Voice Notes

Summary:

Inspired by the voice memories, I've created a collection of "recorded" journal entries made by Rook during the four years between the defeat of Calamity Ganon and the arrival of the Upheaval.

Canon to World Serpent but not The Wild Things, Ouroboros, or Requiem.

Notes:

As it says on the tin!

This also isn't me totally putting off working on World Serpent, lol.

Work Text:

Lanayru Region

Other

Lanayru Prominade

It was here, after Zelda’s visit to the Spring of Wisdom, that the Calamity arrived. Unfortunately, we had the perfect view of such. It was also the last time Zelda and I saw the other Champions, our friends, alive.

Spring of Wisdom

This Spring was long, long ago built in honour of Nayru, the Goddess of Wisdom. Prior, you had to be seventeen to ascend its slopes, as if such a number made someone wise. Utter bollocks if you ask me—and Nayru too, when I asked. Though she chuckled, and said, “Most think wisdom comes with age, but in truth, it comes from experience. You need not be an adult to experience the world.” I doubt truer words could be spoken.

Zora’s Domain

Entry into Zora’s Domain

Zora’s Domain had sparked a sense of great familiarity when Sidon had escorted me into the city. That made sense, since I had spent summer months during my younger years as a trainee here. I wish I remembered more of that time… everyone is so kind to me.

Mipha’s Court Statue

Mipha… She was such a wonderful and kind woman. She had become something of a second mother to me when my own couldn’t be. While after freeing Vah Ruta, I had left quickly, I made sure to come back once I was in a much better headspace. Though this was after I had reunited with Zelda. Zora’s Domain, much like Gerudo Town… it had sparked much grief in me for the memories they hold.

Sidon and Rook statue

Sidon is… quite the enthusiastic uncle. Though a hundred years ago, I had been the older one and now that’s been flipped. It’s hard to compare him to the tiny Zora back then, who had yet to grow into his head tail. He’ll make a fine king someday, I know it. Mipha is no doubt proud of him.

Necluda

Kakariko

Entry into Kakariko Village

Kakariko was the first true village I visited, and it was just over a week after I had descended from the Great Plateau. I received such a warm welcome… despite the state I was in. It must have seemed like a strange, feral child had wandered into town. Though that wasn't quite far from the truth, I'll admit. Skittish as I was.

Elder’s Home

After arrival, Cado and Dorian had ushered me up to meet with Impa, and I can still see it clearly—Granny’s horrified noise at seeing me covered head to toe in mud! Paya had tried desperately to stifle her laugh. Sheik… not so much. Poor Dusk had looked mortified at the state he had delivered me in! As mortified as a wolf could look, anyhow.

East Hill Lake

On the ledge above where Cotera resides, Sheik and I would train often as Impa hadn’t allowed me to leave Kakariko Village without first being able to defend myself. Though my body remembered, my mind did not. I fell into a routine quickly with Sheik’s help.

Community Cooking Pot

While Sheik took over my physical training, Paya assigned herself as my teacher for many other aspects. It was she who inspired my love for cooking. Though it was funny, often watching the twins bicker about spice levels. Sheik… can’t handle much, Paya on the other hand… haha.

Blatchery Plains

Duelling Peaks Stable

Duelling Peaks Stable was the first point of civilisation I ever came across—and they were as surprised to see me as I was them! Though they took one look at me and treated me like a stray cat, all but pspspsing at me! I was mortified when Zelda told me she had seen that while she was imprisoned in the castle.

Ash Swamp

The area is still, even a hundred years later, covered in the remains of the Guardians that Zelda had purified upon unleashing her power. It was such a beautiful sight. I’m glad I can remember that at least. But… I think it is agreed that this area will be the first to be tackled in dismantling the old Sheikah Tech.

Fort Hateno

Visibly, I barely remember fragments. On the contrary… it seemed my ears were well tuned during my last few moments. All I remember are Ellie’s sobs and pleas. I… try not to think about it.

