Work Text:

The two boys ran around the playground, giggling as the two moms laughed together on the green bench.

Will had tripped onto the grass with a “oof” as Mike immediately went to his knees to help his bestfriend.

“Will?!” Mike says. Will blinks softly. “I’m okay.” Will smiles. Mike stares dumbfounded. “But—you fell!” Mike exclaims. “But I’m okay.” Will says softly.

Mike blinks, nodding carefully. “I do have a scratch, though.” Will says. “Let me see.” Mike says. Will nods, sitting onto the grass as he puts his legs out.

His knees all red and scratched with little dirt pieces across a big cut on his left knee. Mike gasps, frowning at the sight. “It kinda hurts.” Will says, tears forming in his eyes as his breath hitches.

Mike immediately acts, shushing the small boy. “Will! It’s okay.” Mike says softly, rubbing up and down Will’s thigh above his long gray shorts.

Mike didnt know how to exactly comfort his bestfriend. He just had done what his mom had always done for him. Circles on his back and thighs to comfort him when he sobbed.

“Does it hurt anywhere else?” Mike asks. Will nods, pointing to his wrist where it becomes flushed around the palm. “Oh no!” Mike gasps.

“Mike seriously, I’m okay!” Will frowns. Mike scoffs silly. “No! Your hurt.” Mike says, taking Will’s hand and placing a kiss on it.

Will stares. “Mike?” He asks. “Does it feel better?” Mike asks. Will thinks for a moment, nodding. “Good. That’s what mom always does for me when I’m hurt.” Mike smiles. Will giggles, the tears disappearing from his glossy eyes.

Mike sweeps the dirt off of Will’s knee, reaching down to place a kiss to his bestfriends knee aswell. “Mike!” The two boys hear as Mike turns around to see Karen and Joyce jogging to them.

“What mom?” Mike says, rolling his eyes. “What are you doing?” Karen says, crossing her arms. “Will fell, so I’m making him feel better. Like you do.” Mike shrugs.

Joyce picks Will up onto his feet, dusting him off. “Are we in trouble?” Will asks shakily. Joyce chuckles softly, shaking his head. “No—no..” Karen says.

“Just we got worried, is all.” Joyce says. “You guys just can’t kiss eachother.” Karen adds. “But he’s my friend—my best friend.” Mike frowns.

Karen laughs softly. “I mean, what’s hurting them?” She shrugs. Joyce thinks for a minute, then nods in agreement.

“You boys can go play—just be safe!” Joyce smiles as her and Karen walk back to the bench. Mike and Will look at each other before running off back to the swings.

After awhile, the two boys get called to go home. Mike frowns as Karen tells him to hurry up and to put his shoes on.

“Five more minutes? Come on, mom! It’s Will.” Mike groans. Karen chuckles softly. “Will and Joyce have to get home for dinner, and we have to bring Holly home.” Karen says as he holds onto Holly’s stroller.

Mike turns to Will as Will frowns, pulling his best friend into a hug. The two boys hug as they let go. “Bye Mike.” Will says, waving. “Bye Will!” Mike giggles before skipping off.

But suddenly, the raven headed boy stops, leaving Joyce and Will in confusion.

“I almost forgot!” Mike says before running back to Will.

Mike places a kiss on Will’s flushed cheeks. Will giggles as he returns the favor, placing a wet kiss on Mike’s nose.

Joyce stands in awe as Karen looks at her with a smile on her face. “Bye now!” Mike says before running back to the red minivan that Karen had owned.

“Bye Mike!!” Will says before walking off with Joyce to go home.

It was a feeling the two boys couldn’t explain—no one would get, but only Mike and Will would. It was unconditional love the boys would endure for years, in the best way possible.
