Chapter 1: The Letter

Chapter Text

Megumi woke up to the sound of a knock on his door. It was only 5:20 AM on a Saturday, Who could possibly be knocking at this ungodly hour? Megumi thought. He really didn’t want to open the door but he got up and did so anyway. In the doorway was Gojo. Gojo was holding a note that looked like a love-note. “Megumi-kunnnn~ I found this letter that was written to you! Though there’s no name written… I guess you will have to find out who’s your secret admirer! Or maybe I’ll find out myself?~” Gojo spoke in a cheery voice. He sounded way too happy for this early in the morning. It ticked Megumi off. Megumi wasn’t all too thrilled to be getting a love letter, and from an anonymous person. “Ugh… Gojo-Sensei, how do you have this much energy at this time…? Also I don’t care who sent it. It's probably that Hana girl I met when I was little.” Megumi growled. He glanced at the letter before looking back up at his teacher. Gojo bent down to reach Megumi’s eye-level and handed him the letter. He had this smug smirk on his face as he looked down at the shorter man. “Oh by the way… With finding out who it is… I was kidding about finding it out. Because I already know who it was who sent the letter. And no, it was not Hana.” Gojo saying that made Megumi pause; If it wasn’t Hana… Then who could have possibly been the one to send it? It couldn’t be Mai or Maki because those are his cousins… Nobara would never write a letter to either him or Yuji… He doesn’t know the students from the Kyoto School that well so it couldn’t possibly be them. And it most DEFINITELY couldn’t be Panda since—he’s a panda and all. Megumi let out a loud sigh and grabbed onto the door handle. “Would you leave my room now? I don’t want to hear your annoying voice this early in the morning.” Megumi said. “You’re no fun, Megumi.” Gojo said disappointedly before Megumi slammed the door on his face.  Megumi walked back to his bed and laid back down. He just wanted to go back to sleep. But he was already awake so there was really no point in trying to fall back asleep when he’d have to wake up in a few hours anyway. Instead he just stared at the picture on his desktop. It was a picture of him, Nobara and Yuji. He always forgot he put it there. It felt so… odd. The picture was a time when the 3 of them hadn’t experienced the horrors of being a Jujutsu Sorcerer. Megumi wished they could go back to that time. The more he stared at the picture the more he longed to relive the past. He slowly drifted off as his thoughts wandered. When he had woken up, his clock read the time; 12:48 PM.

