Jason has been sitting at a distance like a silent protector with his eyes watching both of your every move.
"Jason," You quietly call out to him and catch his attention, "Come here please."
He doesn't hesitate to move closer to you, "Is there anything you need?" His fingers gently push back some of your hair sticking to your forehead, "Water? More pillows? Anything you need, I'll get it."
You hold your son out toward him, "You want to hold him?" A soft smile graces your lips to help settle any nerves he may be feeling.
His eyes land on his sleeping bundle of joy in your arms then back at you before carefully taking him from your arms.
His son was so small in his arms, he's never seen anything like it before. How can something so small and adorable possibly have the same DNA as someone like Jason?
When the baby opened his eyes, Jason couldn't believe the colors. A left blue eye and a right green eye, just like the pair he got from the Lazarus Pit, stares back at him.
He didn't notice when the tears started welling up in his eyes or when they started to slowly roll down the sides of his face, but he doesn't care when he holds his son closer to his chest, his heart.
Jason loves his little family more than anything. He loves you and your son, Maxwell James Todd.
