AITA for kissing my “straight” friend after he essentially confessed to me?

My best friend (19M) and I (19M) have been in a tense situation lately. 

A few weeks ago, my friend (I’ll name him Umbrella-kun) suddenly became under the impression that I was dating this guy (I’ll name him Sun-san) I met in my Scriptwriting class. Sun-san and I are completely platonic. 

I have, however, been in love with Umbrella-kun since we met in high school and I thought I was fairly obvious about it. I’m frequently doing romantic things for him simply because I want to even though I know he won’t return my feelings. Regardless, he knows that I’m gay and has been incredibly supportive. 

Anyway, he “confronted” me about my relationship with Sun-san and I corrected him regarding it. He seemed relieved. I thought that perhaps he had recently become aware of my feelings for him and foolishly hoped that he felt something for me. I asked him if he cared about who I dated. He responded that he didn’t. 

I knew how he meant it. I really did. And I didn’t blame him for it, but it hurt nevertheless that he felt nothing in the way I hoped. I supposed he just didn’t want the time we spent together reduced.

We didn’t speak much after that as I purposely distanced myself until Umbrella-kun cornered me today to talk. Initially, I was going to make up an excuse but the anxious look on his face made me stay. 

He told me that he did care who I dated and that he’d been feeling awful since he saw Sun-san hug me a few weeks prior. He said he didn’t like seeing me so happy around Sun-san when I was upset around him. He even mentioned seeing Sun-san with my cardigan the other day (I had mistakenly left it in class) and feeling frustrated afterwards. 

I was thoroughly surprised so I stayed silent until he tried to leave. That’s when I made up my mind to stop him. At that time, I felt like he finally understood how I felt and was reciprocating in his own way. So, I took the chance and kissed him.

He ran away soon after. That time, I let him go.

I feel awful. How could I allow how I feel to ruin our friendship like this? He had never shown any romantic interest in me before so why would I think anything was different now?

He’s hiding in the farthest practice room right now (it’s where he always goes to think) and I’m attempting to give him space before trying to salvage whatever is left of our relationship.

I definitely feel like an asshole.

TLDR; I kissed my best friend (who I'm desperately in love with) after he poured his heart out to me because I mistakenly took it as reciprocation.

[UPDATE 4] AITA for not wanting to witness my best friend being affectionate with his boyfriend?

Greetings, everyone! This is my final update to this original post!

First of all, thank you all for your advice! There were a lot of helpful people who commented as well as some… not so helpful, but it was because of you guys that we figured things out. 

Louis and I sat together in the practice room until everything was settled. I finally have answers to all of my initial questions.

⭐ I am not as straight as I originally thought. In my defense, I have never liked another guy before liking Louis. Though, he also may be the only person in general I’ve ever liked... Hmm. I’ll think about that later!

⭐ I am decidedly not homophobic. The horrible feeling I was getting was not solely because of Alfred but with the idea of anyone in general potentially dating Louis. I don’t want any other guy to date him simply because I want that role for myself. 

⭐️ I was experiencing jealousy. Not so surprising! It just happened to be of a romantic nature rather than a platonic one. 

⭐️ Louis has…been in love with me for quite some time now. He said he’s been hinting at it through his words and actions but I never noticed. However, I know now that I wouldn’t have wanted him to be that affectionate with anyone else.

He also apologized for distancing himself. Turns out you guys were right that he wasn’t just looking for support and I completely misread his feelings.

Regardless, we spent a lot of time clarifying! And confessing!! As a result, we definitely understand each other now.

Before anyone asks, yes, we are together now! It’s all very new for me but as I mentioned before, Louis is pretty amazing. I know we’ll be able to work through everything together!
