Work Text:
The summer went by quickly for one Yusuke Kitagawa. Being occupied with one’s boyfriend does that to you. She had met him on the beach while getting some food and life had been pretty much perfect since that day. However, even though they had both grown so fond of each other over the past few months, they both knew it would all have to end when summer ended. This was a measured risk they both agreed to when they first started dating. But the closer that the day came, the more she realized that she didn’t want it to be over. Maybe she could bring up long distance? But as she sat next to Akechi at the beach, she found herself at a loss for words.
“Is anything the matter, my love?” Akechi frowned as he said it. He had noticed the shift in Yusuke’s mood. His sunscreen not being fully applied and smudged around his face made the conversation that Yusuke wanted to have ten times harder. How could she possibly bring up long distance when her boyfriend looked so cute and oh so content to be in the moment? “No. Nothing is the matter.” Akechi frowned again. He reached his hand out and grabbed Yusuke’s hand gently. “Well, if you’re not going to talk, there’s something I wanted to bring up.” Yusuke’s heart dropped at the words. She knew where this conversation was headed and she didn’t like it. Akechi would break up with her and then she would be heartbroken forever. Doomed to paint the face of her lost lover for the rest of her life without ever actually seeing him again. She needed to end this before Akechi could. “Actually I have something I want to say!” Yusuke blurted out. Akechi’s eyes widened at the sudden outburst. “Okay…go on then.”
“I…think we should break up,” Yusuke paused to look at Akechi's face, which was now full of sorrow. “I think it’s for the best. We don’t have much time left together anyways. And as much as I enjoy sketching you and being with you, this will only end in heartbreak for the both of us. I hope you understand.” Yusuke searched Akechi’s facial expression, which was now cold and closed off. “Fine. I understand,” Akechi said. He slowly got up and began gathering his things. “I’ll drive you back to your hotel now.” Yusuke felt her heart drop. What had she expected? For Akechi to fight against it? He clearly wasn’t affected by this breakup. Maybe he wasn’t the right person for her after all. After all, wouldn’t the right person fight for her? “No need. I’ll have my mother come get me.” Yusuke was fighting tears now. This wasn’t what she wanted to happen. What about long distance? But Akechi was already walking back to his car and not looking back.
---
Akechi started crying as soon as he got in his car. He had held it together until he reached his car which was an accomplishment in and of itself. This wasn’t how the day was supposed to go. He was supposed to surprise Yusuke by telling her that he wanted to try long distance, even if it was hard. Even if it meant never seeing her in person again, he had wanted to at least try. But it didn’t matter now. Yusuke would go home in a week and Akechi would never have to come to this cursed beach ever again. As soon as Akechi started his car and drove off, he had a gut feeling that he shouldn’t have left Yusuke on the beach alone. Despite his better judgment, he kept driving. Yusuke didn’t need him anymore. Yusuke didn’t want him anymore. Akechi knew he needed support in times like this but he was scared to tell his friends about what had happened. He had been so certain that Yusuke was the one. But he was wrong again. He was always wrong. Nobody ever loved him and nobody ever would. He was an undesirable child and now he was an even less desirable person.
Pulling over, he pulled out his phone and dialed the first person he could think of. A few rings and then finally he picked up. “Akechi? What’s up? I thought you were with Yusuke?” Ren’s voice immediately soothed Akechi. His best friend’s voice always managed to calm him. Yusuke’s voice did too. Tears started flowing again at the thought that he would never hear Yusuke’s beautiful voice again. “Seriously, dude, what’s wrong? I can hear you crying.” Akechi composed himself slightly. “Sorry. Can I come to your place in about five minutes?” Ren sighed into the phone. “Sure but Futaba and Ryuji are both here too. Is that okay?” Akechi nodded, as if Ren could see him. Strangely it seemed to work. “Okay. See you in five. Drive safe.” Akechi breathed a sigh of relief. He would soon be reunited with his friends. His T-Birds. The only people he could count on.
