Work Text:
The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon when Leon finally turned onto your street, the sky painted in muted amber and fading rose. It cast everything in a warm glow that made the quiet neighborhood look deceptively peaceful. After the day he’d had, he almost resented how calm it all seemed.
Meetings, endless briefings, paperwork that stacked higher than it had any right to. These days, exhaustion didn’t hit him like it used to. It didn’t come in sharp waves anymore. It settled slowly, deeply, like sediment at the bottom of a glass. He carried it in the set of his shoulders, in the faint crease between his brows, in the way he exhaled before unlocking the front door.
He stepped inside, shutting it gently behind him.
“I’m home.”
Nothing.
Usually, you answered. Even if it was distracted. Even if it was muffled through a door. A soft “Welcome back,” or music playing upstairs, or the sound of you moving around. There was always something. Tonight, there was nothing.
The shift in him was immediate and subtle all at once. The fatigue dissolved. His posture straightened, senses sharpening in a way that had nothing to do with conscious thought. His gaze swept the living room. The couch was untouched, the coffee table undisturbed, there were no signs of forced entry, no broken glass, no splintered wood. Still, his jaw tightened.
Just what the hell is happening?
The air didn’t feel wrong, but he had learned a long time ago that danger did not always announce itself loudly. Leon stepped further inside and called your name, louder this time. His jaw tightened even more when he didn’t hear a single sound still. The kitchen was empty, and the back door locked. The windows were also secure. He checked the hallway closet without thinking, a reflex he never quite lost. It was clear. By the time he reached the stairs, a familiar unease had begun to coil low in his chest. He hated how fast his mind could spiral. One unanswered call and suddenly he was calculating possibilities he didn’t want to name.
He took the steps two at a time. Halfway down the upstairs hall, something caught his eye near the bathroom. There were light strands of hair clinging to the tile, almost white against the darker floor. A pair of scissors rested on the sink counter just inside the open door. A dye box lay discarded nearby, its contents already used. The faint chemical scent of bleach lingered in the air. For a split second, his heart dropped before logic caught up. He stepped into the bathroom, taking in the scene. The cuts were clean, no signs of a struggle, no overturned furniture, no broken fixtures. Just hair, bleach, and black dye. This was intentional, Leon thought. He exhaled slowly through his nose to ground himself before calling your name again, more controlled now, but there was an edge he could not quite smooth out. His gaze shifted to your shared bedroom door at the end of the hall. He approached it carefully, the quiet almost oppressive now, his hand hovering near the handle.
And then it turned from the inside. The door opened on its own, and he stopped. You stepped out, and for a moment, Leon did not process what he was seeing. Your hair was shorter. Not a trim, it was noticeably shorter. It framed your face now instead of cascading down your back. Soft bangs brushed near your brows, shifting the way your eyes were emphasized. And beneath the sleek black top layer, stark white peeked through. When you moved, the white flashed like a secret only visible in motion. Black and white. Like an Oreo.
The hallway light caught the contrast, sharp against your skin, and it was so different from the long hair he had grown used to seeing that his breath hitched before he could stop it. Relief came first. It loosened something tight in his chest that he had not even realized had locked up. You were fine. You were standing right in front of him, unhurt. Then confusion flickered across his features before it withdrew to something softer
“You scared me,” he admitted quietly. His voice was rough, still recovering from adrenaline he hadn’t wanted to feel.
Your expression faltered slightly. “Sorry,” you said automatically, then hesitated. “I was doing…something.”
“I noticed,” he muttered, glancing once at the trail of evidence in the hallway.
His eyes returned to you, slower now, taking it in properly. He didn’t discern anything out of the blue, just the nervous look on your face, like you were bracing yourself for his reaction. He said your name again, but this time it was less alarmed.
“You cut it,” he added, almost to himself.
You reached up instinctively, fingers grazing the ends. “Is it bad?” The way you asked it, small but trying not to sound small, made something soften in his chest. He stepped closer instead of answering right away.
Up close, the contrast was even more striking. The black was sleek and smooth, falling neatly around your face. When you shifted, the white underneath curved along the ends slightly. It changed you in a way that felt intentional and thought out. He lifted his hand slowly, giving you time to pull away if you wanted. His fingers brushed the ends first, then his thumb grazed the edge of your bangs, adjusting one slightly where it rested against your brow. You watched him like you were waiting for a verdict.
“You had it long for a while,” he muttered, remembering the way it used to fall over your shoulders, the way it would get caught in his jacket zipper sometimes, the way he would absentmindedly tuck it behind your ear. This was different but not wrong.
“It suits you,” Leon said finally with a tone that was honest, low, and certain.
Your shoulders dropped, tension dissolving instantly. “Really?”
“Yeah.” His hand slid beneath the top layer gently, lifting a few of the white strands between his fingers. He looked at you then. Not just your hair. You. “You look really fucking beautiful, baby.”
He admired the younger edge, the quiet confidence, the willingness to change something just because you wanted to. Something he wished he had back in the day and even now, in that moment.
The relief that bloomed across your face was immediate and bright. It made you look lighter somehow.
“You’re not just saying that?” you pressed.
“If I didn’t like it, you’d know,” he said dryly.
That made you laugh softly. He traced his thumb gently along your temple, down to your cheek. “Next time,” he added, thumb brushing your cheek again, “just text me before you go radio silent with scissors and bleach involved.”
Your lips curved. “You thought something happened.”
He didn’t answer, but that was answer enough.
Your hands slid up around his neck gently. “I didn’t mean to worry you,” you murmured. “I was cleaning up before you got back. I lost track of time.”
Leon let out a quiet exhale, leaning his forehead briefly against yours. “I know.” You kissed him softly just once, light and reassuring. His hands moved to your waist, thumbs brushing over the oversized hoodie you were wearing, the one he absolutely recognized as his.
“Is this mine?” he asked, though he already knew.
“Finders keepers.”
He huffed a quiet laugh. “Unbelievable.”
You grinned at him, and he felt that tightness in his chest fully unravel.
He tilted his head slightly, studying you again. “You look…” He hesitated, searching for the right word.
“Cool?” you offered hopefully.
He squinted at you. “I was going to say stunning.”
“Oh.”
He leaned in, voice lowering teasingly. “But yeah. Cool too.”
You rolled your eyes. “You were about to say something else earlier.”
He smirked faintly. “I tried to say cunt. It didn’t go well.” You visibly recoiled and shook your head in disbelief.
“Hello? What!?”
“It’s the shit you say, no?,” he said, amused. You were still smiling when he slid his hands more securely around your waist and lifted you slightly off the floor.
“Leon!” you yelped, laughter spilling out of you.
He kissed you again, firmer this time but still sweet, still warm. “Let me admire my girl properly,” he murmured against your lips. You wrapped your legs loosely around his waist as he carried you into the bedroom, shutting the door behind him with his foot. He set you down gently at the edge of the bed and brushed his fingers through your hair once more, like he still couldn’t quite believe it.
“Yeah,” he murmured, softer now. “I like this.”
You reached up, running your fingers through his hair in return. “Good.”
The world outside could stay complicated, but the weight he carried could sit a little lighter tonight because right now, it was just you and the way you were looking at him like he’d hung the moon, and the way he couldn’t stop smiling back.
