Work Text:
The forest still clung to Chan’s fur when the village came into view.
Damp earth, pine needles, the metallic tang of blood from the morning hunt. It all lingered in the air as the hunting party broke through the last stretch of trees and stepped into the open clearing at the edge of the pack’s territory.
The village sat just beyond the tree line, low wooden structures spread carefully through the clearing. Smoke curled lazily from cooking fires, and voices drifted through the air as wolves moved through their morning routines.
Chan slowed his pace a little, letting the hunters spread out around him.
Beside him, Jeongin shook out his shoulders, still riding the rush of the chase. Behind them, Seonghwa let out a quiet laugh.
“You nearly overshot the deer,” he called.
Jeongin scoffed immediately. “I adjusted.”
“You tripped over a branch,” Jungkook added helpfully.
“I did not.”
Wooyoung snorted. “You absolutely did.”
Jeongin turned around to glare at him. “You were behind me.”
“Exactly,” Wooyoung said. “Perfect view.”
A few of the older hunters chuckled. San was already hauling one side of the deer toward the village while Yunho walked beside him, steady and unbothered by the bickering.
Chan huffed a quiet laugh under his breath and shook his head.
Hunts were always like this with them. Half coordination, half chaos. Still, they worked well together. Better than most groups in the pack.
As they crossed the outer boundary of the village, a few wolves looked up from their work. Some nodded respectfully toward Chan. It had been happening more often lately.
Chan tried not to think about it.
Instead, he focused on the familiar rhythm of the village unfolding around them.
“Minho’s going to complain about how messy that cut is,” Jungkook muttered as they approached the cooking fires.
“Minho complains about everything,” Wooyoung said.
“That’s because you give him reasons to,” Seonghwa replied calmly.
Behind Chan, Jeongin leaned closer and murmured under his breath, “At least the pups won’t hear them arguing this time.”
Chan raised an eyebrow. “The pups?”
Jeongin gestured toward the center clearing. “The nursery. Felix has them out today.”
And then Chan smelled it.
Warm. Soft. Vanilla.
Felix.
Chan had seen the nursery clearing a hundred times before. It sat near the center of the village where the trees opened wide enough to let sunlight spill through the branches. Pups spent most of their days there while their parents worked, small bodies tumbling through the grass, little voices echoing through the clearing like birds.
It was usually noisy.
But the moment Chan stepped closer with the hunters behind him, something about the scene felt settled.
Felix sat in the middle of the grass, three pups climbing over him like he was part of the landscape. One tugged stubbornly at the sleeve of his shirt while another leaned heavily against his side, half asleep despite the chaos around them.
Felix laughed softly and eased the smallest pup off his shoulder before it managed to climb onto his back.
“Hey, careful,” he murmured.
The pup wagged its tail like it had done something clever.
Han was stretched out beside him in the grass, one arm folded behind his head as he watched the scene with open amusement.
“You’re encouraging them,” Han said lazily.
Felix looked offended. “I am not.”
“You absolutely are.”
Chan felt the warm thread of Felix’s scent in the air before he even stepped fully into the clearing. Vanilla, soft and warm in a way that made the whole space feel calmer than the rest of the village.
Jeongin slowed beside him, grinning. “They really do love him.”
Chan did not answer. He was too busy watching the way the pups moved.
Because Jeongin was right.
Every pup that wandered close to the clearing eventually found its way to Felix.
One toddled across the grass now, tripping over its own paws before finally reaching him. Felix lowered himself instinctively so the little wolf could climb into his lap.
Around them, the rest of the inner circle began to appear the way they always did.
Minho stepped away from the cooking fires first, wiping his hands on a cloth as he approached. “Try not to let them chew your sleeves again,” he said mildly.
Felix frowned down at the pup currently gnawing on the fabric. “It’s not my fault.”
“Debatable.”
Changbin wandered over next, wood shavings still clinging to his sleeves and a half-finished carving in his hand. He stopped a few steps away and watched the scene for a moment.
“Pretty sure you’re their favorite,” he said.
Felix groaned. “No.”
