Work Text:

A blur of images flashed through Matthew's mind, almost like a daze that scattered around like an unnerving fog. Dreams came and went, each more random than the last but none of that mattered because he likely wouldn't remember it in the morning. Peace flooded his mind, as it typically does when you're unconscious and sleeping. Matthew felt like his body was floating, like maybe the world was truly comforting him for once.

This soothing state was interrupted by the jolting noise of his phone ringing. Matthew was a light sleeper, so this sound ultimately made him practically jump out of bed. He fumbled for his glasses on the nightstand a few inches away from him, his hand tapping against the surface until he put them on.

Matthew simply pressed accept without looking at who the caller was, his mind was far too used to the depths of unconscious bliss to care at this moment.

"Ah, Привет! Matevy, you finally answered! What took you so long Дорогой?" The sound of Ivan's voice rang through the call, sounding cheerful for someone who just abruptly woke another up.

"Ivan...?" A murmur escaped Matthew's lips, "It's... 2 in the morning." His head barely lifting up from his pillow to mumble out.

"Приносим извинения. It's 13:00 in Moscow. I forgot you Canadians are 11 hours behind us."

Ivan chuckled from his end. Truth be told he didn't forget, he just simply didn't care. This occurrence happened once a week, but it was always Ivan ruining sleep - Matthew knew what kind of person Ivan was when he was sleep-deprived so he avoided retaliating at all costs.

"I-I see... is there..-" He yawned, "-Any reason you're calling me at this hour?... Surely you have a good reason eh?..."

Matthew are you trying to convince yourself or us? Because neither is working. Matthew's voice was quiet as always, even more so now because the man was so exhausted.

"Я скучал по тебе." Ivan stated, declaring it casually.

Matthew's eyes slowly blinked, "Ami, you know I don't speak Russian.... and I am very tired." Matthew tried pleading, "Can you repeat that in english? Please?"

"Just checking in on you." Ivan's smile could be heard from the phone, but Matthew had a feeling that translation wasn't completely accurate but decided to let it go for tonight.

"... Ivan." Matthew sighed into his pillow, trying his hardest to be nice. "That's...awfully nice of you but... couldn't this have waited till morning?" He asked gently, Matthew's face still only slightly lifted from his pillow.

"Нет." Ivan's tone was stubborn. He really was like a giant child, always refusing to share and was incredibly possessive over what he deemed to be his.

"... I see." Matthew wanted to chuckle but couldn't find the energy for it. "I'll leave my window unlocked, then."

"Замечательный! I'll be there soon, Matevy!" Ivan hummed cheerfully, quite pleased that Matthew had gotten so used to his antics.

"Soon? It's a 20 hour flight from Moscow to here..." Matthew raised an eyebrow through the phone.

"Да, but I already left hours ago!"

Ivan had left Moscow yesterday in the early early morning, he didn't tell Matthew about this detail until now because it wasn't that important.

"T-then... I'll see you... soon."

a soft smile played on Matthew's lips. Most people would've found Ivan's behavior to be borderline stalkerish and even creepy at most points. Although Matthew saw it completely, it somehow made him feel safer weirdly enough.

"Mn. See you soon, Моя любовь." Ivan's voice carrying gently through the phone.

Matthew's expression turned a little confused for a moment, "What was that last part again?" He asked, genuinely curious on what Ivan sad.

"Nothing important, Matevy." He smiled, "Go to sleep, for I will be with you when you wake." Ivan's voice was like butter, almost addicting to listen to especially at this hour.

Matthew nodded even though he was on call and couldn't be seen. "I will. I'll make us pancakes when you get here, eh?" Matthew's smile softened as it grew.

A small pause, "... Delicous. I cannot wait." Ivan didn't even really like pancakes all that much. But Matthew did, so who was he to deny food from him?

"Goodnight Ivan."

"Спокойной ночи, Matevy."
