Work Text:
Edgar is, well, an “Edgar,” a stereotypical wannabe gangster, every type of phobic (especially homophobic) hangs out with his own kind. But somewhere in his green eyes lies a boy who yearns, and yearns hard. Lucas is a skater. Lucas usually skates after school, alone. Lucas usually spends lunch alone, until. Edgar and some of his friends come to Lucas and snicker about his fashion. At the same time, Lucas had baggy black jeans and a plain grey shirt. Edgar had his gray sweatpants sagging (as always) and a Nike Tech jacket. Edgar and his “gang” came up to Lucas' drawing. “Yo dude, what are those clothes!” One of Edgar’s goons snickered. But Edgar stayed silent, completely amazed by the way Lucas’ eyes glistened in the sun. “Edgar, you good man?” One of the shorter Nike tech consumers asked. “Yeah, man, it’s just something I’ve been thinking about,” Edgar said, a half-truth; the thing he was thinking about was the skater in front of him. “Guys, let's go,” Edgar commanded as he started walking away, still pondering on that kid. Lucas shrugged it off, it’s normal in life, he thought to himself, still drawing a skateboard.
In his next class after lunch, Edgar thought about what he was feeling. In his family, that feeling is pushed away, the feeling of affection towards a man. That kind of love is looked down upon in his world; it shouldn’t exist. Edgar pushed the feeling away. He wouldn’t think about that skater boy. In Lucas' class, he was thinking the same thing. Lucas had a blush coloring his face; he shouldn’t like a kid like Edgar, they don’t match, they shouldn’t match. But why does he feel like this? One of his classmates asked him, “Ooooh—who’s the special person?” Wondering why Lucas was blushing. “It’s no one…” Lucas slowly said. “So why you blushin’?” Another classmate asked. “It’s no one!” Lucas said quickly as the teacher walked past, and classmates, also as quickly as Lucas spoke, went back to doing their work. Over the past few days, they kept seeing each other. At every corner, every hallway, every day. One day after school, Lucas was skating. He always did this, but this time, he’s missing tricks he would usually do easily. So he sat down and started drawing. He was listening to music. Then, when the rough sketch was done—it was Edgar?! He tried to erase it quickly, but his eraser ran out of ink. Leaving him with a slightly more opaque sketch. The next week, Lucas mustered up some courage and tried to talk with Edgar.
So one afternoon, after the people from the halls scattered and the building noise died down, Lucas stayed in the bathroom, notebook in one hand, pencil in the other. He heard the door creak open and then a soft sigh. Lucas turned to find Edgar, his cheeks burned up not from shame but a quiet longing he wouldn’t admit aloud. After some awkward silence, Edgar spoke first, “I—I came to think that maybe… maybe I’m not—not supposed to feel this way.” Edgar’s voice wavered, either from fear or from something more hopeful.
Lucas didn’t rush; instead, he stepped closer—a careful, planned step between care and boundary. Then, with care, Lucas steadily placed a palm on Edgar’s back. Almost instinctively, Edgar wrapped his arms around Lucas. This hug spoke of safety, not lust, and of two boys finding affection that they thought was forbidden. The type that was hushed. The type that was “evil”. Both boys relaxed, letting the sweet embrace cushion them. For a moment that seemed to be so long but so short. Both processed the current emotions that they had just allowed. One, they hid for so long. When the hug broke, they stayed apart, their eyes looked around everything but each other. Lucas spoke first, “Uh, are we a thing now?” Almost automatically, Edgar uttered the words Lucas hoped for, “Yes.” Lucas waved goodbye, and so did Edgar. Edgar went out first, then followed Lucas.
Lucas went home after the ordeal with Edgar. Lucas ate his dinner as normal, but… something was different. His mind was whirling with thoughts of Edgar and him in the bathroom, hugging. “We just hugged.” Lucas thought to himself, it was just a simple hug… right? Lucas started doodling in his room again, but thoughts of Edgar were still invading his drawings. Every doodle reminded Lucas of Edgar. So Lucas just started drawing Edgar… shamelessly, I would say. First drawing, nothing out of the ordinary. But then… Lucas drew Edgar—shirtless, might I add. Lucas is in the flow state of drawing, not realizing he had drawn his partner without a shirt. So, in a moment of surprise, he closed the notebook. With a flushed face, Lucas hurried to the bathroom and poured his face into the sink with cold water. After some time, Lucas went out and face-planting onto his bed, eventually fell asleep.
Lucas woke up to the sound of his alarm clock. He jumped out of bed—then ran to his dinner table. Finally, he got on his skateboard and went to school. Edgar was leaning against a wall, waiting for Lucas, as usual. Lucas—out of breath—asked Edgar, “Hope you weren’t waiting long!” Edgar nodded and proceeded to say, “No, I wasn’t waiting long.” Lucas sat down next to Edgar’s leg. Edgar also did the same. Lucas then nuzzled against the crook of Edgar’s neck—feeling the warmth of Edgar. Lucas took in a whiff of the fresh cologne and the sweat Edgar had, commenting on it, “Mmmm, you smell good…” Edgar smiled and responded, “You too…” The sun was beating down on the entrance of the school, lighting up the rusted bars. The soft and creamy skin of Edgar was addictive to Lucas. As well as the many students' audible conversations could be heard.
When the bell rang, all of the student body rushed in, filling the halls with laughter, sadness, etc. Lucas and Edgar parted ways for now. Lucas rushed to his first class, P.E. Lucas really never liked P.E, mostly because of it being his first class. During P.E., Lucas was heavily sweating, so in the locker room, he put on deodorant and a lot of cologne. Lucas’ next class was art, and he loved it. I mean… drawing is his passion. So after art was English, Lucas was fine with it; the teacher was neither strict nor careless. Work was mediocre but still challenging; it was “eh.” Then there was chemistry; Lucas had the same opinion about it as English. After was math; Lucas absolutely hated it; not only was it boring, but also hard. Then there was history; plain boring for Lucas. Finally was world languages, Lucas was “meh” with it…
After school, Edgar was waiting for Lucas. Shortly after, Lucas came running into the warm embrace of Edgar. Lucas and Edgar walked towards the skate park to talk and have fun. When they arrived there, hand in hand, Lucas tried to show off to Edgar. Failing miserably… But then Edgar offered a hand, and when Lucas looked up, he saw—beauty. Lucas zoned out when he made eye contact with Edgar’s eyes. The way the sun gleams against his green eyes. The smell of his distant cologne. The way the leaves blew and ruffled against the concrete. The baggy grey clothes and how they are just the perfect size for Edgar. The dryness of his throat. Lucas knew everything about Edgar was perfect. Still in a daze, Lucas unconsciously said, "Pretty…” Then Lucas shook his head and grabbed the soft hand of Edgar, pulling himself up. Lucas and Edgar then started talking about their hobbies. Ending their session was the sunset, casting a shadow over them. Lucas and Edgar walked their respective paths towards their homes. Knowing that their relationship will bloom.