Hyunjin and Seungmin followed soon after, the sharp scent of herbs trailing faintly behind them. Hyunjin crouched when one of the pups wobbled toward him, letting it sniff his hand before it promptly lost interest and went straight back to Felix.
Hyunjin tilted his head. “That feels personal.”
Seungmin glanced down at the pup, unimpressed. “Statistically speaking, they always go back to Felix.”
Felix buried his face in his hands. “Please stop talking about me like I’m not here.”
Han snorted. “You started it.”
“I did not start it.”
“You exist,” Han said helpfully. “That’s enough.”
A laugh broke from Changbin before he could stop it.
Minho crouched near the edge of the group, watching the pups with quiet interest. “You know,” he said after a moment, “they follow you around all day.”
Felix lifted his head. “They do not.”
“They do,” Jeongin chimed in immediately.
Felix turned toward him with betrayal written all over his face. “Not you too.”
Jeongin shrugged. “I’m just saying.”
Another pup wandered over at that moment, clearly intent on joining the pile in Felix’s lap. Felix sighed and helped the tiny wolf climb up.
Han gestured broadly toward the scene. “See?”
Felix glared at him. “They’re babies.”
Hyunjin hummed thoughtfully. “They still choose you.”
Felix opened his mouth to argue again, but the pup in his lap suddenly tugged his sleeve hard enough to pull him forward.
The whole group paused.
Changbin leaned forward a little, watching with interest. The pup refused to let go. Felix tried gently pulling his sleeve back. The pup held tighter.
There was one beat of silence.
Then Han started laughing.
Minho shook his head slowly. “Case in point.”
Jeongin snorted, and even Seungmin looked faintly amused.
Felix groaned again, more dramatic this time. “I hate all of you.”
Chan stepped forward without really thinking about it. He crouched beside Felix and gently loosened the pup’s tiny teeth from the sleeve.
The pup looked mildly offended.
Felix looked up at him instead. “Thank you.”
The smile Felix gave him was easy and automatic, like it had always been there.
And something in Chan’s chest shifted.
Everyone was facing Felix. Not intentionally. Not in some obvious way. Just naturally.
Han leaned against his shoulder. Hyunjin sat close enough that their knees brushed. Changbin had angled himself toward the middle of the group. Minho watched from just behind them. Jeongin hovered nearby with all his restless curiosity, and Seungmin stood beside Hyunjin, quiet and attentive.
Felix sat in the middle of it all, surrounded by pups and laughter and the soft warmth of vanilla scent, like the center of something none of them had named yet.
The thought settled in Chan’s chest, quiet and sure.
The pups trusted Felix. The others drifted toward him without even realizing it. Somehow, they had all arranged themselves around him like this was the most natural thing in the world.
Felix did not seem to notice. He was too busy trying to stop another pup from chewing on Han’s sleeve now.
Han yelped. “Hey!”
Felix laughed, bright and warm, and the sound of it settled into the clearing like sunlight.
Chan watched the scene unfold around him, the quiet warmth of it pressing softly against his instincts. Something about the way the pack gathered around Felix felt inevitable, like a shape that had always been there. They just had not noticed it yet.
The village rarely held full gatherings unless something needed discussing, so when the horn sounded near the elder’s hall just before sunset, the entire pack slowly drifted toward the central clearing.
Hunters returned from the tree line in small groups. Workers set aside tools. The healer’s den closed early as Hyunjin and Seungmin joined the flow of wolves moving through the paths.
Chan arrived with the last patrol group, Jeongin walking beside him with tired but steady steps.
“What’s this about?” Jeongin asked quietly.
Chan shook his head. “Not sure.”
That alone was unusual. Usually the elders gave him some warning.
By the time they reached the clearing, the scent of tension was already in the air, sharp and uneasy. Two hunters stood near the center of the gathering circle with raised voices, one from the outer patrols, the other from the northern territory watch.
Chan recognized both of them. They were good hunters.
Right now, though, they looked ready to tear into each other.
“I’m telling you the border markers were moved,” the first one snapped.
“They weren’t moved,” the other shot back. “You misread the trail.”
“I know our territory.”
