   Everything happened so fast. 

   Mira’s sneakers slipped in a slick patch of blood on the road, dripping from the unconscious woman cradled in her arms. She held Rumi tighter, their leader’s head lolled back in her arms. Zoey rushed over, resting a steadying hand on Mira’s elbow and propping Rumi’s head against her chest.