Hateno

Entry into Hateno

Hateno has become home. They welcomed not just me but Ellie too in the wake of Calamity Ganon’s defeat. Life here is much different from what vague recollections I have of Castle Town, and I am unashamed to admit that I much prefer it here in Hateno.

School House

Zelda has spent months slaving over plans to set up a small school in Hateno. There are only a dozen children that live here but an education can do no wrong. On top of that, Symin has eagerly offered him and his knowledge, especially since Purah is often occupied with me on restoration planning.

Rook and Zelda’s House

Home sweet home. I had felt guilt in the moment—a purchase and motive that felt selfish but… I had thought, once I had defeated Calamity Ganon and freed Zelda… where would we live? Perhaps a bit forward of me, but… Zelda had cried happily when I showed her. So maybe not so forward of me after all, haha.

Hornered Statue

There was a strange, horned statue here once. I stumbled upon it by accident and she spoke to me. I felt it as she stole a piece of me—and made me pay to get it back! Though immediately afterwards, lightning came out of nowhere and struck it. The statue shattered. It seemed… someone had not been impressed by the statue’s sly actions.

Tech Lab

It was the third visit to Purah that I finally gathered the courage to ask her about the mechanisms of the Slate. It was then that I learned Purah had been my teacher a hundred years ago! She was asked to do so by my grandfather, Arthur Hawthorne. But Purah’s Sheikah Slate explanation had re-inspired my love for learning and science as a whole!

Other

Lover’s Pond

Ellie told me this pond wasn’t here a hundred years ago, though there were mentions of the mountain being climbed for wish-making. I had stumbled upon Lover’s Pond by accident and dreamed of bringing Zelda, and when I did, we had a lovely picnic.

Lurelin

I have little memory of Lurelin from before the Calamity, but apparently, my Grandmother’s sister had married a man from here. I wonder if that family line survived…

Floret Sandbar

Magda is a lovely woman, for all that she is scary. She happily agreed when I mentioned wanting to make a garden to try to grow various flora. I was especially eager to propagate the Silent Princess, a flower much more common now than a hundred years ago. Zelda, upon showing her, had been quick to suggest growing Blue Nightshade among them. Magda, not knowing that Zelda had said such because Blue Nightshades were my favourite, eagerly agreed. I love Zelda more than words can describe most days.

Faron

Spring of Courage

The Spring of Courage was the second I visited during my journey. Farore was the slightest bit miffed that I had visited Nayru before her, believing as my patron Goddess, she should have been first. I felt just a bit like a scolded child! Though she was quick to take credit for the destruction of the Horned Statue in Hateno, which I thanked her for.

Zonai Ruins

Seeing these ruins… it inspired a curiosity in me that I bonded with Taruo over when I met him. I was more than happy to fund his ventures and eagerly join them too!

Central Hyrule

Dragon’s Roost

Mabe Village

There was little left of my home village, but life flourishes here now with the construction of Dragon’s Roost, making use of the old ruined structures to build anew.

Ranch Ruins

My home… even now I can smell the lovingly baked goods and hear her voice. My younger memories are spotty at best but once I had risen to the Royal Guard—and rewarded the luxury of time off I couldn't be denied—I spent as much time here as possible, and whisked Zelda away to when I became her Appointed Knight. Mama was always happy to set an extra plate for Ellie. Somehow, Mama always knew what to say too.

Dragon’s Roost

Dragon’s Roost… it’s come so far in just three years. So many people have come together to help me with my vision… I can't thank them enough.

Lookout Landing

Lookout Landing was designed to be our main base of operations as we worked to restore Hyrule. So many people flocked to offer their help, wishing to repay me for my actions. It… became home too eventually, with long days wielding tools and late nights filled with laughter.

Rook and Zelda’s house, 1st Floor Office

The main office for planning is located in Zelda and I’s house, though it had not been intended for that purpose. Late and sleepless nights transformed it from the original purpose rather quickly. We should probably reorganise things in here. It's… a little too chaotic, even for Purah most days.