“And I know when someone’s looking for a fight.”
A ripple of murmurs moved through the gathered wolves.
Territory disputes always carried weight, especially this close to winter.
Chan stepped forward instinctively, Jeongin a half step behind him, but before he could say anything, one of the elders raised a hand.
“Enough.”
The clearing fell quiet, but the tension did not go with it. It hung in the air like the edge of a storm. Chan could feel the pack reacting around him, wolves shifting their weight, hunters trading uneasy glances, younger wolves growing restless in the crowd.
The argument had already stirred too many instincts.
Chan opened his mouth to step in.
But someone else spoke first.
“Can I say something?”
The voice was soft.
Still, the entire clearing turned.
Felix stood near the edge of the circle, one hand resting lightly on the shoulder of a small pup who had wandered too close to the gathering. Han stood beside him. So did Minho, Hyunjin, Changbin, Seungmin, and Jeongin.
The inner circle, without even trying.
Felix looked slightly startled by the attention, but he kept going.
“The pups play near the northern markers sometimes,” he said gently. “If they were moved, they could wander outside the boundary without realizing.”
The two arguing hunters paused.
Felix glanced between them. “I’m not saying anyone is wrong, but maybe we should check the markers again before we assume anything.”
His tone stayed calm. Careful. Not challenging either of them, just steady.
For a moment no one spoke.
Then one of the elders nodded slowly. “That would be the wisest course.”
The tension in the clearing loosened almost immediately.
The first hunter rubbed the back of his neck. “Fine. We can check again.”
The other hunter exhaled. “Yeah.”
And just like that, it was over.
No raised voices. No confrontation. Just a quiet agreement to investigate.
Chan stood perfectly still, because he had felt the shift the moment Felix started speaking.
The pack had settled.
Not because Felix ordered it. Not because he pushed. He had just spoken, and everyone had listened.
Felix looked relieved when the gathering began to disperse again. He crouched to guide the curious pup back toward the nursery path.
Han nudged his shoulder lightly. “Look at you, breaking up hunter arguments now.”
Felix made a face. “I just didn’t want them fighting.”
Minho hummed quietly. “Still worked.”
Hyunjin watched Felix with thoughtful eyes. Changbin folded his arms. Seungmin glanced toward Chan.
Chan looked around the clearing as the larger pack drifted back into motion. The elders were watching Felix. Not suspicious. Not displeased. Just aware.
When he looked back, Felix was talking quietly to the pup still clinging to his hand while the others settled around him as easily as breathing.
The realization in Chan’s chest deepened.
Felix had not tried to lead. He had not claimed authority. He had simply spoken, and the entire pack had listened.
The shape of things was becoming clearer now.
Felix already steadied the pack in ways most wolves would never think to name.
He just did not know it yet.
Night came slowly to the village.
The last of the evening fires burned low, their smoke drifting into the cooling air. Most of the pack had already settled. A few hunters remained near the edge of the clearing, talking quietly while Minho finished cleaning the last of the cooking pots.
The forest beyond the boundary had gone still.
That was the first thing Chan noticed.
Not silence exactly. The woods were never truly silent. But the normal sounds had faded. No rustle of smaller animals in the brush. No distant calls from birds settling in the trees.
Just the wind through the pines.
Chan stood near the outer fence line, arms folded loosely across his chest while he looked into the dark tree line. Jeongin stood a few steps away beside him.
“You’re doing that thing again,” Jeongin said quietly.
“What thing?”
“The listening thing.”
Chan did not answer right away.
Something felt wrong. He could not name it yet, but the feeling had been building slowly all evening. A shift in the air. A pressure in the forest.
Jeongin followed his gaze toward the trees. “You think something’s out there?”
Chan opened his mouth to answer.
Then a howl split through the forest.
It was not from their pack.
Every wolf in the village froze.
Another howl answered the first, closer this time, low and sharp and cutting through the trees like a blade through cloth.
Jeongin straightened immediately. “That’s not one of ours.”
The hunters near the fire stood in the same instant. Across the clearing Changbin looked up from the fence he had been repairing. Hyunjin stepped out of the healer’s den with Seungmin close behind him.
