Chapter Text
Sunny saw red. He had always been the type to get frustrated, but this wasn’t just that. It was rage. “Do you know how hard I’ve worked for this?” He tried to process what Mari was saying with reason, but it just got blurred together with rage. Rage for the sores and scratches on his hands. Rage over his grades dropping due to his devotion to the violin. Rage over never getting any time for himself and his friends. Rage for not being able to just… Just be a kid! “SUNNY! Are you even listening?!?” Mari was speaking to him, but it was just sounds. His vision began to blur with static. He had to leave. He began taking a step towards the stairs, but he was blocked by Mari’s foot. Sunny felt his body begin to fall while he stood, watching his small body tumble. He saw Mari grab his hand, only to be brought down by him, falling alongside him. His vision reconnected with his body abruptly as he felt his bones being crushed, blood trickling down from his nose. Everything began to fill with static. Everything except the voice of Mari. “I’m sorry, Sunny. I-I love you...” Her words were interrupted by sobs as she wrapped her injured arms around his growing limp body. He heard sobs, followed by a ringing in his ears. As he began to tune in and out of consciousness, everything began to go dark.
Sunny woke up. She was in a dark car seat, the car unmoving. Shouldn’t he be in the hospital...? The car smelled like his mom. Maybe he was on his way. But then, where was Mari? He looked down at himself. These weren't the clothes he was wearing. “...Mom…? Where are… we…” He said, swallowing down his nervousness. Now was not the time to cry. He heard his mom sigh, followed by a short laugh. “We are going to go for a little vacation, just the two of us. “ What? None of this made sense. Maybe he was dreaming. Or maybe he died, and this is some weird version of hell. “Hey, Sunny, could you do me a really big favor?” She asked, her voice low. Sunny couldn’t see anything; darkness and dizziness overwhelmed him more than confusion. In fact, confusion seemed to be second nature right now; he was just trying to stay lucid. “Next to you, there should be some paper and pens. Mari’s probably pretty sad that you’re leaving, but it’s okay. Just write something.”
Sunny turned his head. Sure enough, there was a notepad along with a pen. He stared at it for a second before picking it up. Before he could put the pen to the paper, his mom interrupted. “Just write what I say, okay, dear?” Sunny hummed in agreement. “Sorry. I love you, Mari. Goodbye.” Sunny whispered the words as he wrote them out, voice almost childlike. He ripped it from the notepad and displayed it to his mom proudly. She promptly took it, laughing with tears. Something about this wasn’t right. But Sunny was too tired to care. “I’ll be right back. I’m just going to do something really quickly.”
He looked outside as his mom walked towards a bridge over water, putting a pair of shoes on the edge. Strange, those were his shoes. Whatever. He let himself doze off as the embrace of sleep gently took him away.
Mari yawned, comfortably tucked into her hospital bed. It had been a week since the injury. Sunny had it the worst, suffering a concussion, so she chose to stay longer until he recovered. The hospital was kind enough to allow her to sleep in his room, so she could be there when he awoke. The moon shone through the curtains as she looked over at Sunny, an IV beside him as he rested peacefully. He looked so serene. She wanted, more than anything, for him to know how much she loved him. That would need to wait, for now. She was exhausted. Sitting in a hospital room all day was surprisingly tiring. She sighed, turning over and falling asleep.
A chill ran down her spine.
Her friends would be visiting this morning.
Everything would be okay