Rook and Zelda’s house, Bedroom Loft

Home away from home. The building was designed to house Purah’s pet project telescope, mirroring the one from Hateno. Though inside, it ended up becoming Zelda and I’s home here in Dragon’s Roost. I’m particularly taken with the bed canopy that Zelda embroidered with Farosh, Dinraal and Naydra. I do so adore the Guardian Serpents. I just wish we knew what Uriel really looked like… Maybe Purah’s telescope could help during the next Light Festival? Or does that take away the magic of it? Hmm…

Hyrule Castle

Outer Castle Town Wall

Lainey and I would meet up here some nights after she returned from Gerudo Town to study medicine in Castle Town. I’m glad she got to have a childhood, to experience life one year at a time unlike myself, who trained day in and day out. I remember feeling envious of her sometimes, but… I would have never wished our places swapped.

Castle Gates

So many people tried to make my life hard, but often, just as many, those of ordinary standing, were the total opposite. They made my life here at the castle much more tolerable after I reached ten and my grandfather could no longer use the excuse of me being underage for denying the castle to be my main residence.

Barracks

Despite the hardships, my squad always tried to make things easier for me. Of course, they were all much older than I was, Groose being the youngest after me at twenty-two. They make sure I ate and rested as much as I was able to, often squirrelling me away and distracting higher-ups, even at the risk of their jobs. I often thought, was this what having older siblings felt like?

Kitchens

The castle kitchens… I used to sneak in here and let the head cook fill my pockets with treats for Zelda and myself. I used to affectionately call her aunty. I wish I remembered her name…

Great Plateau

Entrance to the Great Plateau

The Great Plateau is the birthplace of the re-established Kingdom of Hyrule, which happened fifty thousand years ago, three hundred years after the Timeline Convergence. I wonder what it looked like back then. Was it as covered in snow as it was now? Climates do change after all.

Shrine of Resurrection

After the Blatchery Plains Guardians were disassembled, the Shrine was the next to go. I couldn’t bring myself to approach, even after all this time. Every part of me had trembled. It hadn’t been like that when I emerged but… I was all but a blank slate then… Purah said my reaction was understandable, but I feel a little like a coward. It saved me after all.

Temple of Hylia

The temple and monastery is entirely intact, since Purah blocked the entrance to the Plateau after sealing me into the Shrine. Even now, this is my favourite place to come and speak with Hylia. It has the most detailed statue of her too, though Hylia says its depiction isn’t all that accurate. Creative liberties for a Goddess no one has seen, I suppose.

Eldin

Goron City

Goron City, home of the Gorons. Once, it had been too hot to visit without protection but now Vah Rudania has settled, so has the lava. Visiting has never been easier—lava has even drained to reveal a much larger expanse of Death Mountain’s base!

Yunobo

When I first met Yunobo, I felt like I was looking a little bit into a mirror with how nervous he was, reminding me of my first few weeks awake. He’s become such a good friend.

Daruk’s statue

I can remember fondly of my time with Daruk—and how mortified the other Champions had been to learn of my ability to eat rocks! Revali especially, and I can recall it was the first time I had openly laughed in front of him. The face he had made… it still cracks me up.

Hot Springs

The hot springs here in Eldin are always a wonderful treat, and they’re especially effective on my scars! I had been so excited at that discovery that it had been put onto my bucket list to show Zelda once I freed her. Unfortunately, the heat was a bit too much for her! I made sure to take Zelda to the Hebra springs to make up for it.

Great Hyrule Forest

Deku Tree

The Great Deku Tree, guardian of the Koroks and watcher of the Mastersword. I can remember how mournful they were when I came stumbling into the clearing as an eight-year-old… even the Deku Tree knew then of the great burden about to be placed on my shoulders years before Calamity Ganon’s return.

Fi’s Pedestal

Fi… I struggled to hear her before, but now, she has never been clearer. After I had pulled her, Fi had spoken to me quite often. I was a little saddened to place her back, but… she needs her rest. Besides, I can visit whenever I want and she’s always happy to see me.

