Chapter 1: Character sketch

Chapter Text

GAO TU

Age: 28
Designation: Omega (hidden)
Role: Personal Secretary to Shen Wenlang

Gao Tu is the kind of person people forget is in the room and he works hard to keep it that way. Neat clothes, nothing memorable. Quiet voice, never the first to speak. He shows up fifteen minutes early to everything and leaves exactly on time. Nobody at the office knows his birthday. That's intentional.
Underneath all that carefully constructed invisibility is someone who feels everything just quietly, just alone, just at home after the door is locked. He cries at commercials. He has a playlist he only listens to with headphones. He remembers every small thing people tell him their coffee orders, their bad days, the names of their siblings and never mentions that he remembered.

His Background:
Gao Tu grew up with a single mother who was terrified for him. She'd seen what happened to Omegas who were found out passed over, taken advantage of, reduced to their designation. So the moment his presented at seventeen, she sat him down and said: "Nobody can know." He didn't argue. He never really has. He just started taking suppressants and learned to be invisible and told himself it was protection, not a cage.

He met Wenlang in university. They weren't close Wenlang was in a different circle, magnetic and intimidating in equal measure. Gao Tu fell for him the way you fall for someone impossible: quietly, completely, with absolutely no intention of doing anything about it. When a job posting came up at Wenlang's company three years after graduation, he applied without letting himself think too hard about why.

A Small Detail:
He keeps his suppressants in a plain metal case that looks like a breath mint tin. Nobody has ever asked about it.

SHEN WENLANG

Age: 32
Designation:Alpha (S-class)
Role:CEO, Wenlang Pharmaceutical

Wenlang is the kind of man who walks into a room and the temperature changes. Not because he demands attention he doesn't. It's something quieter than that. A stillness. A sense that he has already assessed everything and found it manageable. He speaks in complete sentences, never raises his voice, and has never once sent a message that used an exclamation point.

He is deeply, almost comically, bad at feelings. Not because he doesn't have themhe has them constantly but because he was raised in an environment where feelings were liabilities. His parents' marriage was a disaster dressed up in propriety. He watched his Omega mother pour herself into a relationship that diminished her and decided, at about age twelve, that emotions were something to be managed, not indulged.

Wenlang built his company from a mid-sized family business into something genuinely impressive through sheer relentless focus. He is respected and a little feared and has approximately three friends, one of whom is his grandmother. He has been in relationships short, functional, neatly ended but nothing that ever got close enough to matter.

His prejudice against Omegas is real but complicated. It's not contempt it's something closer to protectiveness twisted into avoidance. He associates Omega designation with vulnerability, and vulnerability with suffering, and he doesn't want to watch anyone suffer the way his mother did. This logic is flawed. He has not yet realized that.

A Small Detail:
When he's thinking hard about something, he straightens objects on his desk. His assistant Gao Tu noticed this in week one and started leaving one thing slightly out of place every morning. Wenlang has never mentioned it. He always fixes it. It's the first thing he does when he sits down.

CHEN YULAN

Age:71
Designation: Omega
Role:Wenlang's paternal grandmother and the most dangerous person in the story

Sharp as a blade, warm as a kitchen in winter. She has buried a husband, raised a difficult son, watched her grandson close himself off year by year, and decided in her seventies that she has been patient long enough. She doesn't manipulate she simply sees, and then she says what she sees out loud with the unearned confidence of someone who has stopped caring what's awkward.

She knows what Gao Tu is the moment she meets him. She says nothing. She waits. She is very, very good at waiting.
