Chapter 1: Inside the Dark Room

Chapter Text

Wonder opened his eyes that were heavy.  He was still in his black Phantom Thief attire and his Red Vision mask, concealing his face.  He was beaten up badly, and he really wished he could summon Titania or Sarasvati...  He needed that.

Wait, Lufel.  He looked around.  Lufel was not there.  He panicked. Where did he go?!  Was he okay?!

His thoughts had stopped when the doors opened.  A detective, he presumed based on his outfit and a...  Cat-headed Police Officer.  Honestly, he's done with trying to figure things out.

Honestly, he was glad Lufel was quick to figure out what was happening hours(?) earlier.  Otherwise, he would've been more confused.  Oh, Lufel, he hoped he was okay.

"We'll be keeping this short."  The detective says, with a serious expression.  "My name is Tsukauchi Naomasa.  We haven't been able to find anything about you in our system.  Let's start with your name."

Wonder was silent.  He remembered Joker's horrible experience in an interrogation room and of a certain detective who he had a very... Complex friendship with...

"What did you do to Cattle?"  Wonder refused to name himself...

"Cattle?"  Both the detective and the police officer were confused.

"The owl."  Wonder clarified.

"Oh, you named him that?"

"Not important."  Wonder's eyes darkened.  "WHERE.IS.HE?!"

The detective merely sighed.  "He's in a separate interrogation room.  He'll be alright once it's all over."

Wonder shakes his head.  "He'll be fine either way."

Tsukachi sighs.  "Your name?"  He asks again.

Wonder was hesitant again.  "Fine... Wonder."  He says, simply.

"Wonder?  A strange name for a villain."

Wonder gritted his teeth. "A villain?"  He questioned.  "Did kill people?  Did I make people suffer?  Did I commit crimes like theft or property damage?!"  He shakes his head.  "What crime did I do?!"

He didn't even bother to see their expressions.  But the Cat-headed police officer attempts to call him out.

"You used a quirk without a proper license!"

"Okay, so you wanted me to stand by and watch children potentially getting hurt or killed?"  He challenged.  "Did you want me to stand back and do nothing when I could've done something in that moment?  Look, I get it, there needs to be order, but you need to consider how strict that law should be."

The detective and police officer were taken aback.  He looked like a teen, yet he spoke as if he were older than that.  Not only that, he seemed to have raised a few points.

"Back to the topic, your name?"

Wonder could no longer delay or by time.

"Fine..."  He shrugs.  "Wonder."

"You claim that's your name?"

"Ever heard of stranger danger?"

Honestly, he started getting pretty enduring in that moment.

"Your Quirk?"

"Why should I tell you?"  Wonder questions.  He honestly didn't have a good grasp of what a "Quirk" is, so he had to play this type of game.  "I'll only tell you if you tell me."  He played the game of trust and perhaps negotiation.  Honestly, he wasn't even skilled at negotiations, but he had to work with what he had.

"Well, my quirk is obvious."  The police officer says.  "Feline mutation."

"I could see that,"  Wonder says, pretending to know.  "I meant you, Mr. Detective."

Honestly, that made sense, so Tsukauchi told him.

"Its simply Polygraphs.  It works as a truth or lie detector."

"Well, makes sense why you chose this perfusion."  Wonder admits.

"Sadly, I don't even have a fancy quirk."  Stating he doesn't have a fancy quirk rather than having no quirk was a safe play.  He couldn't risk exposing his civilian identity.

"Don't lie to us!"  The police officer says, clearly irritated by what Wonder just said.  "We have witnesses who saw you using those creatures.  Even healing some victims.  You can't deny having a quirk."

"If I lied about that, what would be the point?"  Wonder challenged, still clearly tired.  "We have a literal living lie detector, and what I did wasn't a quirk!"

"You-!"

"He's not lying."  The detective reveals.  Even concerned about what Wonder had just said.

"How?!  That's impossible!"

"Honestly," Wonder rolled his eyes.  "I've experienced too many impossibilities already for my own liking."

"Truth."  The detective adds.

Honestly, Wonder couldn't care less if the detective would say "truth" or "lie" or whatnot, but he knew he had to be careful about what he said...

The detective dismissed the police officer who couldn't deal with Wonder anymore and faced him again.

"I expected better to be honest..."  Wonder admits.

The detective sighs and pushes that away.

"Your age?"

"I lost count after a while."  That wasn't a lie.  What Wonder went through was...  traumatic for anyone...

The detective sensed no lie. But he found it quite concerning about how he said it.

"Would also like to elaborate about what you meant by what you did wasn't a quirk?"

"No." Wonder refused.  "I don't need to tell you."

"Look, kid, we're getting nowhere, and we need answers.  I can't help you unless you cooperate with me.  Are you at least willing to answer other questions?"

Wonder shrugged.  "Fine..."

The first question was asked.

"What do you know of the League of Villains?"

"You mean the group led by that creepy hand guy?"  Wonder asks.  "Aside from wanting to kill All Might, hurt students, kill, and other motives I can't remember, I don't know anything else."

"So you're saying, you never met Shigaraki Tomura after this?"

"The hand man?  No."

"Then how did they recruit you?"

Wonder was irritated.  He thought internally that Pancake Detective was more observant than this.  "I was never recruited by them unless you were blind to not see that I fought them?"  He shakes his head.  "Wait, no, you weren't there, never mind."

“Okay. I may believe you, but the others won’t be so open-minded, even if I tell them about my quirk. They’ll say you had to have known their plans or at least worked with one of their numbers, to have the date and time that Class 1-A would be there.”

"Even if I never had a motive?  Of course..." Wonder rolled his eyes.  "If you want to know more about me, I only ended up there after I was attacked, and then I lost consciousness, and I woke up there.  Okay, technically my owl woke me up, but you get what I mean."

"You were attacked by a villain?"

"I don't know anymore."

Wonder was amazed to see how patient he was.  Honestly, maybe he shouldn't test him too much...

"Then you were...  brought there against your will?"

"Uh-huh..."

“But that doesn’t explain your costume or your unregistered quirk. It’s against the law to hide your quirk or participate in such activities without a license.” Tsukauchi said slowly, confused. “But I concede that you could be just as much a victim as the students who were at the USJ. Do you want to tell me what happened before your arrival there?”

"You wouldn't believe me."

"Try me."

Wonder sighs.  "Can I at least recount what I did during the USJ?"
