Mars takes a deep breath as he moves towards Earth's orbit. The blue planet seemed to be lost in thought as he approached.
"Earth!"
Mars chuckled as he watched Earth's eyes lock onto him, his eyes constricting before dilating when he realised it was him. Mars kept telling him that he needed glasses, but the other was always so stubborn.
"Hey, Mars! What'cha need?"
"You think we could go to your surface for a little bit? I think we both deserve a break after everything."
Mars pretended to not notice Earth's tail rattling in excitement. He loved taking the others to his surface, especially Mars. Whether it's because he wants them to marvel at his beauty or to share it with them he doesn't know. But what he does know is he wants to preserve Earth's smile.
"So! You got anywhere in mind?"
Mars' thoughts were broken by the sound of Earth's voice.
"Nah, dude. I trust you."
Earth smiled as he grabbed Mars by the arm, and stars did that send an immediate flush to the smallers face, before he focused all of his energy onto transporting them.
Earth landed on his surface with a dignified step. Mars on the other hand, not so much. He stumbled and leaned against a tree for ballance.
"I'm never going to get used to that."
"Come on, it's not that bad, you're just being a baby."
Mars rolled his eyes at Earth's remark but he couldn't hide the smirk that graced his face.
He was about to retort when he got a look at where they were. A beautiful flower field filled with beautiful hues of blue, pink and purple.
His eyes soon drifted back towards Earth. He lacked his distinctive reptilian features here, looking a lot more 'human' if you would.
It was ironic, the planet with life also looking the least humanoid, like the other planets.
"It's...beautiful."
And he wasn't just talking about Earth's surface.
Earth found a clear patch of grass and plopped down, patting the ground next to him, inviting Mars to sit, and he obliged, sitting next to his best friend, and oh how he wished they were more.
"So, where are we?"
Earth's eyes lit up as Mars asked, he loved talking about all of his earthlings, not just the humans or the sentient ones.
"We're in a flower field, down the south of the UK."
Mars smiled as he heard Earth ramble on about his surface. He loved the enthusiasm that would fill the other when he spoke. Mars knows that Earth will only ever bring him and the others to places that have been the least touched by pollution. He wishes that Earth would be honest about his struggled for once.
But Earth was too proud for that.
As the other was speaking, Mars notices a strange yellow flower. It didn't look anything like the others in the field.
Earth notices this, and speaks.
"Oh, that's not supposed to be here."
"It's not?"
"No it's native to South America. Did one of my earthlings bring one over again."
Earth grumbled something about recklessness and Mars chuckled. He gently held the flower by the stem in two fingers. He looked up at Earth who nodded. Mars carefully plucked the flower and threaded it into the others hair.
He blushed as he felt Mars' fingers brush against his hair.
"There, now it's just as pretty."
Earth's face went bright red.
"Mars!"
Mars chuckled, feigning innocence.
"What?"
"You-! I-! Shut up!"
Earth hid his face in his hands in an attempt to save himself from anymore embarrassment.
"C'mon, dude. What else am I meant to do on your surface if not to admire you."
"You flatter me."
"It's true."
The two sat in a comfortable silence for a while, until Mars shifted, picking up the courage to do something he's wanted to do for billions of years.
"Um, dude?"
"Hm?"
Earth tilted his head at Mars' change of tone. He seemed nervous. Did he do something again? Was he going to leave again?
Mars took a deep breath, gently putting his hand on Earth's.
"There's something I've needed to tell you for a long time." He breathes. Come on Mars, it's Earth you're confessing to. The worse you'll get is a joke about how everyone loves him. That thought strangely doesnt put him at ease. "I...like you. I've liked you for a while now."
He looked back up at Earth who seemed to be buffering. His face had returned to the same crimson colour it was minutes before. It was like Mars had shaken his entire world.
"You...what?"
Mars looked away again. Here comes the rejection.
But instead of rejection, he was rewarded with a small squeal that came from the blue planet. Earth was not one to hide when something excited him. And while he was a master at masking any negative emotions, he let's his positive ones run wild.
Mars looked at him and smiled.
"Is that a yes?"
"Yes!"
Earth threw his arms around Mars, tackling him to the ground I'm a fit of giggles.
The soft grass cushioned their fall, basically hugging him as he led there.
And Earth
Oh, Earth
His face shone brighter than the sun himself.
He hasn't seen the other smile like this in centuries.
Mars was never impulsive but right now he was tempted to act.
He leaned upwards and pressed a small kiss on Earth's nose.
He froze before somehow smiling wider and leaning his face in Mars' chest, which was slightly awkward due to how much bigger than Mars, but he somehow made it work.
"I could stay here forever."
Mars smiled.
"Yeah, me too. But we should probably go back before the sun panics that I'm still in your orbit."
Earth frowned.
"Yeah, I guess you're right."
Before they left, Mars took a quick glance at the flower field once again. And for a brief moment it seemed that the entire field had grown brighter.
