Michael’s dark eyes flicked toward her, just the faintest quirk at the corner of his mouth suggesting amusement. “Wicked, you say?” he repeated softly, almost as if testing the word, gauging her reaction. “I find it curious that you would expect wickedness in a man whose only offense, by your account, is attentiveness.”
Kate’s lip curled in a mix of exasperation and teasing challenge. “Attentiveness,” she echoed, her voice dripping with mock disdain. “Attentiveness is all very well when it is courteous. When it is innocuous. But the man I spoke to in the garden, the man I met at the ball behind a mask… he had fire. He had audacity. He had a wicked gleam that made one question one’s propriety and composure simultaneously. You are far too tame, sir. I am disappointed.”