Minho abandoned the cooking area and moved toward the center of the village.
Felix had already gathered the nearest pups into the nursery den.
The second howl came again, closer now, and unease moved through the gathered wolves in one sharp ripple.
Chan felt something in his chest shift.
Instinct, sharp and immediate.
The hunters looked to him.
Not the elders. Not the patrol leaders.
Him.
Chan stepped forward.
“Hunters with me,” he said, his voice steady.
No hesitation.
Seonghwa and San moved first. Jungkook and Yunho followed immediately behind them. Wooyoung appeared beside the fence line with a quiet curse under his breath.
Jeongin was already at Chan’s side.
“We’ll check the boundary,” Chan continued. “No one leaves the village alone.”
Minho spoke from behind him. “I’ll secure the inner paths.”
Chan nodded once. “Good.”
The pack moved quickly now. Changbin reinforced the gate posts. Hyunjin guided the younger wolves toward the central buildings. Seungmin helped usher the last few pups toward the nursery.
Felix stood at the entrance to the den with two small wolves clinging to his legs.
His eyes met Chan’s across the clearing.
Concern flickered there, but Felix did not panic. He just nodded once.
Chan turned toward the forest. “Stay inside the boundary.”
Then they slipped through the gate together.
The forest swallowed them almost immediately.
The air beneath the trees felt heavier than before. The scent of unfamiliar wolves lingered faintly between the trunks.
Chan crouched near the ground and studied the disturbed earth.
Tracks. Fresh. Not from their pack.
Jeongin crouched beside him. “How many?”
Chan studied the ground carefully. “Three.”
San moved quietly through the brush a few steps ahead, scanning the tree line. “They’re close.”
Another low howl rolled through the forest.
Closer than the last.
Too close.
Chan rose slowly. “Stay together.”
The hunters spread into a loose formation without being told.
Another rustle sounded in the trees ahead.
Movement.
Then two wolves stepped into the moonlight.
Larger than expected. Lean with hunger.
Rogues.
They stared across the clearing at Chan and the hunters, yellow eyes catching the moonlight. A third wolf moved behind them in the shadows.
Jeongin inhaled sharply beside him.
Chan did not move.
The rogue wolves bared their teeth.
Testing. Measuring.
Chan stepped forward, and something inside him settled into place.
Not anger. Not fear.
Authority.
His voice cut through the forest. “You’re on pack territory.”
The rogues did not retreat. One of them took another step forward.
Chan felt the hunters behind him shift their weight.
The air tightened like a drawn bowstring.
Then the rogue wolf lunged.
The clearing erupted into motion.
San intercepted the first attack with a snarl. Jungkook and Yunho forced the second wolf back toward the tree line.
Chan moved without thinking.
The third wolf circled toward Jeongin.
Chan stepped between them.
The fight did not last long. Rogue wolves rarely expected resistance this organized. Within moments they had been forced back toward the deeper forest.
The last wolf snarled once before retreating after the others.
Silence returned slowly.
Chan stood still for a moment longer, listening.
The forest had gone quiet again.
“They’re gone,” San said finally.
Jeongin exhaled beside him.
Chan nodded. “Back to the village.”
They returned quickly.
The gate opened before they even reached it.
Minho stood there waiting.
“You’re bleeding,” he said immediately.
Chan glanced down at the shallow cut across his forearm. Nothing serious.
“I’ve had worse.”
Hyunjin was already approaching with Seungmin close behind him. “Sit,” Hyunjin said firmly.
Chan obeyed without argument.
The healer cleaned the wound quickly while Seungmin passed him clean cloth. Around them the village slowly settled again. Hunters returned to their posts. Changbin checked the gate supports one last time. The younger wolves began drifting back toward the central clearing.
The danger had passed.
But Chan could still feel the tension in the air. It lingered in the pack like a held breath.
Then Felix appeared.
He stepped out from the nursery path, brushing grass from his hands. The vanilla scent reached Chan before Felix did, warm and steady.
Felix crouched beside him. “You’re okay?”
Chan nodded.