Korok Forest

The Koroks… I really do adore them, such lively and wonderful beings. They’re always excited to see me, and some come to visit me even while I'm out and about.

Akkala

Terray Town

Entry in Terray Town

Terray Town has come so far since its conception, and now it flourishes. Hudson and everyone have poured nothing but love into this place. It was what inspired Dragon’s Roost.

Terray Town’s Hylia Statue

Hudson and Rhondson’s wedding was beautiful and such a simple affair. Ellie and I had spoken about wanting to do something similar, with just our closest present when the time came. Impa, on the other hand, wants to make it a celebration—we are to be the future rulers after all. She's been on our case about it for a while… Maybe we could elope and do something larger later to make Impa happy…?

Other

Robbie’s Lab

The first time I met Robbie, he scared me right back out of the door! Dusk had not been pleased and Jerrin had to assure me her husband was just an eccentric old man. I stayed for Jerrin’s cookies and Josha’s questions. …Robbie soothed his approach after a scolding from his wife.

Spring of Power

I have beef with Din—and she knows it! Why can’t she answer a simple question? Why do I have Power? I have no need for it, no want of it! And I refuse to take “Power itself is neither good nor evil; it is the individual wielding that power that defines it” and “those who don’t seek power are the least likely to abuse it” as answers. Din, just give me the real reason, damnit!

Hebra

Rito Village

Rito Village… it was the first I had no familial connections with besides my friendship with Revali. Perhaps that was why I came to love it so quickly. Though the reason may also lie with the Rito themselves…

Teba & Saki

Teba took one look at me and, to quote him, “Knew you were mine instantly”, while I was ready to fight tooth and nail to convince him that I was more than capable of taking on Vah Medoh as I was. I was certainly not. Saki had threatened to burrito me in several blankets if I didn't rest. She… had not been lying. Tulin had watched from the sidelines curiously… and highly amused.

Revali’s Landing

Revali was by far the best archer I had the honour of meeting, and once he had come around, we trained often together. A way to a Rito Champion’s heart was by sharing a love for archery apparently, haha.

Other

Forgotten Temple

Unfortunately, much of the temple is in ruin thanks to the Guardians. I took a pilgrimage here once a hundred years ago. Grandfather claimed it was a right of passage for the Wielder of the Mastersword—apparently, my father had done much the same. Hylia’s Mother Statue is located here, too—the largest statue in all of Hyrule. It’s truly beautiful, and dates back to before the first hero was born. I can see why it might have been a pilgrimage for me now.

Gerudo Desert

Kara Kara Bazaar

The Gerudo there had taken one look at me, known who I was, and offered me a bed for free. When I woke the next morning, Riju and her guards were there to meet me! Just a little bit terrifying.

Entry into Gerudo Town

As a rare Son of a Gerudo (but not a Gerudo Son, big difference), I am one of the few men permitted entry into the city. I rarely had the chance to visit before the Calamity, and only once I was Zelda’s Appointed Knight. A fact I was very disappointed about, as I wished I had been able to connect more with my heritage on my Mama’s side. Something I have finally been able to do in recent years.

Throne room

Riju is the youngest Chief in many generations, and only because the Yiga Clan had assassinated her mother. It was a burden Riju inherited much too soon, and lost a loved one in the process.

Honouring Lainey

Lainey had spent her last two decades here in Gerudo Town but before that, she had spent her life as a wandering doctor, using her skills to treat and teach those all across Hyrule. Apparently, she even visited the surrounding nations too in an attempt to broaden her skills! She passed only a week before my awakening, a fact I was greatly saddened by at the time, but now, I can only hope she and Mama are watching over me, proud of who I have become.

Honouring Urbosa

Urbosa… a mother to Zelda when her own couldn’t be there. What a strong, powerful woman you were. You were always more than happy to put Rhoam in his place. I just know you’re so proud of the woman Zelda has become.
