Work Text:
You were Maxwell's favorite parent; he wanted to be with you every second of the day. Anytime you would leave the room without him, he would start to loudly cry until you held him in your arms.
Jason was a bit jealous at times, but he understands where it's coming from; if he could, he would also be with you every second of the day. Maxwell definitely got his constant need to be with you from his Dada.
This is how your day starts.
Waking up in bed, Jason is curled up by your side, one of his arms wrapped around your waist while the other one is tucked under his pillow. Getting out of his hold takes some time, but you manage to get out eventually with a few grumbles and quiet complaints from him.
You quickly check your sleeping baby in his bassinet before quietly making your way out of the room to use the bathroom. Since Maxwell hit the nine-month-old mark, he's been quite clingy due to his separation anxiety. You and Jason have been trying to give him the trust and confidence that you'll always be right back, but it hasn't been working so far.
The morning is the only time you get to have some moments to yourself before your boys wake up and cling to you -something you look forward to. During this time, it gives you a chance to think about things like what plans do you have for the rest of the day or the what ifs about your life.
After the bathroom, you walk back into your room and check on Maxwell once again to see if he's awake. If he is, you gently pick him up and take him into the living room with you. If not, you let him sleep. Today he's already awake.
"Good morning, Max," You whisper low enough for him to hear, "How did you sleep?" You already know the answer to that question, he woke up a few times for different reasons, but the number of times he does that in the middle of the night has been decreasing.
Carefully taking Max into your arms, you continue the whisper conversation with him while walking into the living room, "Today, I was thinking we can go visit Grampa, he's basically been begging to spend some time with you."
And that's not an exaggeration; Bruce has texted you almost every day to know when you and Jason will bring Max over. Today is his lucky day.
Maxwell quietly babbles like he's trying to answer back and snuggles closer to you. The sight of it just makes you want to squeeze him tighter.
You set him down in his highchair then walked into the kitchen to grab some yogurt from the fridge. As you were doing this, his eyes never once wandered away from you. It's the only way he knows to make sure you're still here.
A pair of arms wraps around you from behind when you grab a spoon from the cutlery drawer. You already know who it is as you lean back against his chest.
"You left me all alone in bed..." Jason grumbles against the side of your neck, "Why didn't you wake me...?"
A soft smile grows on your face as you turn your head a little to look at him, "Because you had a busy night and wanted you to sleep in," You kiss his cheek, "Also, you look adorable when you're asleep."
Meanwhile, your sweet baby loses sight of you the moment Jason steps in front of you and starts to cry out for you.
Jason lets go of you and backs away to let you console your son, "I know how you feel, buddy..." He murmurs with a soft look on his face.
You scoop Max up into your arms, "I'm still here, sweets," His crying calms down as you bounce him in your arms.
"I bet the crying is making you hungry," Jason says as he moves closer with a spoon and a cup of yogurt, "Open up," He scoops some yogurt onto the spoon then carefully feeds him.
It's always an amazing day at the Wayne Manor whenever Maxwell is over because the moment you and Jason settle down, every member will take your baby away to bond and have fun. How did some of them get here when they were across Gotham or even in another city so fast is beyond you.
But even with your family surrounding Max and keeping him company, he still has an eye on you to make sure you're still there.
Damian holds Maxwell in his lap while Dick makes funny faces to get him to laugh. Cassandra stands nearby and carefully pokes his squishy cheeks like she has never seen anything like him before.
Duke sits on the opposite end of the couch from Damian as he watches the scene, "Man, he's the perfect combination of you two," He looks back and forth between you two and your son, "He's got Jason's eyes and your hair..." His hand rubs the back of his neck as he adds a final comment, "I know that's how genetics work, but I've never seen it work so perfectly like this."
Damian leans forward a little to look over Maxwell's features. He doesn't admit this out loud, but it's adorable how much Max looks like you -and Todd too or whatever.
You watch over the scene for a bit longer before you start slowly walking backward toward the bathroom, making sure you keep an eye on your baby with every step you take. But once you almost make it out the door, Maxwell starts loudly crying.
The four around him almost practically jumps in surprise and immediately tries their best to calm him down.
Jason glances over at you with a look saying he'll handle it then quickly walks over and takes Max into his arms, "It's okay, Max," He sways with him from side to side soothingly, "Mama is coming back. She'll be standing right here with us before you know it."
His soft whispers and gentle swaying calms Max's crying to just a quiet sob.
Seeing that surprises you a little, it was only ever just you able to calm him down like this, however now it looks like Jason can as well. He always quietly doubts himself, but he's such an amazing father.
Everyone knows you can never leave Maxwell's side, so whenever something needs to be done, Jason was usually the one doing it.
Until today...
The three of you lie in your bed together -you and Jason acting like protective barriers on both sides of Maxwell. You were playing with him when he started to get a little fussy.
"Our poor baby..." You murmur with a pout, "Teething pains are awful," Your eyes glance up to meet with Jason's as you ask, "Can you get the teething ring please?" You stick one finger in Maxwell's mouth and gently massage his gums to soothe him.
Jason quietly nods his head and stands up, "I'll be quick," Then he heads to the door.
But something surprising happens, Maxwell starts to cry as his tiny hand reaches out to him. It's obvious to tell he needs his papa with him.
How can Jason leave the room now? He quickly turns around and immediately scoops his baby boy into his arms, "You want to stay with me...?" He snuggles closer, his lips brushing the crown of Maxwell's head, "I'm here with you, Max."
You take this moment of distraction to sneak out of the room and grab the teething ring without another cry from Maxwell.
Well, guess Maxwell doesn't actually have a favorite parent. Somehow you two manage to go backwards, you were supposed to build this trust in him that you'll always come back to him, but now he just needs you two with him 24/7. He's a clingy baby and definitely got that from Jason.