Felix examined the bandage briefly, his expression focused. Then he rested a hand lightly against Chan’s shoulder.
It was a small touch. Nothing dramatic.
But the effect was immediate.
The tension in Chan’s chest eased.
Around them the rest of the inner circle drifted closer without thinking. Han dropped into the grass beside Felix. Changbin leaned against the nearby fence post. Minho folded his arms while watching quietly.
Hyunjin finished tying the bandage and stepped back.
The pack’s unease began to settle, slowly and naturally, and Felix stayed beside Chan the whole time, talking quietly, keeping the pups calm, making sure no one else had been hurt.
Chan watched him for a moment.
Felix had no idea what he was doing.
But the pack was calming around him all the same.
Just like before, only now it felt stronger. More certain.
Chan exhaled slowly.
Tonight something had changed.
The hunters had looked to him first. The pack had followed his lead without hesitation. And when it was over, they had all looked to Felix.
Like the answer had been waiting there all along.
The village did not fall asleep quickly that night.
Even after the rogues had been driven from the forest, the tension lingered like the last echo of a storm. Fires burned later than usual. Hunters rotated along the boundary paths. Voices stayed low and careful, as if speaking too loudly might bring the danger back again.
Chan sat near the central fire while Hyunjin finished wrapping the bandage around his arm.
“You’ll live,” Hyunjin said after a moment, tying the cloth neatly.
“Comforting,” Chan replied.
Seungmin handed Hyunjin a small jar of salve without needing to be asked. Hyunjin applied it carefully, practiced and calm.
Around them the rest of the inner circle had gathered without much discussion.
Minho leaned against a wooden post beside the cooking fire, arms folded while he watched the hunters move through the clearing. Changbin sat nearby sharpening a carving knife he had clearly brought with him from the workshop. Han had claimed a spot in the grass beside Felix and looked like he had no intention of moving any time soon.
Jeongin paced for a while before finally dropping onto the ground across from them.
“That was closer than I like,” he muttered.
“You did fine,” Chan said.
Jeongin glanced up at him. “I know.”
Han snorted. “Confidence looks good on you.”
“Jealous?”
“Very.”
Felix laughed quietly.
The sound was softer tonight, but it still carried warmth with it. The vanilla scent in the air had grown steadier again, wrapping gently through the clearing like the last heat of the fire.
Chan leaned back slightly against the wooden bench behind him and watched the rest of the village.
Hunters passed through the clearing in quiet pairs. A few elders spoke together near the meeting hall. The younger wolves had been sent back toward their dens, though a few still lingered nearby with curious glances toward the patrol groups.
The pack was recovering, slowly.
But it was still unsettled.
Chan could feel it in the way the hunters moved. They watched the tree line more than usual. Their shoulders stayed tense even while they talked.
The forest had reminded them tonight that safety was never guaranteed.
Minho stepped away from the cooking fire and approached the group. “Elders want a boundary sweep in the morning.”
Chan nodded. “Expected that.”
“I’ll go with the hunters again,” Jeongin added quickly.
“You were already planning to,” Minho said.
Jeongin grinned.
Changbin finally looked up from his knife. “Three rogues is unusual. Most don’t travel in groups that size.”
Han tilted his head. “You think they were scouting?”
“Maybe.”
The thought settled into the group like a quiet shadow.
Felix had been listening quietly the whole time. One of the younger pups had wandered back into the clearing and now slept curled against his leg.
Felix absentmindedly ran his fingers through the pup’s fur. “They were hungry,” he said softly.
The others glanced toward him.
Felix shrugged a little when he noticed. “Their ribs were showing. They probably weren’t expecting resistance.”
Minho hummed quietly. “Still dangerous.”
Felix nodded. “I know.”
He looked down at the sleeping pup again and gently adjusted its position so it would not roll onto the cold grass.
Something about the movement tugged at Chan’s chest.
Not command. Not authority.
Just care, quiet and instinctive.
And still, the rest of them answered it.
Han leaned closer to Felix, resting his shoulder lightly against his arm. Hyunjin settled beside him on the other side, the two of them unconsciously making a barrier around the sleeping pup. Changbin shifted closer to the fire but angled himself toward Felix.