Ah crap. I overslept… Megumi thought to himself. He got out of bed and changed into his uniform. He told Yuji and Nobara that he’d meet them at Akihabara today at 12:30. He was 18 minutes late. He quickly grabbed his phone from off the bed-side table and sent a text to Yuji saying “Overslept. Be there in 10.” After he sent that text he got his shoes on and walked out his bedroom. He had to call Ijichi to take him to where Yuji and Nobara were. When Megumi arrived, Yuji looked happy to see Megumi. Yuji had the goofiest smile on his face while Nobara on the other hand looked like she was about to beat the living crap out of Megumi for being so late. “What took you so long?! You were like—Over 20 minutes late! You NEVER oversleep Fushiguro!” Nobara complained. Her voice raised at every word that came out of her mouth. Her face was contorted with anger. Megumi just shrugged and glanced at Yuji. It looked like Yuji wanted to tell him something but didn’t want to interrupt Nobara’s lecture. “You boys follow me! We’re going… SHOPPING!!! And Itadori you’re holding my bags, Again. OK?” Nobara started walking and turned her head back to face Yuji when telling him that he would be holding the bags. Yuji just sighed and mumbled “Why do I always have to carry your bags…” Suddenly Nobara turned around with the most angriest look ever. “DID YOU JUST ASK ME THAT STUPID QUESTION?” Her tone was furious as she yelled. “Sorry…” Yuji murmured. Nobara turns back around to walk to the stores they were going to go to. Yuji and Megumi followed behind her. Megumi asked indifferently, “Itadori, Was there something you wanted to ask me while Nobara was scolding me for being late?” Yuji just looked up at him and quickly looked away. A faint blush formed on his cheeks. “Ah—uh… Yea… But—Nevermind… It’s nothing important…” Yuji’s voice wavered as he spoke. Megumi knew that it wasn’t just ‘nothing’ but he didn’t press further. Yuji noticed that Nobara wasn’t going to any specific place and was just looking around at the stores and giving them a sour look at the sight of them. “So… Kugisaki, Where are we even going…?” Yuji asked. “Thats the thing. I. DON’T. KNOW. You were the one who suggested we shop around here and EVERYTHING in this town is just anime stuff!” Nobara said rudely. “Well I was thinking we should all see Human Earthworm 3!” Yuji always bugged them about taking them to see Human Earthworm in the theaters after he met Junpei who really really LOVED Human Earthworm. But Nobara and Megumi didn’t know that Yuji’s love for that movie came from Junpei since… that was when Yuji was still “dead” after Sukuna ripped out his heart that one time. “Absolutely not! I’m not going to watch some wormo-man!” Nobara said. “Sorry, Itadori. I don’t think we’d want to watch that movie with you…” Megumi said politely. Yuji sighed and spoke sadly, “I really just wanted to do something with you Fushiguro…” Nobara looked at Yuji and then at Megumi. “... Itadori do you like Fu—” Nobara was suddenly cut off by Yuji. “That’s not true!!” Yuji’s face turned bright red. How did she figure it out?! Yuji thought to himself. His thoughts were all over the place after Nobara said that. Megumi just looked at Yuji. His face had no emotion on it as usual. Yuji was terrified that Megumi had figured out what Nobara was about to say before Yuji cut her off. “Um. Do you guys want to head back to Jujutsu High? I don’t think this is really the best place to hang out…” Megumi’s voice was devoid of emotion as he spoke. “Sure I guess. I mean, you are right that we aren't going to do anything here.” Nobara said. The three of them walked back to Jujutsu High.

When they got back, they noticed their teacher, Gojo, wasn't there. Which was odd. Yuji went off to ask Nanami where Gojo was. Nanami told him that Gojo went out somewhere but won’t say his whereabouts and that it's not a mission. Yuji waved bye to Nanami because he was going to go tell Megumi and Nobara about what he said. Nobara didn’t really care when Yuji told her and Megumi was glad he was gone today. “Well, At least we won’t have that annoying tree telling us about how he got like—5000 crepes when he went on a walk less than 5 minutes long.” Nobara was relieved that Gojo wasn’t at Jujutsu High today. “I mean… True, But… Wouldn’t he tell someone like Nanami when he’s going out?” Megumi said. “He’s probably just getting more sweets as usual. Gosh I wonder how he can eat so much yet still be fit...” Nobara said. “Well I’m gonna go watch Human Earthworm 3 in the theaters again! I’ll see you two later!” Yuji waved to them and started to walk to the movie theater. He decided to take a detour since the road he usually takes is always busy. He saw a figure crouched on the ground. The figure looked familiar. The white hair… The blindfold… Is that Gojo-Sensei? Yuji thought. As he got closer his suspicions were proven right. It was Gojo. Except Gojo wasn’t acting all cheerful and happy like he’s always seen him. He was talking to the air. His voice was full of sadness as he spoke. Yuji couldn’t exactly hear what he was saying until he got closer. He heard Gojo say something along the lines of “Suguru… I miss you… Why did you have to become a curse user? You could have come to me with your problems… Suguru…” Gojo’s voice was filled with longing and sadness. Yuji had no clue who this ‘Suguru’ person was. Perhaps it was one of Gojo’s old friends or perhaps more than that. Yuji didn’t want to ask Gojo about it. It seemed like whoever that Suguru person was very special to him and bringing it up might upset him more.