Even Jeongin’s restlessness had eased now that he sat within the group.
The clearing felt calmer for it. The pack’s tension eased, little by little.
Chan felt the shift happen again, the same way it had earlier in the night.
Felix had not meant to do anything. He had simply sat down, and somehow the space around him had settled.
Minho noticed it too. Chan could tell from the quiet way his gaze moved between Felix and the rest of them.
Han noticed as well. His eyes flicked briefly toward Chan before he smiled faintly to himself.
They were all starting to see it.
Felix remained completely unaware. He was whispering something to the pup now, soft nonsense meant to soothe it back to sleep. The little wolf twitched once before relaxing again.
Chan looked toward the elders across the clearing.
A few of them were watching their group now. Not openly, but carefully. The same way hunters watched a new trail.
Minho followed Chan’s gaze and leaned slightly closer. “They’re noticing.”
Chan did not look away. “I know.”
Minho studied him for a moment. “About time.”
Chan glanced at him.
Minho’s expression stayed calm, but his meaning was clear.
Chan looked back toward Felix.
Felix had leaned sideways now, letting the pup rest more comfortably against his leg. Han had shifted closer again while Hyunjin continued quietly checking the pup’s breathing the way he did with every injured or frightened wolf.
The inner circle had formed its usual pattern around Felix without thinking.
But tonight something felt different.
The pack had looked to Chan when the danger came.
And now they had settled again because Felix was here.
Two halves of something that had not been spoken yet.
Chan watched the quiet scene for another moment. Firelight flickered across Felix’s hair while the pup slept peacefully beside him. The rest of them stayed close without needing to be asked.
The shape of the future pressed gently at the edge of Chan’s thoughts.
Not tomorrow. Not even soon.
But inevitable.
He stood slowly.
The others looked up.
Felix tilted his head. “Everything okay?”
Chan nodded. “Yeah.”
Felix studied his face for a moment longer before relaxing again.
Chan stepped away from the fire and walked toward the edge of the clearing. Behind him, the quiet warmth of the group remained intact.
Felix’s scent drifted softly through the air.
Sooner or later, the rest of the village would understand what Chan already did.
Morning came pale and quiet.
Mist lingered low over the grass, thin strands of fog drifting between the wooden buildings of the village. The air smelled damp and cold, the way it always did after a restless night.
The pack was already awake.
Hunters moved along the boundary paths in pairs, finishing the early patrol before the sun had fully cleared the tree line. Smoke curled from the cooking fires where Minho had started the morning meal. Somewhere near the healer’s den, Hyunjin and Seungmin were already sorting herbs.
Life had returned to its usual rhythm.
But something had changed.
Chan felt it in the way the hunters nodded toward him as he passed, in the quiet way the elders watched him from the edge of the meeting hall, in the unspoken expectation hanging in the air.
He had taken charge the night before.
The pack had followed without hesitation.
No one had questioned it.
Chan stepped into the central clearing where several of the elders had already gathered. The boundary patrol had returned not long ago, reporting that the rogue wolves had retreated deeper into the forest.
For now, the territory was safe again.
One of the elders looked toward him. “You handled the situation well.”
Chan inclined his head slightly. “We were prepared.”
Another elder spoke next. “The hunters responded quickly.”
“They always do.”
The conversation paused for a moment.
Then the elder who had spoken first glanced toward the nursery path. “And yet that was not the only thing we noticed last night.”
Chan followed his gaze.
Felix stood near the nursery clearing again, surrounded by the usual chaos of pups and laughter. Han sat nearby in the grass while Jeongin attempted to entertain two smaller wolves with a stick he had found somewhere along the patrol path.
Minho approached from the cooking fires with a basket in his hands. Changbin arrived from the workshop moments later, carrying something freshly carved. Hyunjin and Seungmin joined them soon after.
The same pattern. The same quiet gravity.
Felix in the middle.
The elder beside Chan hummed thoughtfully. “He speaks, and the pack listens.”
Chan did not answer immediately.
Another elder added, “Even the hunters.”
That was true.
Chan had felt it himself.
Felix had not raised his voice. He had not challenged anyone. He had simply spoken with calm certainty, and the entire clearing had settled.
Chan looked toward the inner circle again.
Felix was crouched now, helping one of the pups stand properly after it tripped over its own paws. Han laughed at something Jeongin said while Hyunjin checked the pup’s leg out of habit.
The others drifted naturally around Felix like pieces of a familiar shape.
The elder’s voice cut gently into Chan’s thoughts. “The pack already knows its heart.”
Chan exhaled slowly.
He had known the truth of that long before the elders said it out loud.
Felix still had no idea.
And that needed to change.
Chan stepped away from the elders.
The movement drew a few curious glances from nearby wolves, but no one spoke as he crossed the clearing.
The inner circle noticed him first.
Han sat up slightly. “Uh oh. That’s the serious walk.”
Minho looked mildly amused. Changbin crossed his arms.
Felix glanced up from the pup he had been helping. “Chan?”
Chan stopped in front of him.
For a moment he just looked.
Felix crouched in the grass. Pups scattered around his feet. The others in their usual loose circle around him.
Felix rose slowly when he realized Chan was not joking. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
Chan reached forward and brushed a stray bit of grass from Felix’s sleeve. Then he rested his hand briefly against Felix’s shoulder.
It was a simple gesture, but it carried weight.
Felix blinked in surprise.
Around them, the clearing had gone quiet. Hunters paused along the path. The elders watched from across the square.
Chan spoke clearly enough for everyone to hear.
“You kept the pack steady last night.”
Felix frowned slightly. “I didn’t do anything.”
“You did.”
Felix opened his mouth to argue, but Chan kept going.
“The pack listens to you.”
Felix glanced around the circle like maybe someone else would explain what was happening. Han just smiled. Minho looked perfectly calm. Hyunjin watched with soft understanding. Changbin nodded once. Even Jeongin looked proud.
Felix turned back to Chan. “I just didn’t want anyone fighting.”
“That’s exactly it.”
Chan’s hand stayed steady on Felix’s shoulder.
“You care about every wolf here,” he said quietly. “And the pack feels it.”
Felix looked overwhelmed now. “That doesn’t mean anything.”
Chan shook his head slightly. “It means more than you think.”
A quiet murmur moved through the clearing.
Chan could feel the attention of the larger pack settling on them, but he did not look away from Felix.
“When the danger came, the pack looked to me,” he said.
Felix’s expression softened with understanding.
“And when it passed, they looked to you.”
The realization spread slowly across Felix’s face.
Chan’s voice stayed calm.
“They needed both.”
Silence settled over the clearing.
For a long moment, no one spoke.
Then Han leaned back on his hands and grinned. “Finally.”
Minho nodded slightly. “About time.”
Hyunjin smiled softly. Changbin gave a quiet huff of agreement. Jeongin looked like he had been waiting for this moment all morning.
Felix stared at them all. “You already knew?”
Han shrugged. “Pretty obvious.”
Felix looked back at Chan. “You’re serious.”
Chan nodded once.
Felix glanced toward the elders. A few of them still watched carefully. Not all of their expressions were pleased.
Felix noticed that too. “Some of them don’t agree.”
“That’s their choice.”
Chan’s voice stayed steady. He looked around the inner circle briefly before returning his gaze to Felix.
“But the pack has already chosen.”
Felix went very still.
Then, slowly, almost shyly, he stepped closer.
The movement was small, but the inner circle shifted with it automatically. Han rose to his feet beside them. Hyunjin moved a little closer. Minho stepped forward from the edge of the circle. Changbin and Jeongin followed without hesitation. Seungmin joined them quietly from Hyunjin’s side.
Eight wolves.
One circle.
Felix looked around at them, then back at Chan.
The pups at his feet wagged their tails as if nothing important had happened at all.
Felix laughed softly under his breath. “You’re all ridiculous.”
Han grinned. “And yet here we are.”
Chan felt the quiet warmth of Felix’s scent settle through the clearing again, steady and certain.
And now everyone could see it.