Yuji just decided to head back to Jujutsu High. He felt odd seeing a very personal moment. He kept trying to forget about it as he walked but he was still curious about who ‘Suguru’ is. When he got back to Jujutsu High, Megumi noticed that Yuji came back 10 minutes after saying he was going to watch a movie. “Itadori, You’re back early. Did your movie get cancelled?” Megumi asked. Yuji shook his head. “No… I just saw something that I probably shouldn’t have so I just decided to come back here.” Yuji said. “Well, Itadori. I wanted to ask you if you wanted to go look at the ocean with me when it gets dark out…” As Megumi spoke, Yuji noticed that Megumi tried to make his voice sound as normal as possible. Megumi’s face had a slight pink tint to it. Is he blushing?! Yuji thought to himself. If Megumi was asking to go out somewhere while blushing… He has to be asking him out on a date and likes him back! Right? Or perhaps he’s just overthinking it. Megumi wouldn’t like a boy, right? Maybe Gojo told Megumi who sent the letter and that's why Megumi’s asking Yuji out? Yuji didn’t know how to respond. He wanted to go out with Megumi but he was worried that Megumi only meant it in a friendly way. “O-of course Fushiguro!” Yuji’s voice sounded unsure and nervous. He couldn’t look at Megumi’s eyes. It felt like his eyes were burning into his soul, reading his every thought and emotion. Megumi noticed it but didn’t say anything, he didn’t want to make it more awkward than it  already is. “Hm… Well, Itadori. I’m going to go to my room for a bit. I’ll see you at… 8:00?” Megumi’s voice was devoid of emotion which was quite normal for the stoic boy. “Yeah! See you then!” Yuji spoke with that goofy smile on his face. Megumi started blushing at the sight of Yuji smiling but quickly hid his blushing face, Megumi thought Yuji was so adorable when he smiled. It always made him so happy to see him smile but he always hid his feelings behind a blank face.

Megumi walked back to his dorm room. He was lost in thought about something until he felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned around. It was Gojo. “Heyyyy Megumi~ I heard you asked Yuji out on a date!~” Gojo teased. His arrogant voice echoing through the small hallway. “I-it’s not like that…” Megumi mumbled. “I doubt that. Tell me how it goes when you’re back!” Gojo said and walked away. When Megumi got to his dorm room, he noticed a rose at his door. He picked it up. It was his favorite colour. Megumi put one of the petals between his thumb and pointer finger. He lifted the rose to his nose and smelt it. “I wonder who left the rose… They must know me well enough to choose my favorite colour.” Megumi said to himself while opening his door and going into his room. He walked over to his cabinet and grabbed a cup and filled it with water and carefully placed the rose inside of the cup and put the cup near the window. “Such a pretty rose… If it had to have been someone I know well… Was it Itadori who sent it?! Ah—No… It can’t be…” Megumi wanted to believe it was Yuji who sent it but… Wouldn’t he just give it to him outright? Megumi kept overthinking it for about 30 minutes until he realized it was 7:59.

“Ah—Crap… I better hurry or he’d be late. He got his shoes back on and rushed out the door. He saw Yuji and his heart felt like it jumped into his throat. “Oh hey Fushiguro! I see we left our room at the same time! Let's go watch the moon now!!” Yuji turned to Megumi and walked over to him and grabbed his hand and dragged him out of the dormitory area. They walked outside. Their footsteps sounded loud in the quiet night. They went to the park where they would be able to look at the night sky clearly. They sat down together on a bench. Yuji scooted closer to Megumi and told him that he was cold. Megumi checked the temperature on his phone and saw that it was only 5℃. He took his sweater off and gave it to Yuji. “Here… Just give it back when you have time…” Megumi’s voice was soft and caring. Yuji had never heard Megumi’s voice be so caring before. It seemed Megumi only let that side of him show when they were completely alone.

“Hey Fushiguro… The moon sure is beautiful tonight, Isn’t it…?”
